Chapter Five

The prospects looked confused as I blew past them at the gate in Tony’s truck. When I stopped in front, Doc and Titan were waiting for us, with Doc’s Old Lady, Raven. “What happened?” Titan asked me as I ran around the truck to get this girl inside and get some medical attention. “She walked in looking like this. Troy and his assholes harassed her. I think she has something broken, the way she moved. She passed out from the pain when she tried to get out of the way when Troy tried to fight me,” I explained, carrying her through the private door into the medical room, away from curious and prying eyes. “Do you know anything about her?” Doc asked me. I sat her down on the examination table and shook my head. “s**t hit the fan before I could talk to her,” I told him. “Her bags are in the back of the truck.” “I will have Blaze grab them and put them in our guest room for right now,” Titan told me. “No,” I growled. “Put them in my room. She is staying with me!” “Do you want to traumatize her even more by waking up to a big, scary Navajo guy watching over her,” Raven scolded me. “Put her in our room for now. I will watch over her until she wakes up.” “Where will Doc sleep?” I asked her. “He can sleep in the guest room for now,” she laughed, then winked at Doc. He was paying too much attention to the girl on the table that he wasn’t paying attention. “I need you and Titan to leave the room,” he ordered us. She might be unconscious, but she still deserves dignity.” We left the exam room, letting Doc and Raven do their job. Titan went to find Blaze to have her bags moved to Doc and Raven’s room. It pissed me off that she won’t be close to me as she healed. For the next few hours, I paced the hallway, wondering how this girl was doing. As I was pacing, Titan came down the hallway with something in his hand. He handed me a wallet. It was hers. “Her name is Arielle Johnson from New York,” he tells me. “I am having Cipher run a background check on her right now.” “So, why is she here?” I asked him. He reached behind him and pulled a book from his waistband of his jeans. “I think this might be the reason she is here.” He handed me the book, and I opened it. It was a ledger. The ledger listed businesses making payments, recorded people’s names as they got paid, included shipment schedules, and one name stood out to me. Dominic Moretti. “Moretti? Isn’t he part of the Five Families in New York?” I asked him. I thought back to the meeting we had with his underboss a few months ago about some guns. We didn’t accept the contract with them because they refused to give us a bigger cut of sales. “Yes, he’s the Boss of the Rinaldi family,” he told me, sitting on the bench in the hallway. “I’m not sure if they sent this girl here to persuade us to change our minds, or if she arrived here coincidentally and needed to distance herself from the city as much as she could. We won’t have any answers until we talk to her.” Titan sat with me as I continued pacing the hallway, hoping she was okay. Honestly, I think I have finally found the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. It seemed like a lifetime before the door opened and Raven walked out, looking exhausted. “How is she?” I asked her when she had walked out. She sighed and leaned against the doorframe. “She is alive, but barely,” she told me. “Doc heavily sedated her so her body could heal.” “Can I see her?” I asked her, looking eagerly into the room, hoping to glimpse her. “Just for a moment, then we are going to move her into our room until she wakes up,” she told me. I quickly smiled at her, then rushed past her into the room. Doc was finishing bandaging her ribs when I got to her side. “How is she?” I asked him. He sighed and shook his head. He told me that her ribs were broken, her nose was broken, and the orbital bones around her right eye were fractured, as though she had been struck in the eye multiple times. He also explained to me that someone sprained her wrist, bruised her right kidney, and lacerated her liver, as if they had kicked her severely. “Why would they do this to her?” I asked him. “Has she said anything?” “She hasn’t woken up since you brought her here,” Doc tells me. “I think her body finally gave out, knowing that she was somewhere safe to heal.” Taking her hand into mine, I sat down next to her and held it, letting her know she was not alone. I stayed there until Doc and Raven moved her down the hallway to their room. Once Raven and Firecracker got her settled, I took my spot next to the bed, took her hand into mine, and sat there watching her breathe. For the next several days, I refused to leave her side. Cochise, Onyx, and Buffalo made sure the bar stayed running while I sat here. Raven and the other Old Ladies brought food and drinks to me, making sure I ate, and by the seventh day they forced me to take a shower. “What if she wakes up without me there?” I protested as Raven and Firecracker pushed me towards the bathroom. “Hawk, you smell like you rolled in hogshit,” Firecracker scolded me. “The last thing that poor girl wants to wake up to is your smelly ass. Raven and I will stay with her, and if she wakes up, she will not be alone.” She shoved me into the bathroom. “Now, take a damn shower,” she ordered me, slamming the bathroom door in my face. I shook my head, then walked to the mirror. The image in front of me was not of me. My hair had fallen from my ponytail, my eyes looked tired, and my face looked like it had aged fifteen years compared to my twenty-six-year-old ass. I peeled off my vest and T-shirt, and stared at my scar across my chest, a reminder of what I could have lost, and the important person in my life I have lost. My jeans and boxers came off next, and I started the shower, letting the water get hot before I stepped in. The water ran down my back as I washed off the stress and weariness of the last several days. After I washed my body and hair, I quickly rinsed off and got out, drying myself with the towel Raven had laid out for me. I heard voices through the door, so I quickly got dressed, brushed my teeth, pulled my hair back, and opened the door. Sitting up in bed was her, wide awake. When I opened the door, Arielle gawked at me as I walked through it. “I remember you,” she says to me. “You are the one who saved me from those assholes.”
