Leon’s POV I stared at Rowan. His head was leaned against the back of the couch as he snorted. “She told us she lived in Golden Sun for six months but left you out. I know my sister. She might not know herself, but I know her. I also know your parents. There’s no way they would allow you to force your entire pack to learn a new language unless it was for their son.” I cleared my throat, that pit forming in the base of my stomach. The one I got when I had to think about the night I rejected her. Yes, it was for my wolf, but I was the one who said the words. “Her wolf, Emerald. I’m sure you know.” I muttered. “Yeah, Emerald’s a real b***h. Not that she can actually help it.” Rowan looked at me, “You rejected her.” I began to choke on the stifling air in the room. “I’m not mad. In fact, I’m honestly shocked that someone who’s so close to the True Alpha and Beta would reject their bond.” He shrugged, “Let me guess, Emerald refused to accept you as her mate, your wolf went crazy marked her and then almost died.” I nodded as I finally caught my breath. “She’s cursed. It’s not her fault. She doesn’t have bonds, so in Emerald’s mind she might as well be feral.” He explained. When Reina was in high school, there was a warlock who was obsessed with her. Not that crazy as witches and warlocks were almost extinct. The modern world wasn’t so kind to spells and technology was much easier than finding and crushing black tailed newt’s eyes. Or whatever. When the warlock realized that Reina wasn’t his mate, he was angry and decided that if she wasn’t bonded to him, she wouldn’t bond to anyone. He dissolved all her bonds, not just the bond between her and her wolf, but her parents, her pack, and any future mate she would have. A spell that complicated was bound to go wrong, and it did. My Ginger lost the memories of her home and family. Emerald having no bonds, became a feral wolf spirit, but would only accept being around people because Reina felt lonely. She had been at Iris for days and hadn’t spoken to anyone. She was home and still alone. Rowan explained that before she left, she would spend days in the forest only coming back when her mother cried. It was the same as what I had done. I would come home and beg her to talk to me. She never did, but at least I knew she was safe. There was only one question I had. “Is there any way to reverse the curse?” Rowan shrugged, “If we could find the warlock that did it, maybe. No one has seen him in years. Dad had trackers on him, but we lost him about a year ago. He was near some pack called Blackstone.” Kane released a growl. Rowan raised his eyebrow and I just shook my head. We spoke more of the curse and Golden Sun. Many questions came to Delilah, but I didn’t like talking about her. My bond to her wasn’t as strong as the one she and James shared. It was always so surprising when people just accepted that I was her Delta, but unlike Axel and James I didn’t have a power over wolves. I was just a place holder as I had bonded with James and Axel’s wolves and not so much to Delilah. I met with Reina’s parents, I had never seen her mother, but looking at her now, my Ginger was almost her clone. Reina’s freckles were lighter and had less, and her eyes were a deeper green, but the small figure and fire red hair was all her mother. Richard and my father had gone to Alpha training together long before I was born, so he automatically liked that I was supposed to be mated to his daughter. Something about knowing my family made me trustworthy, excluding my uncle. He also enjoyed that I hadn’t just pushed Kiera to a warrior but promoted her to Gamma. She was of Alpha blood, yes it was less than mine, but still. Rowan finally led me to Reina’s bedroom. I could still smell her ginger and apricot scent, and Kane was a whimpering mess. He missed her so much, but we couldn’t handle another rejection. It would kill us. I knew that Emerald would never accept us, so long as this curse existed. Even then what if she just never loved me the way I loved her? I stood staring at her door for what felt like hours, I could hear her pattering around the room. She did get lost in her projects. Finally, I pressed the button that would flash a light in her bedroom to let her know that someone was there. She opened the door and my heart stopped. She wore a short-sleeved purple and black shirt with blue jean shorts. Her hair was up in a messy bun on top of her head. Her eyes glowed a bright green letting me know that Emerald was at the forefront. I sighed. “Can I come in?” I signed to her. She raised her eyebrow, “What are you doing here?” I smiled, “I got a call saying some she-wolf had my car. I thought someone had stolen it.” She rolled her eyes and opened the door wider. She walked to her computer desk where she was working on something. I wasn’t very technologically advanced so I couldn’t say what it was. Reina sat in the oversized chair and crossed her legs in a crisscross, this was her relaxed position. Any other time she would sit with her feet flat so that she could get up and run. “Emerald, can I talk to Reina? I’m not here to fight.” I signed, hoping for once the wolf would