Reina’s POV
I spent the next two days walking around the territory hoping to regain some sense of memory. Emerald had been quieter than she had ever been. I guess even without the bond, there was something about home that settled her down.
Christina tried to have every meal with us, but Emerald wasn’t interest in getting to know them. She only wanted to sleep, and I guess I was just getting on her nerves with my complaining. I found the almond trees Richard had put the hammock on and would spend a lot of time swinging in it. I liked being outside. Oddly enough I missed the snow. It was always so sunny here, but there was nothing to reflect the sun. I missed the golden tint the sun’s reflection would give Golden Sun.
I would just lay on the hammock, watch the cloudless sky, and wonder how life would be different if I still had those bonds. I would have a family, and not just one pack that loved me but two. Leon would be here, enjoying the summer, he didn’t like snow. He didn’t like anything that made him stay inside. Golden Sun would get bad blizzards and no matter how much he tried the power would go out in the packhouse and for weeks they search the forest for dead trees and things to burn to warm it. I had always wanted to build a generator that ran on the melted snow, but Emerald wouldn’t let me care about them. We were wolves, being cold wasn’t a problem.
I had dinner in my room, just staring at the forest. Everyone besides Christina stayed away from me. I could scent Richard waiting by the door each time she stopped by and would catch glimpse of Rowan following me as I walked around. The warlock forgot one thing when he erased my bonds: they go both ways. Their wolves knew who I was. Just like Leon. It explained why his presence never made my butterflies in my belly, or even why if I slept on his side of the bed it was always cold.
I sat on the couch after finishing yet another meal alone. I would take the dishes down when everyone was asleep. At the desk I began working on whatever the motherboard was for. It had some messed-up wires and a little bit of water damage but nothing I couldn’t fix. I set to work, and it felt like hours before the light next to my desk flashed. It was linked to the light bell outside of my door. Since I couldn’t hear someone knock, I needed some way to know when someone was at my door.
I opened my door and was shocked to see Leon standing in the hallway.
Leon’s POV
“There’s a she-wolf driving a car that’s registered to you.” Beta Jeremy said.
I tried to think. I had only given one she-wolf a car. What would Reina be doing in California? She should have been at the hotel. They never called me to tell me she checked out. Did someone steal my car? Was she okay?
For the first time in days, Kane whimpered. We still loved her; we just couldn’t have her. I needed to make sure she was okay.
I didn’t bother answering as I ran to my room and threw clothes into a bag. I found the car keys, the car that I had planned to give to Reina. I knew she loved my car but wanted her own independence. It was almost the same car, only her interior was a shade of baby purple with black stitching and was set to vibrate the steering wheel instead of beeping when warning her. I had given her my car, not wanting to give her such a personal gift when she was leaving. I didn’t want her to think I was trying to pressure her into staying.
Rushing down the stairs and into the garage, I set the nav system to Iris and sped off. I drove for hours before realizing I left my phone at home. s**t. It was almost four in the morning when I stopped at a hotel. I needed to chill. I was freaking out about someone who had rejected me. I rejected her. To save my wolf, but still. I should have tried harder, right?
I paced the room for another hour. I wasn’t going to be able to sleep so I hopped in the shower. Kane was trying to come forward to let me know he was there, but he was still too weak. After the rejection, he was a broken wolf. I wasn’t sure if he would even accept another she-wolf. Second chance or not. This was supposed to be our second chance at life, and something had come to spit in our face.
What would she say when I came to the Iris pack? What would I say? Here’s your car, give me mine back? I scoffed. If she wanted my car, she could have it. She could have everything because she took the one thing I had cared about. Her. My life had become nothing but finding a distraction from her. I would do anything to make her disappear, but it wouldn’t have filled the void. Kane was whimpering, and I was broken.
After spending another hour under the shower, I found the phone and called Masen. He was proud that I finally pulled my head out of my ass to find my mate. He could tell I wasn’t happy, or even okay. I guess I wasn’t as good an actor as I thought.
“Just one question?” He had a smile in his voice.
“What, Masen?”
“You know you own three airports and get free flights wherever you want. Why the hell are you driving?” He burst into laughter.
Fuck. I didn’t even think about flying. I would already be there.
“I want my car back. I had a car special made for Reina, so we’re going to trade.”
I didn’t need to see Masen to know he rolled his eyes so hard they hurt. Little s**t head. I hung up before he could call me out again.
I made coffee and drank the entire pot as I watched the sun rise. Going downstairs, I grabbed a quick breakfast and checked out. The gas station wasn’t too far, thankfully because I was running incredibly low. After pumping and grabbing snacks, something Reina had always done when we drove down to see James, I set off. My Ginger hated to fly. The first time we flew down to Cold River, she gripped the armrests so tight, I almost had to pry her hands off. Emerald was not happy about me touching her, but she could barely move her fingers
I sped the entire time, strangely I still felt a pull to her. Kane was sitting on his haunches, his tail swishing softly. About 20 hours into our drive, he finally took over and let my mind rest. When I woke up, we were pulling into the familiar gates of Iris pack. Over the past three years, I had chartered flights and things for the Alpha and Luna. They had given the pack to their son Rowan and were now traveling. My parents had taken a trip with them a few months back and they all had a great time.
“Alpha Leon, it’s great to see you.” Jeremy welcomed me. “Your Beta called to tell us you were coming.”
I grunted. Masen wasn’t always such a pain in my ass. “Where’s the she-wolf who has my car?”
“Oh, uhm. About that.” He looked down at his feet.
“What, Jeremy? Where the f**k is the she-wolf who stole my car?” I growled.
“It’s… the Alpha’s sister?” He muttered.
Alpha Richard didn’t have a daughter. Not one I had ever heard of. We didn’t have personal conversations, but I should have at least heard about her.
“It’s complicated, we should go inside.” Rowan was standing on the top steps.
I followed him up to his office. He was so much more informal than any other Alpha I knew. A large desk took up most of one side of the room, but he chose to lounge on a couch on the opposite side. He was wearing shorts and a tank top shirt with flip flops and his auburn hair hung just under his ears.
“So, Alpha Leon, why don’t you explain why you and my sister aren’t together.”
