-Anya's POV-
A couple of hours later, my alarm went off, startling me and bringing me back to reality. I closed my book with a sigh, wishing I could have kept reading instead of having to go to work. I grabbed my work uniform and went into the bathroom. After quickly disposing of my clothes, I changed into my work uniform, curled my hair, and applied some light makeup. An alarm on my phone went off again, reminding me that I needed to leave now to get to work on time.
I turned all the lights off, grabbed my necessities, and locked my front door. As I made my way down the street, I noticed how beautiful of a day it was. The sun cast beautiful, warm rays onto the grass, and from the looks of it, it had rained last night. There was still a little bit of morning dew on the leaves, and I instantly felt warm inside. Maybe today would be a good day; I just hoped
that man didn’t show up again.
When I walked up to the bar, no one was waiting outside, and I let out a sigh of relief. I unlocked the front door and quickly locked it again, not wanting any unwanted visitors. Missy and I were working doubles today as bartenders, which made me feel a little bit better. Missy and I aren’t that close, but she’s been more of a friend to me than anyone else. I’ve never really gotten along well with other women because relationships scare me. I never know who will be taken away from me or simply use me to their benefit.
“Hey, Lace!” Missy’s inviting voice echoed through the bar, and I looked up at her with a genuine smile.
“Hey, Missy! It looks like today is going to be a good day, don’t you think?” She smiled and nodded her head at me.
We quickly began to set up for the day, making sure the liquor was stocked, helping the waitresses roll silverware, and any other miscellaneous items were checked off our list. Once we were done, Alex went over and unlocked the front door since we were now open. Thankfully, only a few people showed up in the first half-hour. I didn’t expect a lot of people since it was still the early afternoon. Our usual rush wouldn’t start until around shift change at 5 pm.
I couldn’t stop myself from constantly checking the front door to see if that mystery man from my past would make another appearance. However, after a few hours and still no sign of him, I started to relax. Once Missy and I had fulfilled all the drink and food orders, we had some time to talk, which usually never happens.
“Are you okay, Anya? You keep checking the front door like you’re waiting for someone.” Missy asked, her brows furrowed with confusion.
I let out a sigh. “I’m alright. One of the patrons from the other night just gave me a weird vibe. He kept trying to get information about me and seemed pretty pushy.” I didn’t want to tell her about him breaking in, but hopefully, if he did show back up, she would take his order, so I didn’t have to.
She came over and hugged me. “I’m sorry, girl. If he becomes a problem, then we will talk to Alex about it. Kay?” I nodded my head and returned the gesture.
Our talk was short-lived because the shift change rush was going to be coming soon. We made sure that everything was stocked and ready to go and waited eagerly for customers. Right before the rush hit, Alex peeked his head out of his office and called for me. Missy had a confused look on her face but quickly regained her composure, and I walked to his office, letting her know I would be right back.
Alex was sitting in his office chair looking at his computer, and I decided to close the door, assuming he wanted to speak privately. The minute the door clicked in place; he moved so fast that all I saw was a blur as he pushed me up against the door frame. A gasp escaped my lips, and his hand quickly covered my mouth, not wanting anyone to hear me. My eyes were wide, and before I had the opportunity to say anything, he picked me up by the back of my thighs, securing them around his waist and pressing into my body with his own.
“Alex, what are you-” He silenced me with his lips, placing tender kisses all over my lips, cheeks, jaw, and neck.
I was in shock, but part of me was enjoying the feeling of being so close to Alex. I secured my legs around his waist and his hands tangled in my hair while he continued to plant kisses all over my neck. I felt his tongue glide across my neck, and I froze, instantly becoming uncomfortable and being reminded of memories in my past.
“Alex, stop, please,” I begged, but he paid no mind to my pleas. “Alex!” I shouted at him, pushing against his chest, and he stumbled backward, shocked by my outburst, and I felt my ass collide with the floor.
“I’m so sorry, Anya! I just couldn’t help myself.” Alex’s hand appeared in front of my face to help me up, and I smacked it away.
I stood up from the floor, brushed off my clothes, and walked back out to the bar without another word. I ignored Alex the rest of the shift, and thankfully, no unwanted visitors showed up either. The rest of the night was hectic, and I stayed focused on my work; whenever Alex wanted to speak with me, I ignored him or told him I was too busy. I didn’t even take a break because I was afraid of him coming to find me and wanting to talk things out.
Finally, the last patron left the bar, and Missy and I quickly cleaned things up so we could go home. Alex cashed out our tips, and I left without another word. I started my walk home, realizing that a few streetlights were still out, so I used the flashlight on my phone and tried to make it home as fast as possible.
I only had about three blocks left and was passing under the last streetlight that wasn’t working. As I stepped into the street to cross over to the next sidewalk, I felt a pair of hands grab my waist and pull me into an alleyway. I tried to scream, terrified of who had a hold on me as my back was slammed into a wall of bricks, but my mouth was covered with someone’s hand, muffling my screams.
The other hand quickly found my throat and began to squeeze, taking away the oxygen I desperately needed to survive.
Tears began to fill my eyes, and it was so dark that I couldn’t see anything. “You think you can just run away from me without saying a word, Anya?!” Alex’s voice assaulted my ears, and I froze, completely in shock.
As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I could vaguely make out Alex’s figure and couldn’t believe what was happening. “You will be mine, Anya. I’ve wanted you the moment you stepped into my bar, and I’m going to get a taste of you.” His voice was deep, menacing, and threatening.
His right hand was still firmly clamped over my mouth, keeping any scream or cry for help silenced from anyone who could hear me. His left hand freed my throat, and I felt the air come crashing back into my lungs. I felt his hand run down the front of my body, firmly grasping one of my breasts, showing his dominance over me. I couldn’t help it as the memories flashed into my mind like a tsunami, flooding my senses and immobilizing me.
In an instant, I heard the tearing of fabric as he ripped my uniform off my body, exposing me to the chilly air. I felt a shiver go down my spine and felt the tears pooling in my eyes, threatening to spill over at any moment. His mouth started exploring my breast while his hand went between my thighs, and I knew I needed to act quickly. No one was going to save me; I needed to protect myself. I pushed all my fear into the back of my mind and relaxed against the brick wall, hoping he would take his hand off my mouth.
Thankfully he took my relaxed posture as an invitation and uncovered my mouth; at the same time, I slowly moved my keys so they would sit in-between my fingers.
The minute he relaxed and looked down into my eyes, I lunged my fist forward, plunging my keys into his neck, and screamed for help. He stumbled backward, blood running down his neck, and I took the opportunity to run as fast as I could. I held my ripped shirt over my body, running into the section of the street that was brightly lit, and continued to scream for help till I reached my apartment door. I didn’t bother looking behind me and quickly locked my door and fell to the ground as tears escaped my eyes.
After what seemed like half an hour, I decided to pick myself up and take a hot shower to get the nauseating feeling of his touch off my body. I paid no mind to anything in my apartment as I ran to the shower, ripping off the rest of my clothing and turned the water as hot as I could bear it. I sat on the floor of my shower, crying until there was nothing left. I figured it was time for me to get out and just go to bed, so I turned the water off and grabbed my towel. I dried off and threw on some shorts and a tank top, walked into my room, not bothering to turn the light on, and used the remainder of my energy to crawl into bed.
I closed my eyes, hoping that I wouldn’t be cursed with nightmares, and tried to let sleep overtake me. As I felt myself drifting off, I felt someone pounce on top of me, pinning me to my bed and securing my arms above my head. My eyes sprang open, and to my horror, the man from the bar’s face came into view. He leaned towards me, looking into my eyes when I saw his eyes narrow.
“I see you’ve spent some more time with your boss. I thought I made myself clear the last time I was here.” His words cut through the air, causing me to tremble underneath him. “This time, we won’t be interrupted.” His nasty smirk sent chills down my spine.
I started to thrash and shake underneath him, hoping his hold on me would weaken so I could run away. He began to laugh menacingly. “You’ve always had spunk; I’ll give you that.” I looked up at him in horror, realizing he could easily overpower me, and I stood no chance against him.
He used one hand to keep both my arms pinned down and pulled a rag from his pocket, and the moment he placed it over my nose and mouth, an overwhelming smell of chemicals invaded my senses. I could feel myself losing consciousness, and the last thing I saw was his face in the crowd, holding up the betting card at the auction I was purchased from all those years ago.
