THE BLOOD PACK
Chapter Nine: The Enemy Within
The pack left the ruined church before dawn. They traveled through the mountains, keeping away from the roads and staying beneath the cover of the trees. Nobody spoke much. Marcus was still recovering from the silver arrow, Adrian had a deep cut across his arm, and Victor's anger seemed to grow with every mile they traveled. Darius could feel the tension between them, but he refused to let it break the pack apart. They had already lost their home. They couldn't afford to lose each other.
After several hours, they discovered an abandoned mining town hidden between the mountains. The buildings were falling apart, but they offered shelter from the hunters. Darius ordered everyone to search the area before settling in. Seraphina wandered toward an old wooden cabin overlooking the abandoned town. Darius followed her.
"You shouldn't be alone," he said.
Seraphina turned around. "I'm a vampire, Darius. I've survived alone for centuries."
"That doesn't mean you have to anymore."
She studied him for a moment.
"You really believe we're a family now?"
Darius nodded.
"I do."
Seraphina smiled faintly. "Then you're going to have a difficult time keeping everyone together."
Darius knew exactly what she meant. Across the town, Lucian stood watching them. Victor noticed him too. The two vampires exchanged a cold stare before Victor walked away.
That evening, the pack gathered inside the largest building they could find. Darius explained that they couldn't stay in one place for long. The Order knew they were alive, and Malachi could find Seraphina through her blood. They needed information, weapons, and a safe place to hide.
"We should go north," Marcus said. "There are old vampire territories there."
Darius shook his head.
"Too obvious."
Lucian leaned against the wall.
"Then we need another plan."
Victor looked at him.
"You always seem to have an opinion lately."
Lucian's eyes narrowed.
"And you always seem to have a problem with me."
"Enough," Darius said.
The room fell silent.
Seraphina watched them carefully. She could feel the jealousy growing between the vampires, and she knew it was becoming more dangerous. The Blood Pact connected their emotions, making every feeling stronger. Attraction could become obsession. Anger could become rage.
Later that night, Lucian left the building alone.
Darius noticed.
He followed him into the darkness.
"You shouldn't be out here."
Lucian stopped.
"I needed air."
Darius stepped closer.
"Tell me what's really wrong."
Lucian laughed quietly.
"You already know."
Darius said nothing.
Lucian turned toward him.
"I've never wanted anything from this pack. Not money. Not power. Not leadership. But then she arrived."
Darius's expression hardened.
"Seraphina isn't something to want."
"I know."
Lucian looked toward the cabin where she was staying.
"That's the problem."
Before Darius could respond, a strange smell drifted through the trees.
Blood.
Fresh blood.
Darius immediately turned.
"Stay here."
They followed the scent to an old railroad station at the edge of town.
Inside, they found a human body hanging from the ceiling.
Darius examined the wounds.
"This wasn't a hunter."
Lucian looked around.
"What was it?"
Darius's eyes narrowed.
"Vampire."
A voice came from the darkness.
"Not just any vampire."
Darius drew his weapon.
A wounded stranger stepped into the moonlight. He wore the remains of an old vampire clan uniform, and his body was covered in silver burns.
"My name is Elias," he whispered.
Darius lowered his weapon slightly.
"Who did this to you?"
Elias looked toward the mountains.
"The Order."
Then he looked directly at Lucian.
"They're coming for your pack."
Lucian stepped forward.
"How many?"
Elias shook his head.
"Too many."
Darius stared at him.
"Tell me what they want."
Elias's eyes moved toward the cabin where Seraphina was hiding.
"They don't want to kill her."
Darius froze.
"What do they want?"
Elias whispered the answer.
"They want to use her blood to awaken the first vampire."
A cold silence filled the station.
Darius looked at Lucian.
Lucian looked back.
For the first time, neither vampire was thinking about jealousy.
They were thinking about survival.
Then, from somewhere deep in the forest, a horn sounded.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Darius looked toward the mountains.
"The hunters found us."
And this time, they weren't coming alone.
