THE BLOOD PACK
Chapter Six: The Night of Fire
The mansion erupted into chaos. Windows shattered as silver arrows tore through the darkness, striking walls and furniture. Flames spread across the curtains, and the smell of smoke filled every hallway. Darius raced up the stairs with the pack behind him, his eyes glowing red as he listened to the army surrounding the house.
"They're inside," Marcus shouted.
A hunter crashed through the library door.
Victor attacked immediately.
The two slammed into the wall, and Victor knocked the hunter unconscious. Before he could finish him, three more hunters rushed into the room.
"Back!" Darius shouted.
The vampires moved as one.
For the first time since Seraphina had arrived, the pack fought exactly as they had for decades. Marcus protected Adrian. Victor held the doorway. Lucian moved through the shadows, striking from behind. Darius stood at the center, directing everyone.
Seraphina watched them.
They were powerful together.
But she knew they couldn't win forever.
"There's too many!" Adrian yelled.
Seraphina looked toward the ceiling.
"They're not trying to kill all of you."
Darius turned.
"What?"
"They're trying to separate us."
A massive explosion shook the mansion.
The floor collapsed between the vampires.
Victor disappeared beneath the debris.
"Victor!"
Marcus rushed toward him, but another explosion forced him back.
Darius grabbed Adrian.
"Stay with Marcus!"
Then he heard Seraphina scream.
He turned.
Two hunters had surrounded her.
Darius moved instantly.
But Lucian reached her first.
He threw one hunter across the room and destroyed the other's weapon.
Seraphina looked at him.
"Thank you."
Lucian stared at her.
"I told you I'd protect you."
Darius saw the exchange.
Something inside him tightened.
He hated the feeling.
He had fought wars.
He had survived vampire hunters, rival clans, and centuries of darkness.
But jealousy was something he had never learned to fight.
Lucian stepped closer to Seraphina.
"Come with me."
Darius grabbed his shoulder.
"She's staying with me."
Lucian turned slowly.
"Why?"
The room became silent.
Darius released him.
"Because I'm the alpha."
Lucian smiled.
"That's not what I asked."
Seraphina stepped between them.
"Stop."
Another explosion rocked the mansion.
The ceiling began collapsing.
Darius grabbed Seraphina and pulled her toward the exit.
"Move!"
The pack escaped into the forest just before the mansion erupted into flames behind them.
They stood beneath the trees, watching their home burn.
Victor emerged from the smoke, badly wounded.
Marcus helped him walk.
Adrian was bleeding from his forehead.
Lucian was silent.
Seraphina looked at the burning mansion.
"I'm sorry."
Darius stared at the flames.
"This isn't your fault."
She looked at him.
"You don't know that."
Darius turned.
"Then tell me the truth."
Seraphina's eyes filled with tears.
"The Order isn't hunting me because I'm a vampire."
Darius waited.
"They're hunting me because I am the last descendant of the first vampire."
Everyone became silent.
Lucian's face changed.
Marcus whispered, "That's impossible."
Seraphina shook her head.
"No. What's impossible is what happens if they capture me."
A roar echoed from the burning mansion.
The black mist from beneath the house rose into the night sky.
It formed the shape of a giant winged creature.
Seraphina stared at it.
"It's awake."
Darius stepped beside her.
"What is it?"
She whispered the answer.
"The first vampire."
And somewhere in the darkness beyond the trees, hundreds of hunters began moving toward them.
The pack had lost their home.
Now they were being hunted.
And they had nowhere left to run.
