Hawk’s POV
It was a quiet Wednesday night at the bar. Only Cochise was behind the counter, while Onyx handled security. Fewer than a dozen customers were there, including several members of Troy’s crew—heroin addicts I’d thrown out repeatedly for harassing patrons. I gave them one last warning: if they bothered my customers again, I would ban them for life.
I sat there in my usual place at the end of the bar, watching the bar and working on the next week’s schedule. Next Saturday, I will need all my boys working because I have a popular band playing.
“More coffee, naat’aanii?” he asked, holding the coffeepot in his hands.
“One more cup, then last call,” I told him. “It’s going to be a slow night.” He nodded and poured some more coffee into my cup, then walked away. The door opened, and my world changed when she walked in. Short, wearing a black hoodie with the hood pulled over her face, carrying a duffle bag and backpack. She looked as if she had just got off the bus. As she got onto the stool, I could tell she was in pain from the slow, calculated moves she was making. There was something inside me that wanted her, wanted to protect her, to kill whoever hurt her. Cochise talked to her, seeing what she would like to have. A moment later, he came over.
He said to me, “I know the grill is shut off, but she requested a burger.” I looked over at her, and she looked like she hadn’t had a good meal in days.
“Go ahead,” I told him. “Let her know it’s on the house.” He nodded and went back to the kitchen to let Tony know to fire up the grill. A moment later, I heard him cussing up a storm in Spanish, pissed that he had to dirty his clean grill.
Closing my laptop, I sat back on my stool, not taking my eyes off her. The girl crossed her arms in front of her carefully, wincing from the pain she was in, trying to make herself look small. There was something telling me I needed to get her somewhere safe right then and there. As I signaled Cochise to come over, Troy went over to harass her. This is not good.
“What’s a little thing like yourself doing here?” I heard him ask her. She told him to leave her alone, but he wouldn’t get the hint. He tried to get her to join him and his buddies to play pool, and she refused. I could tell the girl was getting annoyed, just wanted to be left alone. Troy reached for her to pull her hood back, and she tried to get out of his reach, but it was too late. He grabbed her hood, jerked it back, exposing her face. I felt a surge of rage when I saw it. She looked bruised and battered, and it appeared that her nose was broken. Whoever did this to her was f*****g dead! I don’t care what Titan says. No man puts his hands on a woman like that.
Troy laughed at her, belittling her for not keeping her man happy to prevent the beating. His friends came over and joined him. He reached up her shirt, and I could tell she was either in too much pain to struggle or had lost her will to fight after being beaten. I couldn’t sit there and watch Troy molest her in front of everyone. I got up and walked over, cracking my knuckles as I was ready to fight.
“Listen, Troy, the girl says she is not interested,” I growled at him, ready to fight him if I had to.
“Stay out of this, Hawk,” he told me, not pulling his hand out of her shirt. “I saw her first, and she is mine.”
“One, this is my bar,” I warned him. “Second, I saw her first, and she is mine. Now, leave her the f**k alone.”
“Or else what?” Troy’s buddy asked me. I chuckled and nodded at Onyx, and Cochise walked around the bar. I pulled my fist back quickly, knocking out Troy’s buddy before he knew what had happened. The girl tried to move out of the way, but with the swift move caused pain shot through her body. She stumbled, and I knew she was going to pass out.
“Cochise! Grab her!” I shouted at him. He caught her before her body landed on the floor. Onyx and I took care of Troy and his friends, knocking each one out. They were no challenge as they were weak from the drugs they did. I picked Troy and his buddy up by the back of their shirts and dragged them out of the door. Onyx did the same with the other two. Once outside, we tossed their bodies to the curb.
“Don’t you dare show your face around here again! Next time I see you here, no one will ever see you alive! Consider this to be your official ban and your final warning!” I warned him.
“She’s f*****g mine!” he screamed at me as he staggered to his knees. I shook my head and kicked him in the face, knocking out what little teeth he had left, and knocking him out cold. I looked over at Onyx, nodding my head back towards the bar.
“Let’s get back inside. I need to get her to Doc,” I told him.
“Go ahead,” he says. “Cochise and I will close up.” I ran inside, and Cochise took her back to my office, watching her as she lay on the couch. I scooped her up, and I realized I couldn’t take her to the clubhouse on my bike.
“Here, take my truck,” Tony tells me, tossing the keys to me. “I’ll have my wife pick me up.” I grabbed the keys as they flew through the air and headed to the back of the building where we had all parked. Cochise followed me with her bags, placing them in the back.
“Shouldn’t you take her to the hospital?” He asked me as I carefully put her in the truck.
“She isn’t safe there,” I told him. “Whoever did this will be looking for her, to finish what they started. Besides, we have our medical room at the clubhouse, with everything that Doc needs. This girl will be safer there.” He nodded and took a step back. I slammed the door, jumped behind the wheel, and fired up Tony’s stubborn truck with it whining as I started it. It fired up, and I drove as fast as I could across town towards Mountainview, to the clubhouse.
