Chapter 1
My name is Erised. My mom is a big fan of Harry potter that he named me after the mirror of Erised which shows the biggest desires of our hearts. I’m currently in my senior year, luckily the last batch of the Basic Education Curriculum in the country because we have now the K12. My parents died in a car accident two years ago. I was zipping my bag to call it a day. It’s senior year. Everyone is thinking of proms, cocktails, parties and dorms while me on the other side is choosing which university I should get into. “Eris, it’s the lower class dude.” Says Amber. “Bet the principal needs you in her office again” Amber is one of my friends. I mean, she calls me best friend but we never had that girly hang out like the other cliques here in our room. She’s a Science geek. If you’re thinking if she has thick glasses or something, no. She’s a very girly teenager who loves pink and dangling stuffs in her fashion. “Amber the dude has a name, Edvard.” I answered. There is this guy who happens to be like the principal’s secretary. Like he’s always been asked to excuse me in class. You might notice how Amber degraded him, calling him a lower class dude. There’s a wall between the talented and the genius. Lower classes excel in talents while higher classes excel in academics. “Whatever, should we wait for you? For carpooling?” she asked “Nah, Kuya Darth’s coming.” I picked my bag and my file case. “Hi miss Montreal. The principal wanted to see you.” He said. He was about to walk away after he said that. “Edvard” I said “you know you could always call me on my first name.” He just smiled and left standing in the room’s doorway. I knew that kid when we we’re in grade school. He was always picked by a red van. Now he’s grown, with brownish curls, impressive height. He was once in the basketball team but now he’s into arts and swim team. I headed straight to the school’s principal office. But then, my urinal habits is not with me at the moment. The nearest comfort room is in the school gymnasium. As usual, the basketball team are playing. Girls on bleachers squealing. The next thing I know, that ringing sound of a ball caught in front of me with a guy like 5’11 or something is standing snapping fingers in front of me. “Miss, are you okay?” he asked The moment I realized he just saved me from being hit by a ball. I’ve seen everyone’s face in this institute. It’s a small school that each of us know everybody. But this guy snapping his fingers in front of me is unfamiliar. “Sorry, you’re small to be noticed walking past by.” Wow, thank you for rudely complimenting my flat 5 height. “Yeah I’m okay. Thank you.” “Brick!” he yelled. Brick is the school’s MVP. He’s in a relationship with Amber. “Let’s let the lady pass first.” Then I just did what I need to do. Ignored who that guy is. It’s been three weeks since school started and I haven’t noticed or heard of that guy. Well, I was never a fan of basketball games or any of those games. Neither an athletic guy was my taste. I know I am a very nerdy but I did had a love life too and my brothers do not disapprove it since, I’m one geeky little sister. That espresso scent welcomed me in the office. Mrs. Lauren, the principal’s secretary pointed me to the door meaning I can enter the office. She’s having a cup of espresso and her favorite red velvet cakes. It’s supplied by my Math geek friend, Holley. Ms. Marin is still single at the age of 33. She’s young to be a principal but she’s very smart. My eldest brother is her classmate during high school years in the same university. They were friends though but they are both busy having no time for relaxation. “Good Afternoon miss Marin.” “Hi,” she signaled me to sit. “So I received the 4 new forms from universities we battled last year. Here, one is made especially for you.” She handed me an envelope. WOW. It’s from my dream school, William College of Arts. “Remember how you bagged gold from their short story writing? They were really impressed. I’ve prepared copies of your application letter.” “Miss Marin. I don’t know what to say.” I was too shocked to see the envelope from William College of arts. A school which specializes Arts. “Anyway. I will always be of help.” I was about to speak when I hear a loud bang of the front door. I saw Ms. Marin roll her eyes. Then from her doorway, I saw the same guy who just saved me from being hit by an orange ball with a towel in his head. He’s like drying his hair from sweats. He smelled good even though he just went playing. “Hey Aunt Marin. Done burning carbs.” He leans to kiss Miss Marin So he’s Miss Marin’s nephew. Oh I