listen. The eye roll was dramatic, but she did what I asked. I saw Reina’s dark green eyes staring at me intently. I had memorized every freckle on her beautiful face, but it didn’t mean I didn’t want to stare at her all day. Kane had his tail tucked between his legs, whimpering. We both loved the girl, she was kind, and had a big heart, but her wolf hated us. I guess her wolf hated everyone. Or couldn’t care. That was still kind of fuzzy. “Are you okay?” I made a k with my fingers. She nodded. “Why are you here?” “Jeremy called me about my car. He didn’t realize it was you, or our connection.” I felt my heart clench. Or our rejection. “Do you want it back?” She signed, but her face was turning red. I shook my head. “I don’t really care about the car, Reina. I was worried someone had stolen it from you and that you were hurt.” She snorted, “You don’t care about me. No one does. And I can’t care about anyone.” Her hands began to shake, “The keys are in my bag.” She pointed to the duffel bag that I had packed for her. “Okay.” I didn’t care about the car. Really I didn’t. She could keep both cars and I would walk back to Golden Sun, as long as she was safe here. “I brought you something. It was supposed to be a gift, before..” She looked at me like I slapped her. Kane howled in hurt. I handed her the keys to her car. “It’s almost exactly like mine, but yours is special designed to vibrate the steering wheel when it’s alerting you, instead of the normal ding.” I signed sadly. “I’m going to go. I don’t know why I came.” I stood and turned to walk towards the door. I really didn’t care if she kept the car. I could just go buy a new one. One that didn’t remind me of her. Something flew past my head and thudded against the door. I turned to see Ginger bright red and fuming. If this were a cartoon, she would have steam coming from her ears. She began signing but it was much faster than I could understand. She paced the floor back and forth probably arguing with Emerald. Those two fought more than I had ever seen between a wolf a human, including Delilah and Athena. Emerald growled out before staring at me and threw the keys at my head. I caught them before they could hit me in the face. “What the f**k, Emerald?” I growled. She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. She hated signing. This would be a one-way conversation, again. Like many of them were. “You’re mad at me? For giving you a gift?” I signed, “I tried, Emerald. I did. I love Reina despite not being able to know her. Despite you almost killing my wolf. I did my absolute best! I put my wolf’s spirit on the line, and you’re upset with me because I’m giving you a f*****g car?” She growled before her hands began to move. Emerald was a lot slower at signing than Reina. not used to using two hands with fingers, “I’m pissed that you claim to love her and yet you made her leave. You couldn’t handle losing your wolf, so you just rejected her.” “You rejected me first, Emerald.” I signed, I felt the tears pool in my eyes, “You refused to even try. From the day I took you to Golden Sun, you would just leave, and Reina let you. I know it’s hard to control the wolf, but it’s not impossible. YOU terrified her so much that she refused to give me a chance, so if you want to be upset with someone, be mad at yourself. There’s a curse that erased your bonds, but it didn’t mean you had to be a b***h to everyone who wanted to help you.” She tilted her head in confusion. “You know about that?” I nodded. “And you still want to give Reina a car? An expensive car.” She signed. I nodded again, “I don’t care about money, I could buy a thousand cars, but none of it matters to me.” Emerald released Reina’s body, and my Ginger came closer to me. She put her small hand on my chest to make me look at her, “What does matter?” I swallowed hard as her touch warmed my body. It shouldn’t be there. We rejected each other. She accepted it, so why were there sparks setting my skin on fire. My heart started pounding in my chest. She stared down at my chest where her hand was. I knew she could feel it. I could feel it in my ears. Never had I been so nervous. Kane wanted to pull her closer and bury our face in her neck. Somehow she was still our mate. The distance between his mate and our body had pulled him from me, but how. Kane, how is this possible? I felt the bond break. I don’t know, but she’s ours. Check her mark, it should be faded. I looked down at her neck, and low and behold, a part of my mark was still there. “Ginger, can I see your mark?” I signed to her. She looked at me confused but moved her shirt out of the way to show me. My mark was still as dark as it was the day after I put it on her skin. It had been nearly a week, the Elder’s told me it would fade after a few days. I gently touched it and Kane rumbled in satisfaction knowing that we hadn’t lost our mate. It doesn’t change anything, bud. Emerald still doesn’t want us. He whimpered but stood tall. We need to find a witch. If we block Emerald, we can bond with Reina. Can you handle having to share one spirit? He howled in frustration, Better than having no mate. Couldn’t argue with that logic.
