CHAPTER 3 Austin said with a smile “I Insist.” as he opened the door for her. “Don't worry Mr. Carter. I can help myself home." She said, trying to refuse his offer, but eventually entered the car. The drive was awkward, with both avoiding eye contact until Jane broke the silence. “About this afternoon, sir, I'm sorry...” But she was cut off by Austin. “Let's forget about it, and let's work to keep my father's Legacy. I forgive you." Jane's face flushed with relief at his words. “Yes sir. Thank you." Their conversation became more comfortable after that until they arrived at Jane's place, and Austin drove off with a friendly wave. The next morning, Austin entered his office at exactly 8 AM feeling refreshed and ready for the day. It was around 9 AM. Jane knocked on his door and he answered with a short “Come in.” She entered carrying a folder. “Good morning, sir. Should I read out your schedule for today?" She asked, her voice crisp and efficient. “Go on.” Austin said, taking a sip of his coffee, and Jane began to outline his schedule. “By 9:30 AM you are going to be having a meeting with the Marketing department, you are visiting the orphanage home in honor of your father at 12 PM and by 2 PM you are going to be having a meeting with Mr. Francis." “You have been saying you since. Aren't you going with me?". Austin said. “Of course, I'm going with you sir.” She replied to him but was interrupted by a call from the receptionist. “Mr Francis is here, and he said he wanted to see Mr. Carter." The receptionist said. “Show him the way to the conference room, and tell him Mr. Carter will meet him there shortly." Jane said to her and cut the call. “There is a change now sir, Mr Francis is around, and he wants to meet now.” Jane said, facing Austin. “Was it not meant to be by 2 PM?” Austin said and Jane replied to him. “Yes sir, that was what we agreed on, and I don't know why he changed it suddenly.” “Let's not keep him waiting, but we need to change your tie because Mr Francis likes black tie.” Jane said, opening a cabinet revealing several neckties. “What is the deal with him?” Austin asked. “Mr Francis is a business mogul and investor. Before the death of Mr. Charles Carter. We tried to get him to invest in the company. We sent a proposal and requested an appointment with him but no response." She said taking off the tie he was wearing. A bit dazed and confused, Austin stood up from his chair. She started trying out one when she accidentally brushed against his, and she felt a flutter in her chest, but she quickly composed herself back. “It was after your father's death we got a response from him that he is ready to invest, but he wants to have a meeting with you, so I scheduled 2 pm for the meeting.” She said, finishing the tie. “He is known to joke a lot, try to make him happy and be nice.” She gripped his tie, pulling him closer, taking him by surprise. “Do not mess it up, your father worked hard on this deal to work out.” Once she realized what she had done. She quickly composed herself, which made Austin let out a short cough and said, “What about the meeting with the marketing department?” "I'm going to reschedule it to 2 PM. Now we mustn't keep him waiting." Have you met him before? " She said, opening the door of the office, signaling for Austin to walk through it. “Yes, we met at a fundraiser,” he replied. “Good, talk to him about that.” She said as they both entered the elevator. Jane continued to tell him more information about Mr. Francis till they got to the door of the conference room. “Are you not coming with me?” Austin asked. “No sir, he wants to meet with only you.” Jane replied to him and turned around and left for her desk. A few minutes later, Roseline came to her desk. “Good morning baby girl.” Roseline said with a kind smile. “Good morning Roseline.” Jane replied to her with a smile. “ We didn't get to see each other yesterday after work," Roseline continued. " I heard about the argument you had with him yesterday. How are you feeling? " “I'm a fine girl. And yesterday, I went home after reading it by Mr. Carter's will.". She replied. “Oh yeah! How was it? I heard you were left with some inheritance," Roseline asked." Hmm... How did you know that?" Jane said as she pushed Roseline on the shoulder with her finger. “You know I have ears everywhere, baby girl.” “Rose, I heard you, I need to submit this folder to Mr. Carter's office before he finishes his meeting." Jane said as she packed some folders on her desk in her arms, but was cut off by Roseline, “Don't try to change the topic, we are going to discuss this inheritance later.” “Yes ma.” Jane replied. “Do you need help with the folders?” Roseline asked, stretching her hand to help with it, but Jane pushed her hand away kindly. “No, thanks, I got it. I can't stress my manager." “Ohh! Now you know me as your manager." Roseline said. “Sure.” She replied straight up. “Bye then, I'll see you around girl.” Roseline said, and left. It was 11:30 AM when Austin finished the meeting with Mr. Francis. When it was 12 pm, they left for the Orphanage home. Jane couldn't help but steal glances at his crush. Austin had him talk with the orphanages. She had always admired his confidence and the way his eyes sparkled when he smiled. After some time of talking to them and taking pictures, they donated money to the orphanages and left the office. As they entered the elevator, Austin's stomach started rumbling. Jane checked her time. “Sorry sir, I will make a reservation for your lunch now and represent you at the meeting with the marketing department till you are back from your lunch.” She said, but her stomach started rumbling too. “There will be two reservations,” Austin said. “I'm fine sir. I'm just tired." She replied as her stomach rumbling continued. “Cancel the meeting, and let's get some lunch.” Austin said. “Okay” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. They left the office and went to a nearby restaurant. Austin pushed open the door to the restaurant, gesturing for Jane to enter first. She smiled weakly, and took a seat at a cozy table by the window. As they sat down at a table, Austin said, “You need to eat Ms. Seyfried. You can't take care of me if you are not taking care of yourself." Jane smiled weakly, and they ordered their lunch. As they waited for their food to arrive, Austin asked, “Tell me more about yourself. What do you like to do in your free time?" Jane's smiles grew wider, and she began to talk about her love of reading and hiking. Austin listened intently, asking questions and making her laugh. During the conversation, Austin reached out and poured her a glass of water, his hand touching hers again. Jane felt a jolt of electricity and quickly pulled her hand back, trying to focus on the conversation. When their food arrived, Austin dug in, savoring each bite. Jane watched him, admiring the way his eyes closed in appreciation of the flavors. As they finished their lunch, Austin said, “You know when they talk about the perfect secretary. I always thought they were just exaggerating, especially when they say things you can do, but now I'm convinced about why you are the perfect secretary." Jane blushed, but she tried her best to hide it so that Austin wouldn't notice it. As they left the restaurant, Austin turned to Jane and said, “Please, be my perfect secretary.” Jane's heart skipped, and was not sure of what she heard. “What did you say?” She asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Austin repeated to himself, his eyes locked on hers. “Please, be my perfect secretary.”