remember her siblings living in California may be this one is sent here by one of them. He noticed me and stopped drying his hair. Like wide eyed staring at me. “How many times do I have to tell you this is not your shower room.” Says Miss Marin “You’re the small girl earlier.” He held his hand. “Jaxel England” “Erised.” I responded Miss Marin was staring at us and cleared her throat. I pulled my hand but Jaxel was still standing staring at me. I ignored his presence. “Eris this is Jaxel my nephew. He just got here last week. And I forgot to tell you that he’s battling you for Academic team’s Captain.” Oh. So he’s an enemy. Aj, the MAPEH expert was supposed to be team captain but he needed to migrate in New York with his mom and dad leaving the rest of the academic team to battle for his position. I am already promoted as editor-in-chief. I can’t be two masters at the same time. “Miss Marin, I just received the news yesterday that I am promoted as the Editor-in-chief of the campus paper. So I’m giving up on being team captain.” I clarified. I still have a life though. Grabbing this opportunity will just lessen my time for reading. It doesn’t mean it’s an opportunity, we always need to grab it. I believe GOD gives us choices and we need to choose one. “Are you sure?” she asked. I saw her surprised by what I said. “Yes Miss Marin. Being the team captain is not my dream. You can ask Amber and Holley for it.” “No. They are not responsible members. Yes your best friends are smart but when it comes to responsibilities, I’d zipped. So since you’re Aj’s right hand back then, can you spread the word about a meeting tomorrow?” “Sure mam no problem.” “That’s all. You can now go.” She dismisses me. I left the office. I dropped by my locker to pick some books. I saw Edvard, resting his back in his locker surrounded by Toby-his bmx buddy, Delevigne-a cheer leader, Joemitchel-her name sounds like a boy but I heard she’s straight girl and Cher she’s also a dancer. These kids are not as rich as the ones in higher class. There is a big weird traditions in this institute and unfortunately my friends are one of those followers. As I pass by, I smiled at Edvard and he did the same. I just know him by his name but personally NO. It’s funny that we went to the same school from preschool to kindergarten, elementary years and now highschool yet we don’t speak. His friends hate me, especially Delevigne. Lower classes hate us. I opened my locker and ignored the gossips from their clique. “Hey EIC” calls Cerise. Cerise won the Supreme Student Council. She’s rumored to be in a relationship with Toby. It’s sort of impossible because she’s the student council president and girls like her don’t get involved with people like him, according to school traditions. “Hi Cerise.” Cerise is one good person. People just misinterpret her. “Borrowing notes?” I asked She’s not present during the afternoon period because of a meeting with the advisers for the Acquaintance party. “Yeah, that’s one thing. But there’s another favor I want to ask.” “Yeah?” “Can I borrow your office tomorrow? The SSC office is under maintenance and we have a meeting tomorrow.” “OH yeah I almost forgot thank you for reminding. Sure. I’ll be around, just don’t mess it up.” She thanked me with a peck on my cheek. Edvard’s clique near us is also leaving. I walked by the front gates to wait for my fourth brother Darth. It’s only Wednesday yet it felt like it’s been five days since the week started. I haven’t read my new book by Lauren Oliver. I keep on seeing dads and mothers picking their child. I was once in that position if it weren’t for that truck that hit my parents’ car. But that was two years ago. I was awoken in the middle of my reminiscing moment with a car honk. My brother must be probably busy with a lot of costumers in his photo studio. I told my brothers not to do this anymore but my Eldest Brother Fitzgerald, who happens to be a professor in New York insisted on doing this. My second brother Raven is a Civil Engineer and my third brother Lucian is a mechanical engineer and currently owning his car auto shop. No one among my brothers is married nor in a relationship. I’m hearing girl names from their mouths like my Brother Fitz who happens to be friends with Miss Marin. “Sorry.” Kuya Darth apologizes. Opens the car door for me. “So many costumers. I’m gonna drop you by at home and be back in the studio.” “Told you guys. I’m old enough to travel all by myself.” He shuts the door and hands me a bag of chips and a macchiato. “You’re still our sweet baby. You do all the house chores and in return we do this.”
