CHAPTER 2 Austin's face turned red with anger, but he didn't say a word. He glared at Jane, his eyes piercing through her as she walked out of his office. She held his gaze, her heart racing, but she didn't back down. She knew she had spoken out of line, but she couldn't help it. She was tired of being treated like a doormat. As she closed the door behind her, Austin turned to his desk and sat down, still fuming. Jane, on the other hand, took a deep breath and tried to calm down. She knew she had to apologize, but she wasn't ready yet. She walked back to her desk and tried to focus on her work, but her mind was racing. She couldn't believe she had spoken to Austin like that. She knew she had crossed a line but she couldn't help it. He pushed her to it. After a few moments, Austin got up and walked out of his office. It was almost 1 o'clock, so he headed to pompadour to have his lunch. The restaurant was bustling with activity, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods filling the air. Austin had no idea how she had known that the pompadour was his favorite restaurant. Nor did he know how she was able to book his lunch reservation there. He had no clue on how she knew how he likes his coffee. They don't really know each other. “I guess this is part of the perfect secretary magics " he whispered as he scoffed softly. He was currently sitting at one of the tables at Pompadour waiting for his lunch. A part of him is still fuming over his argument earlier with Jane. “Where does she get the nerve to speak to him like that?" “Did you hear what happened between Jane Seyfried and Mr. Carter today?" He suddenly heard an elderly woman at the table behind him say. “What happened Sophia?" the other lady asked. Words spread fast. Austin thought to himself. “I heard they had a big argument today" Sophia said shaking her head. “O dear What could cause the argument, she seems to be a gentle girl" The other lady said. “Nobody knows, but it doesn't seem like she wants to work with the new CEO," Sophia said. “But how did she get to work there in the first place?" The other lady asked. Curiosity got the best of Austin as he leaned back to listen to what they were saying. “Ah my friend, that is an interesting story." Sophia giggled. “It was around 2 years ago when young Jane Seyfried entered into the Carter building. I was still working as a cleaner at Carter Industries. I was in the lobby when she walked in. She looked hopeless as she walked up to the receptionist, who was eyeing her simple dress and worn-out shoes, but she had a determination in her eyes. She showed her the way to Mr Carter Office. Before she reached the elevator, Mr Carter came out of the elevator. She greeted him as he stretched his hand to welcome her. Mr. Carter asked her if she was ready for the interview and she replied yes. I was even surprised because I thought she would follow him to his office but he said they are going to be having the interview there. He asked her about herself but the poor girl launched into a nervous speech about her skills but he cut her off with a thank you then they moved to the next part which is the typing test. Her hand trembled as she stumbled over the keys typing out rubbish but Carter did say anything rather than nodding, but was cut off by call and Jane was left all by herself. But then, something unexpected happened. Carter handed her the phone, and told her to take the call for her. I could tell that her heart was racing as she took the phone. She stumbled over her words, but she managed to take the message when she hung up. Mr Carter smiled at her. You might not have been the best typist, but you've got spirit. And that's what this company needs were Mr Carter words to her after she hung up the call and he said he'd pay her double her normal salary." Sophia said. “Wow! Such an interesting story. So that is when the perfect secretary was born." The other lady said, sipping her tea. “Oh no, it took months before that happened. She was clumsy at first and her dresses didn't match before she was able to adjust." Sophia said. Austin thought to himself, “Strange, so she isn't that good and was just lucky." But as he listened to Sophia, he realized that Jane's journey to becoming the perfect secretary wasn't an instant success. She had to work hard to adjust and prove herself. He was impressed but he doesn't like her attitude. It was five minutes to three when Jane entered the office of Late Mr. Carter attorney. The grizzled old man looked up from his desk and said “A little too early, as always, Ms. Seyfried " with a chuckle that ended with a cough. “It's already a habit , Mr. Henry." She said, smiling as she walked over to the man. “Do you need help with that?" She asked , referring to the large folders on the desk. “No no no my dear. What kind of gentleman would I be to have you carry that." He said, giving her a kind smile. Together they talked and walked to the larger conference room where the will will be read. It was when they entered that someone cleared his throat. “Ah, Mr Carter, good to see you again son." Mr Henry said as he dropped the folders on the conference desk. “My Condolences." He continued as he shook his hand. “Good to see you too, Mr Henry." He said, flashing a rare smile. “Ms. Seyfried." He said, nodding at Jane, his expression turning serious. “Mr. Carter." She replied, nodding back without daring to look at him. It was two hours later when the reading of the will was nearly finished. The mention of Jane's name came as a surprise to her. She wouldn't have come if Mr Henry had not asked her personally. Mr. Henry continued, ”And lastly, to my dearest secretary and friend Jane Seyfried. To Jane I leave my mansion in the city. I leave her all the money in the bank account in her name." At this she was confused. Why would Charles Carter leave her all this inheritance ? She didn't even know he had opened a bank account in her name. Mr Henry added, “And other than that, I leave her my BMW, a car that is one of her favorites but she has refused to collect from me." With that Mr Henry finished the reading of the will. Jane was stunned, unable to process the news. She was confused, she was not sure why he would give her all that? She felt tears stinging her eyes as she tried to blink them away. She raised her hand up to her eyes and wiped the tears. “Ms. Seyfried, are you alright my dear?" Mr. Henry asked with concern on his face. “I.. I'm fine." She noticed everybody looking at her. “I'm alright." She said composing herself and sitting straight. As Jane left the attorney's office, she couldn't shake off the feeling of confusion and disbelief. Why had Mr. Carter left her such a vast inheritance? She had only worked for him for two years, and while she had grown to admire and respect him. She did not expect anything like these from him. Her thought was interrupted by a deep voice behind her “What are you thinking about?Let me give you a ride." Jane turned around and was surprised by who she saw. “No, thanks". She replied to him. “I insist,” He said.
