The Rejection
The moon was full the night Aria Evergreen turned eighteen. It bathed the Crescent Moon Pack grounds in silver light, soft and cool against the warm thrum of excitement that pulsed through the gathering wolves. Bonfires crackled, laughter danced on the wind, and everyone—everyone—waited to see who would find their fated mate tonight. Everyone but Aria. She stood alone in the shadows near the edge of the clearing, arms wrapped tightly around herself as if she could shield her fragile heart from what was coming. Her worn dress clung to her too-thin frame, and her dark hair spilled like ink over her shoulders. Omegas didn’t get new gowns or pretty flowers for the ceremony. They were lucky just to be invited. But tonight wasn’t about gowns. Tonight, everything would change. Her wolf stirred beneath her skin, restless and hopeful. It had started days ago—whispers in her mind, strange dreams of a black wolf with golden eyes. She’d woken breathless, heart pounding, filled with a longing she couldn’t explain. Could it be…? Her chest squeezed. No. She couldn’t let herself hope. Not when— A hush fell over the crowd. He was here. Alpha Kael Nightshade. Even his name carried weight. Power. He was the youngest Alpha in a century to take a pack—strong, commanding, deadly. The air seemed to bend around him as he stepped into the clearing, his tall frame wrapped in a black shirt that hugged every chiseled line of muscle. His midnight hair fell in sharp waves over his brow, and his golden eyes—those eyes—burned like twin suns. Every she-wolf in the crowd sighed. Aria froze. Her wolf howled. Mate. It was a scream inside her chest, primal and certain. Her knees buckled, and for a moment, the world tilted. Her heart soared and shattered all at once. Kael’s head snapped toward her. His nostrils flared. He felt it too. Time slowed. He took a step forward. Their eyes met. And in that moment, under the watchful gaze of the Moon Goddess, the bond snapped into place like a chain forged in stars. Aria gasped. She could feel his soul calling to hers—raw, real, undeniable. Then— Kael’s jaw clenched. His lips curled in something too cruel to be a smile. He turned to face the crowd. “I reject you.” The words sliced through the air like a blade. Gasps echoed around the clearing. Aria stared, her heart stumbling. “W-What?” Kael’s voice was hard. Final. “I, Alpha Kael Nightshade of Crescent Moon, reject you, Aria Evergreen, as my mate.” Laughter rippled behind her. She barely heard it. Blood roared in her ears. Her wolf whimpered, then shrieked in agony. A bond made by the Moon herself, broken. Aria fell to her knees. Kael looked at her—just once, just long enough for her to see something flicker behind his golden eyes. Regret? Pain? No. That couldn’t be. He turned his back without another word. The crowd moved on. But Aria couldn’t move at all. She felt like she was dying. And maybe she was. Because something inside her was tearing open—not just her wolf, but something deeper, older. A power long buried began to stir beneath her skin, cold and searing all at once. The moon overhead flared unnaturally bright, and the earth trembled softly beneath her hands. The last thing she heard before she blacked out was a whisper carried on the wind: “You are more than they know, child. You are mine.”
