Chapter Seven

Aria POV The black dress fitted like a second skin. The maid had tried one last time to talk me out of it, they held up a gold gown that would have come off as something celestial but I just simply looked at them until they put it away. Those dresses were for someone who belonged here. I was still deciding if I did. The Ball had transformed the great half into something breathtaking yet suffocating all at once. There were garlands of white flowers hung from the rafters and candles and long tables. And then there was me Elias found me at the entrance, his amber eyes sweeping over my dress with a flicker in his eyes that seemed like irritation coated with admiration before he smoothed it into a small smile. “You look….” He searched for the word. " Myself,’ I offered. He laughed awkwardly before offered his arm. I took it. The pack parted as we walked in and I felt their eyes on me like small weights pressing into my skin. The council elders were seated along the far wall, their cups raised but there eyes on me like they had to watch my every move. Lila stood at the end of the room in a gown decorated with emerald stones, every inch of her was arranged perfectly like the Luna she most likely craved to be. She caught my eye and raised her cup in a toast that felt like a threat more than a salute. I turned away from her first. “You belong here," Elias said quietly beside me, his hand covering mine on his arm. “I need you to feel that tonight." Belong. It did seem like I belonged, but that was the part I didn't understand, how I suddenly belonged after being cased out like nothing. Did Elias come to his senses of how much I love him and wouldn't do anything to hurt him? If he did, then why be betrothed to somebody else? I was still his mate but I never felt chosen until now. I pressed my lips into a small smile and said nothing They hailed me and expressed gratitude for my safe return, it was hard to believe these were the same people who opted out for me to be sold. And when it was all done, I stood beside Elias, trying very hard to breathe or say a word. I slipped away during the third song, when Elias was pulled into conversation with two other council members that kept on glancing at me after every three seconds. I took a glass of wine and went over to the east side of the ball which seemed quieter. Standing before one of the tables that were high enough to my chest. I sipped from the glass, the wine rolled off my tongue before I swallowed. Everyone looked happy while I couldn't help but drum my fingers on the table. My eyes scanned the room till they rested on Elias again, I fixated on the way he laughed across the room and the way the Luna from before tried her best to laugh at his every word. It was strange, staring at him, having him touch me and be close to me and there was no mate bond nor… I clutched the glass as I felt a presence tower over me. “The people here think black should be a very absurd colour" I brought the glass to my lips, trying to ignore whosoever it was until she came forward with a smug smile, holding up a glass as well. "Maybe they should try being an ex Luna.” I said back. " You're right, they should… unfortunately it'll be just you" the woman smiled awkwardly but that was when I really looked at her. Extremely long black hair and these piercing green eyes, most importantly was the aura basked around her. “You're a witch," I said abruptly. She smiled again. "You don't seem so surprised” My eyes found Elias. “I should be, but I've had enough surprises for a night” "Where one of them could be that you're the reason why we are all here” Turning away from me to face the direction of the crowd, that was when I noticed that the new faces weren't actually new elite wolves from other packs, they were witches. Same creatures that had been in disagreement with the wolves since centuries. Why would Elias invite over witches? “And that might just be the first direct lie someone has said to me today” " You think?” I set my glass down "I think Alpha Elias is being the Alpha everyone needs…" “By trying to form alliances with the witches?" She asked innocently "I highly doubt it Aria" My brow arched. “I never told you my name" “Everyone knows the name of the reason of the ball" Of course everyone knew, what I didn't know was if she was allowed to address me by my name. "You don't think you're the same person you were, do you?” My head snapped towards her. " As a matter of fact, I do” She chuckled “even after what happened at the Blackstone pack” My eyes narrowed and I caught her smirking. "You know nothing.” I said "I know enough, enough to tell you you're now tied to a much darker fate Aria” My brows arched. "That's right, the oblivious look on your face shows, you don't even know it, what power you now hold…" My mind briefly drifted off to when I had broken the chains in half, the recent energy that surged through my veins each time I needed it to. "Please excuse me, I need some air” I tried to leave before she interrupted. "You think he let you go?" Her voice was curt My jaw ticked. “You think he let you run through those bushes on your own without knowing what he was doing….?" “Can you please shut up!?" I snapped. “my lady?" another voice from my right said, I turned to the figure to find one of the elders from the council. "Who are you perhaps talking to?” I turned back again to find no one beside me. Where did the witch go?
