13 “Dad, why do you make us visit Miranda?” Ben clambered into the back of the four-wheel drive parked outside the bed and breakfast where they’d spent the night. “She doesn’t want to see us.” “Don’t ask Dad questions like that.” Lauren jumped into the driver’s seat. “You always defend him,” Ben said. “None of us like her.” “Ben, please don’t talk like that.” Paul looked over his shoulder into the back seat. “I know she’s hard to like, but as your grandmother she deserves respect.” Ben looked away, hiding his sullen face. He’d been cranky since he woke up and having to see his grandmother wasn’t improving his mood. Paul watched as Lauren carefully backed the car out of the parking space.
