Chapter Two

1082 Words
I don’t know how long I was out, but when I woke up, I was on the floor of the bedroom. I couldn’t open up my right eye, as Rodney f****d it up pretty good. A sharp pain raced through my side as I tried to roll over to my side. Did Rodney kick me in the side, breaking my ribs, when I passed out? I tried to get myself up, but another pain shot through my wrist. What the hell did he do to me when I passed out? This is the first time he got this violent with me. Before, he would slap me across the face, shove me, or yell at me in Italian, but this was the first time he punched me in the face, the first time he kicked me. Pain shot through my body as I staggered to my feet, so I can go to the bathroom and see the damage he has done to me. I gasped when I saw myself in the mirror once I got into the bathroom. My right eye was swollen shut, both my eyes black and blue, a broken nose, and a bloody fat like. There was so much blood on my face that I was surprised I survived that much blood loss. I pulled out my phone to call my boss, but it wasn’t in my back pocket. Going back into the bedroom, I found it by the closet, battery dead and screen broken. How long was I out for my phone to be dead? Then, I realized if Rodney was here in the apartment. I stood still, barely breathing, listening for any movement. It was quiet, too quiet. The only sound I heard was the humming of the fridge in the kitchen. This is the only chance I have to leave, to get away before he came back and finish off what he started. I wobbled to the closet, and with my good arm, reaching up to get the duffle back. It is the only thing I have that will help me get out of here quickly. Placing it on the island, I opened drawers, grabbing socks and underwear, throwing them in the bag. T-shirts, hoodies, some shorts and jeans were next. The backpack was next. Rodney kept a safe in the closet, holding my important documents and the money he keeps for his bosses. Once a week, he meets up with them, and hands over any cash he makes. I stuffed the folder of my documents in the bag, and I eyed the cash and ledger. I know I am playing with death touching both, but right now, I need it to get away from him. Five thousand came out of the safe, along with the ledger, and into the backpack, along with my laptop and charger for my phone. I looked at my phone, and shook my head. It is destroyed and not worth saving. I will have to buy a burner phone, and let Adrian know I am leaving town. My tips from the night before still sat in my apron. Two hundred bucks. I pocketed that and I went to the bathroom to grab toiletries. With my makeup bag, deodorant, and my shower stuff in the bag, I look at myself again. My face was a mess and no amount of makeup will cover the damage he has done to me. I washed my face up as best as I could, the pain shooting through my face. I threw on a hoodie, cringing from the pain shooting through my side. Carefully lifting the duffle bag, crossing the strap across the front of my body, and placing the backpack on my good side, I ran out of the door, hoping I wouldn’t see Rodney on my way out of here. Once I got out of the building, I flagged a taxi and got in when one pulled over. “Where to, miss?” the driver asked, looking at me with concern. “To the bus station, and make it quick,” I told him, trying to get comfortable. “Good girl,” he says to me, then speeds off down the street. We got to the bus station, and the driver helped me out with my stuff. He gave me a card, and smiled. “Please, let me know if you got somewhere safe. I lost a sister to a piece of s**t who beat her until he killed her.” I pulled out my tips to pay the fare, and the driver refused. “This ride is on the house,” he tells me. “Get in there, and get out of town before he finds you.” I nodded, and walked into the terminal, keeping my head low. I got a ticket on the next bus out of here. A place in New Mexico. Somewhere Rodney can’t find me. Somewhere his bosses doesn’t have any connections. I sat in the very back row, away from the entrance, facing towards the door so I can run as soon as Rodney walks in. It was a few tense hours before they announced the boarding of my bus. I got up from my seat, sore and stiff from sitting too long, lifting my duffle bag and backpack. As I walked to the bus, I got some looks from people, some with concern, some with disgust. One guy said I deserved getting my ass whooped for not listening to my man. I stopped and looked over at him. “f**k you, bastard,” I spat at him. “He was caught cheating, and he beat me because I wanted to leave.” The guy shut up and his buddy snickered because he got told off by a woman. I got to the bus, and the driver carefully took my duffle bag, setting it into the cargo hold. The steps were a challenge for me as much pain I was in. I went to the back of the bus, and sat down next to the window. A moment later, an elderly lady sat next to me. She looked over, gave me a small smile, and patted my hand. “Get some rest, sweetheart,” she told me. “I will watch over you until we get to Oklahoma City. You are safe now.” I nodded, and once we were out of the city, I leaned my head against the window, closed my eyes, and went to sleep.
