Lucy is her name; I learned later when I woke up from my nap. My body was hurting, and it screamed as I moved to get up to get something to eat when we stopped. Twenty minutes later, she came back with a couple of sandwiches, some water, and a small bottle of ibuprofen, handing them to me.
“How much do I owe you?” I asked her, reaching for my backpack. Her hand went to mine, stopping me.
“Sweetheart, you keep your money,” she told me. We ate and talked the rest of the way to Oklahoma City. She was going there to see her daughter and grandchildren and maybe move there to get away from the hustle and bustle of life in New York City. When we got to Oklahoma City, I slowly stood up to give her a hug.
“Thank you for being my guardian angel,” I told her.
“I was once in your shoes a long time ago,” she told me. “Start your new life and don’t look back. Don’t go back to him when he comes around. Tell him to f**k himself and kick his ass out of the door.” I giggled at her comment, grabbing my side as it hurt my ribs. She got off the bus, and that was the last time I saw the sweet lady.
The bus left the terminal half an hour later, with new passengers on board. I was getting some curious looks from the new people. Just to divert their attention to me, I pulled my hoodie over my face and looked out the window.
Eight hours later, we pulled into a bus station in downtown Albuquerque in the middle of the night. It was dark, and the streets were bare. I took my bag from the driver and walked down the street, hoping to find a hotel for the night. My stomach growled because I was hungry and tired. There was a bar open, and I hoped I could get something to eat and ask the bartender for the closest hotel. The bar was dark, with several guys playing pool in the back and a couple of people sitting at the bar, one nursing a beer and the other drinking coffee. The owner or the manager. He caught my attention with his big muscular arms covered in tattoos, dark hair that was long on top that was slicked back and shaved on the sides, with a hawk with its claws extended on both sides. He wore a leather vest, as if he belonged to a motorcycle club.
“Can I help you?” the bartender asked me once I sat down.
“Do you have a burger and fries?” I asked him. He was a large guy, with a toothy smile and wearing a club vest, too.
“Coming right up, hon,” he told me, walking to the end of the bar. He talked to his boss, then disappeared in the back, probably where the kitchen was.
“What’s a little thing like yourself doing here?” I heard something behind me. A tall, scrawny-looking guy came walking up to me, holding a pool stick. When he smiled at me, he was missing some teeth. A heroin addict.
“Leave me alone, please,” I told him, turning my attention back to the bar, trying to ignore the i***t. He didn’t take a hint and walked up next to me.
“Come on, sweetheart. How about you join us in a game of pool?” he said, leaning onto the bar. “Why don’t you put the hoodie down so we can see how beautiful you are.” He reached over towards my hoodie, and I pulled my head away. “Playing hard to get, are we?” He reached over, grabbed my hoodie, and ripped it back. He gasped when he saw my face and laughed.
“Your old man did that to you?” He asked me, grabbing my chin and turning my face towards him. His breath smelled rancid, like something had died in his mouth. I tried to pull back, but he tightened his grip. “What did you do to get this beating? Didn’t give him a good enough blow job? Would f**k him when he was hard? Or you didn’t cook dinner right for him?”
“It’s none of your f*****g business,” I hissed at him, smacking his hand off my face. His smile disappeared, and he nodded at his friends. They came over and surrounded me.
“A feisty one,” he tells them. “Let’s see what you have under that hoodie.” He reached under my hoodie and ran his hand up my stomach, stopping once he got to my breasts. The asshole smiled as he grabbed them. “Big and firm,” he says as he squeezed them. I tried to pull away, but both my injuries and his buddies stopped me. I winced back, trying to get away from his touch.
“Listen, I am not interested in playing pool with you and your friends,” I explained to him. “I just got into town, and I am hungry, dirty, and exhausted. As soon as I get my food, I am going to eat and go to the hotel to get some sleep. So, get your f*****g hand off me.”
“Why go to the hotel when you can stay with me?” his buddy says to me. “It would be a lot cheaper and better than a room.” He grabbed my hand and forced me to grab his c**k through his shorts.
I sighed and shook my head. These guys are not taking the hint. “I am not interested, so leave me the f**k alone.” I growled at them. If I were not so badly hurt, I would beat their asses. I have had karate lessons since I was six years old, and I have a black belt.
“Listen, Troy, the girl says she is not interested,” I heard a gruff voice. The guys stopped harassing me and looked to my left.
“Stay out of this, Hawk,” Troy told him. “I saw her first, and she is mine.”
“One, this is my bar,” Hawk warned him. “Second, I saw her first, and she is mine. Now, leave her the f**k alone.”
“Or else what?” Troy’s buddy asked him. Hawk chuckled, and I heard a body land on the floor. I jumped from my chair so I wouldn’t get in the middle of the fight. The fast movement caused a sharp pain to shoot through my side, so intense that I passed out.
“Cochise! Catch her!” I heard as I blacked out.
