Chapter 6

Rose pov

I was so scared my dad wasn’t going to make it. The last thing I needed to worry about was the ranch right now. As much as I hated to admit it, I knew Lee could handle things there just fine without me.

I wasn’t so sure I could say the same for my dad. He looked so pale as they wheeled him into the operating room. There was a chance he wouldn’t even make it through open heart surgery, but they said without it he wouldn’t make it at all. He said it was a chance worth taking. I felt like he was keeping something from me, but I didn’t know what.

I sat here in the waiting room wondering what I would do if I lost my dad. I didn’t want to have to find out. Nothing would be the same without him. I looked up to see a cup of coffee being handed to me. It was Lee’s dad.

“Hey little girl how’s the old man doing?”

“They just took him into surgery, so it will be awhile before we know anything. I’m glad you’re here.”

“Lee called me frantic saying you were here all alone.”

“That was very sweet of him. Thank you for being here with me.”

“My son is very fond of you darling, and no need to thank me. Your dad is like family there is no place I would be then right here.”

I just smiled at him. My brain was trying to process what he had said about Lee, but it was just too foggy to even think. There was a big part of me that wished Lee was here to tell me everything would be ok.

I miss my old friend. Maybe I should stop being so hard on him and try to get back that friendship we once had. It would be nice having help around the ranch. Especially now with my dad’s health the way it was.

Like always my dad knew just what I needed even if I didn’t. Now I just wanted him to get better, so I could tell him he was right, and I was wrong. I can’t just see him now. He will love telling me I told you so. This was one time I actually couldn’t wait to hear him say that. I still needed him in my life. I wasn’t ready to let him go just yet. He was one of the strongest men I knew he could survive this. He just had to. I needed him.
