Chapter One
Ruth Brown swiped the perspiration beads off her upper lip as her sister's vacant coffin dropped into the ground with a dull thud. What had their parents been thinking when they decided to bury an empty casket? She stared into the cavernous hole and tried to swallow over the lump in her throat. Jane would have loved the floral arrangements that surrounded them, but the sweet aroma only sickened Ruth.
