Second Chance : A Rare Opportunity

Chapter 3

Sophia

“Who is he, tell me who is that bastard” he asked in his cold deep voice. For a moment I myself froze on my place not able to move.

He was standing dangerously close to me. His one hand was resting on the wall beside my face and other hand was holding my wrist in a tight grip near his chest.

In front of his 6.3 height and hard masculine body, I was looking like a fragile doll. He was leaning down causing our faces to be almost at same level. His breath was fanning my lips and my traitor heart has already started pounding against my chest.

I tried to push him away but whom am I kidding. He is too strong for me but I didn’t stop my struggle.

Getting annoyed by my struggles, he held my wrist and pinned them against the wall on either side of my face and took one more step closer to me, leaving no space between us.

“I asked, who is that bastard, you had your appointment with?” he asked again. His Minty breath was trying to take control over my mind.

But I didn’t loose my sanity and asked in same cold tone, “First tell me who are you, huh?”

He looked at me in shock when I again asked him, “Do I know you? I don’t think so. And why are you asking me about my appointments? I don’t see any reason to share my personal life with my new boss”.

He left my hands and took a step back. His dark hair were covering the frown on his forehead. He put his hand into his pocket and I crossed my arms over my chest.

“So you are going to act like you don’t recognize me. But you know what, you should have done it since the moment your eyes fell on me.”

“Your hazel eyes and that beating heart of yours has already uncovered your bluff” he paused and took a step closer.

“And to tell you the truth you are not an good actor. See even now your breath hitched because of my closeness. You still get affected by me, don't you?” he said proudly.

I hate myself for getting affected by him. But I don’t want him to know about it and to hide my nervousness I chuckled and said,

“You must be quite delusional to think like this but it’s because I don’t like some stranger getting close to me, that is the reason why I am feeling nervous”.

“I was wondering how might you be living your life without me. But I guess you have already used your skills to catch someone’s heart. I wonder who is that poor soul. Seems like he is not as rich as me” he mocked.

He thinks that I am some gold digger? No, I know why he is saying these things. He knows I don’t like it when someone calls me by these cheap names. He is trying to provoke me.

He just wants me to get angry and tell him about my appointment. It’s a really cheap trick Mr. Knight, I thought in my mind.

“Whoever it is, it’s none of your business. So now if you excuse me, I would like to take my leave” I said. I am not giving you what you want. I started walking in the direction of the door.

He held my hand, “Sophia….” He was about to say something when the door of the room opened and Claire entered into the room.

I instantly pulled my hand out of his grip. Claire came to me and said, “Boss wants to see you”. Her eyes made way towards Daniel. She was confused to see him in my cabin.

“Why are you here, Mr. Knight? Were you finding your way to somewhere?” she asked hesitantly. He was about to reply when I cut him off, “He wanted to see some files”.

“On his first day?” Claire asked getting more confused. “That’s what I was saying to him. It’s your first day here Mr. Knight, Boss won’t like you to be working on your first day” I said smiling at him.

Looking at my attempts an evil smirk appeared on his lips. Oh how badly I want to kill this person.

He said, “Okay, let’s go. After all we have lots of time in our hands to catch up right?” I shot dagger in his direction.

He paused and then completed, “I mean catch up on work”.

I don’t know how long I can stop myself from punching the hell out of him.

The remaining day went by quickly. After our interaction in my cabin we didn’t came face to face again, and I was very thankful for that.

I came back to my home. Kevin came running to me. He was looking so happy. I picked him up from the ground and asked, “How is my bunny, he is looking very happy today”.

He smiled and said, “Yes Mommy, I am very happy. I made a new friend in the school today. We became best friends”.

“Really? Who is he?” I asked him curiously slowly forgetting about my bad day in the office.

“His name is Ken, he is in my class. We shared our tiffin today, we played together, we enjoyed very much” he said excitedly in his baby voice.

I am happy that he is happy here. I thought he will feel alone and it will take time for him to adjust in this new environment and new school but I am happy that he is not complaining about anything.

After eating the food I made, I read him the bed time story until he fell asleep.

My mind clouded with the memories of my past and the things that happened today. I never thought I will meet him again like this.

Yes sometimes I used to think how we will meet again, will he apologize for what he did or would ask for a second chance.

But how can I forgot that he is Daniel Knight. The person who is so full of himself, the person who will never apologize to anyone. He is a kind of person who can never lower himself in front of anyone.

That’s what he proved today.

I wonder how this person was able to fool me in the past.

Flashback

I was sitting in the canteen of my college. The place was filled with students and I had chosen the table in the corner so that no one can notice me.

I don’t like unnecessary attention coming my way but since the incidence with the group of bullies last week, I feel like I am a center of everyone’s attention.

Suddenly the place became silent and I knew the reason behind it. I just wished that they will not come to me, but man I was wrong.

They all sat down on the chairs around the table I was sitting on. I didn’t look up and kept eating my sandwich. A hand grabbed the cold drink placed on my table and I looked up.

He is the same blonde guy, I found out his name is Steve and the other boy with brown eyes is Mark. One girl is Brittany and the girl who commented on my clothes is Becky.

But there are only four of them here. Their leader is not here. I put the last bite of sandwich in my mouth and got up from the chair to leave the place.

I took a step and Mark kicked a chair causing it to fall in front of me. I almost stumbled. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath,

'Control Sophia, you don’t want to get into any trouble', I told myself.

I stepped aside and again started walking to get out of here when Steve touched me on my butt, and it was something they shouldn’t have done.

In an instant I picked up the empty chair from the table beside me and turned around in the speed of light, smashing the chair on his face.

The hooting and screaming died down when the sound of chair cracking echoed in the room. He fell down on the floor with a thud.

I looked in the direction of his friends. Mark strode in my direction and I just kicked him on his balls. He fell on his knees in the pain.

Everyone was looking at me with a scared expressions. I walked towards Steve and crouched down in front of him. His head was bleeding but do I care, no I don’t.

I fisted his hair in my left hand and said, “Don’t ever touch me again with those filthy hands of yours. It was just a chair that I smashed on your head. Next time I’ll break your scull with baseball bat, and there won’t be any mercy”.

Saying this I pushed him away. I looked in the direction of the girls and they were beyond scared. I already warned them to not mess with me, but they didn't listen.

When I reached towards the door, I came across with those green eyes. Daniel was standing in front of me. I glared at him and stepped aside to leave the place when he held me by my wrist.

I turned around to give him a piece of my mind but his words made my eyes to be widened due to shock.

“I am sorry for what my friends did to you” he said. Everyone in the room gasped upon hearing those words from his mouth.

“It’s okay” I said and left. I could not believe my ears. I heard that he never apologizes not even to teacher’s.

I thought he is going to do something bad to me like his friends but when he apologized I thought at least he knows that his friends are wrong here.

But that was the first time I was made fool by his great acting. I regret trusting his words on that day.

I came out of the elevator and made my way into my cabin. I wish I will not get to see him much today and he will not torture me with his presence like he did yesterday.

Claire knocked on the door of my cabin and pocked her head inside with a smile on her lips. I asked her to come inside.

“Mr. Knight wants to see you in his cabin” she said and the papers I was holding in my hand fell on the table. How bad my luck can be.

I came out of shock when Claire asked me, “Are you okay, Sophia? I know he gives off killer vibes but don’t worry he is not going to eat you alive”.

I nodded my head with a fake smile and got up from the chair. I followed Claire and entered into his room.

I saw Jordan was already standing there. I went near his desk and returned my own smile to Jordan who smiled at me mouthing good morning.

I greeted Daniel slowly, “Good morning, Mr. Knight”. He was busy reading something in the file in his hands.

He looked up when my voice fell on his ears. He nodded his head and started, “I have called you guys here because I have a task to assign to both of you”.

I was confused and Jordan was too. He continued, “Mr. Parker you are manager of the accounts department and Miss Williams you are of Finance department”.

“I want all the reports for past three years on my table in two days. I know it’s a little extra work I am giving to you guys but I want to understand everything to it’s depth before starting my work” he said in completely professional tone.

When he isn’t being all cocky and full of himself, and actually focuses on his work he looks really attractive and mature. He is an intelligent person, that I know for sure.

We both nodded our head in yes. He said, “You guys can go now”. We were about to turn around when he spoke, “Miss Williams you are new here, that is the reason why I told you to work with Mr. Parker. If you want any help you can ask him or Miss Claire here, okay?”

“Okay, thank you” I said and came out. He is not the person who was troubling me yesterday. God just let him be like this and I will be happy to work here for two years.

We came out. As Daniel told us we started doing our work. The time went by very quickly and lunch time came.

I quickly got up from my place after putting all the papers aside. I can’t wait to meet my baby. I picked my bag and came out of my cabin.

Claire was coming towards my cabin. I asked, “Do you need anything?”

“Mr. Knight wants all of us to gather in canteen. He is going to treat us to a meal today” she said.

“Sorry I have an appointment Claire. I have to go” I said. “, But he wants everyone to be here. Can’t you cancel it?” she asked hopefully.

“I can’t Claire, please tell him I already left” I requested. She said, “Okay, but you will have to tell me who is this special someone”. I chuckled at her and nodded my head.

I came back after having lunch with Kevin and Layla. I entered into my cabin and my eyes fell on angry Daniel sitting on the chair in my cabin.

He asked, “Where were you Miss Williams? Was it again that special appointment of yours?”

And I thought, ‘Not again please’.
