The Hardship of Life 101
Life is so hard. At the age of 5 years old, Jane had already started to work on the farm, helping her parents with planting corn in the field and harvesting plants on the farm. Since Jane was the eldest among the siblings, she had already learned to do household chores, like cooking, cleaning, washing dishes, washing clothes and taking care of her younger siblings. One time, when Jane's parents weren't home yet from the market, riding a horse, Jane found out that the rice left was just 1 scoop. At a young age, Jane decided to cook it and make porridge from it. The worst part is that Jane climbed into a coconut tree to get a coconut fruit to feed her siblings. It's so scary but she decided to do it since her parents are not home yet. There were times that she also went to other people's farms to clean them using her bare hands just in exchange for the rice. Jane thought that that would be a very big help for the family. Until such time that Jane already started going to school. From there, she experienced bullies because of her tribe. She experienced a lot of bad comments from other kids but still, she pursued and got into the top rank in school. Jane is still helping her parents. She sells candy in school or anything that would make her help her family. Every school year she is in the top rank . Jane lives in the middle of the Jungle. So many trees, coconuts, rubber trees around. There were only 3 houses there. It is so far from the city. Life is simple there but her parents really pushed Jane to study. You have to study. Don't follow our steps! You need to be successful someday! Her parents were always reminding her of those lines, and those lines were always stacked in her mind. So she studied even though life is so hard. Without money and walking so far to school is not a hindrance for her to follow her dreams. HAPPY BIRTH DAY TO YOU.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. BIRTHDAY Parties , birthday cakes were just in Jane's dreams. Jane did not experience having a birthday celebration or parties like the other kids had. Her birthday is just a normal day. But the most special is the "HARANA" like at dawn, some group from the church will sing a birthday song outside the house. IT'S LIKE ANGELS ARE SINGING!! It feels so good to hear those voices. Those were memorable. That's the only birthday memory she had during her young age. AT SCHOOL.... Kids now have lots of money for going to school, but Jane only has one Philippine peso every day and sometimes none. She had this during her elementary days. Jane Graduated at Elementary with Honors. High school life is so exciting! she said. I can meet new teachers, new students and new friends. She exclaimed. But Jane did not realize that bullies were still there. Even some of the teachers look down on her tribe. She cannot Fight! She cannot talk! She has no power to fight for it. She was crying inside. Those bullies made her self-confidence down. One day, when her teacher was lecturing, Jane was so silent. Until such time that the teacher said "those people in Native tribe, cannot eat delicious food. Even during the Christmas season. They only beg so that they can eat." that line was in Janes's memory until now. My family is not begging. My father and mother work hard just to feed us!!! Jane silently cried because she felt ashamed and felt pity for what the teacher said. Someday I can go back to you and show you that you mistakenly judged our tribe!!! Jane is so anxious but she cannot open her mouth to talk back to the teacher. She just silently talks to herself about pursuing her studies and going to college. Many years passed by, Jane graduated from high school and, luckily, had a scholarship from the foundation where she applied. I will not study near to my hometown!!! Jane talked to her mother. I will not allow anyone to bully me again!! she added. She decided to study in a city far from her hometown. Her parents agreed. She thought that people would mock her because of her tribe, but she was mistaken. Her confidence came back. Jane was alone in the Big City and started her college journey. COLLEGE JOURNEY: Enrollment time. There were thousands of students in the area. The enrollment stage is very hard. There were so many line-ups, you cannot eat because of the line, and you can go home late at night. Hmmmm.... it's tiresome and you didn't know anybody or anything about the place. Fight, fight, fight. Jane promised to fight for her dream. Until she finished the enrollment stage. First day of school. First, teachers have new faces, new teachers, and everything is new. WOahhhh... Big buildings are there, so many people and vehicles around. This is so far from my place. Jane amazingly said to herself. Jane was so amazed by the intelligence of the students in the city. They dressed and speak so well. She then started to study life in the city. She started talking to her classmates and started making friends. The first month of the school year is not so easy. YES! It is not easy. Jane missed her family so much and she was just looking in the window of her school, imagining what her family was doing. Can they eat? Are my siblings OK? Are my parents fine? Jane asked herself sadly. She made it an inspiration to pursue her dreams. Time flew, Jane already had friends, and she had already started to familiarize the place. School went well. Until One day... There's no money left for Jane. No food is very hard. She cannot eat when going to school. She studies her lessons without food in her stomach. She cannot focus. The hunger always strikes her. She's just imagining food on her plate and after that she drinks water to make you feel full. A glass of water is enough. Ring ring ring... Jane's very old phone that she borrowed from her aunt rang. It's her family calling. Hello!!! Jane, this is your mother. How are you? I am so well. Don't worry about me. I miss all of you there. Jane didn't tell her family about what was going on. Do you still have money? her mother asked. Yes I still have. Jane lied again because she didn't want her family to be worried and rushed to look for money for her. OK, just tell us when you need it. Take care always and remember , do not entertain boys for now. Focus on your studies. Her parents are always reminding her of that. Yes, I will remember that. Jane answered. okay bye. Take care. God bless. That's the end of the call from her family. HUNGER! HUNGER! HUNGER.... Jane's stomach was painful. NOBODY's around to help. Who's around? Only the cat is around.. No family's around . How can I survive? Jane asked herself. Time passed by, another day came. Jane still went to school without eating anything. Can i pass this trial? Can I finish this test? Bravely, Jane stood up , fixed herself and told herself not to give up. This is just the start of her journey in the Big City. She was walking from school to her rented room and almost fainted in the middle of the road. The hot season + no food + no money = a dead end . While walking, she just prayed to reach her rented room . Praying that she will be okay on her way home. Praying that someone can help him. Until one day, her prayer was answered. She met this handsome guy, a generous and a kind one. Jane met a friend and became her best friend. The guy named Mr. JR is like the angel given from above. He always checked on Jane's situation. He also gives her food when she doesn't have anything. He took care of her as well as her needs without anything in return. He helped with Jane's school projects like Big Brother. Jane was so happy. Moving on, Jane transferred to a new location since the school had two locations. Life is still not okay but better than before. Jane had a new set of friends, but Mr. JR still keeps on contacting her. They supported each other like siblings.
