Chapter 2 Seraphine “When your mother altered fate, I knew you'd be a disappointment.” My eyes shot open as I struggled to get out of the ditch— or mud I had fallen into. My hands were stuck. My heart was beating rapidly as I looked around, in search of the voice. I am in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by only dry trees and an empty expanse of land. “Who's there?” I yelled. My hands instinctively went to my belly. Was my baby? Confusion set in. What's going on? How did I end up here? “I can't believe you died.” The voice mocked. I snapped my head towards the direction of the voice. A lady stood there, so ethereal, so beautiful yet there was something disturbingly haunting about her beauty. “I died?” I whispered. I pulled myself out of the mud with all force I could muster and cursed under my breath. My entire body hurt like I had been hit by a train. I looked down at myself, I was in a wedding dress. Why am I in a wedding dress? Is this a dream? Or just a really bad nightmare? “Neither. You're at the boundary between the living and the dead and it is disturbing because it is not yet time for you to get here.” Did I say that out loud? How did she hear my thoughts? I swallowed hard when I felt a sharp pain in my head. Lucien! He had abandoned me at the altar. “Who are you?” I tried peering at her face as I looked around for any weapon to protect myself just in case. “Your goddess.” She answered straightforwardly.. “Liar.” My voice cracked but she didn’t even blink. “You’re disrespectful” She stated in a calm voice, “Too disrespectful to notice that your heart hasn't beaten in three minutes and you're still speaking.” I froze as my hand instantly groped for my chest. No rhythm. No thud. No beat. Nothing. It was just silence. My knees buckled, I wasn’t breathing. I wasn’t alive. “How?” I queried, tears streaming out of my eyes as my memories came rushing in. “You called out to me for help.” “Please,” I fell to my knees instantly, “I…I didn’t mean to die. I can’t die. Not now. My baby…my baby still needs me. I haven’t even held her yet.” I begged. Deep down, I knew that wasn't the whole truth. I couldn't die without getting revenge on my step sister and Lucien. If I died, they were the cause. “If you go back, you'd die the same way your mother died.” The confusion on my face slowly contorted to shock. “But nonetheless, you have to go back—” “I have to? No, you can do something. You can change my fate or however. You're the goddess.” I screamed. Fear coursed down my veins as my mind flashed back to the day mom died. “I'm only the goddess, I can't change your fate but I can alter it a little bit. Your soul would be returned into another human vessel but you would no longer be pregnant. You have to learn to live like that person and fulfill your purpose. Times up.” She whispered with a weird smile on her face. “Wait, is there nothing else I could—” She extended her hands with her palm up and it felt like I was being shoved. I shot my eyes tightly. ~ I yelped, opening my eyes forcefully as a sharp whip landed on my skin. “You’re no longer a princess here, Elara. You can only exercise those back at your pack, I wonder why the Alpha would even buy you as a breeder.” Someone lashed out, wielding the whip to lash me again when I caught it in my hands. I looked around, the pack wasn't a familiar one. At least I knew one thing, the name of the vessel my soul was in was Elara. “What do you mean?” I drawled and she scoffed, kicking in my belly and I let out a sharp yell, scooching low as I wrapped my hands across my stomach. My baby. Why does my stomach feel too flat though? It's almost as if my baby isn't there anymore. “The Alpha can't wait for long.” She screamed and was about to hit me again when someone caught her wrist. “The Alpha said not to hurt her until he sees her.” That voice— I looked up immediately to see Lucien standing in front of me. “Lucien,” I spat his name like venom, pushing myself up with shaky arms. He blinked. He twitched his left brows while furrowing his brows. “You know me?” Oh, I knew him. I knew the way he looked at lies and called them love. “Unfortunately.” My voice cracked, but I didn’t care. “You left me to die.” The female beside me gasped, staring between us in confusion. Lucien stepped forward slowly. “What did you say?” “I said, you left me, Lucien. To die!” He looked at me like I was going mad and I bit my lips. Shit! Of course he doesn't recognize me. “You're insane,” The woman hissed beside me. “Lucien and his wife are the new palace attendings, I better tell the Alpha that his breeder hallucinates.” The female said, glancing all over me as she threw me a dress. “Dress into something decent. The Alpha would have you in his room in thirty minutes, Elara.” “Babe, aren't you off attending by this hour?” A lady walked over and her face was one I could never forget as she wrapped herself up in Lucien’s arms while he planted a soft cheek on her lips. “Yes, I'm clocking off now.” They both walked away while I bit my lower lip hard enough to draw blood. “Get going already.” The lady snapped and I took 2 steps before my knees faltered and I fell. What kind of torture has this body been going through? She didn't seem like she could even stay alive for a day and her legs—my legs felt sore as hell. Like she had been walking for ages. I can't help but recall what was said earlier though. She's a princess? “I'll show her to the maid quarters.” Another maid intercepted before the other lady would lash out and helped me up. “Princess Elara.” The girl whispered helping me up as she led me away while I pursed my lips together. I can't say anything that would make me look delusional or suspicious. Lucien and Lilith were here and they seemed happy. While I was the one torn apart and living an unknown life. If they thought this was over by the long shot then they better think again. The maid took me to a room where I freshened up and put on the clothes that were handed to me. I looked in the mirror, Elara was a pretty girl, for sure. I smiled as I saw a glimpse of a life that wasn't mine. Her memories. I had access to her memories. “Here, take this. It helps make you fertile so you can get pregnant once you breed with the Alpha.” She whispered, shoving the pills into my hands and I stared at her in confusion. “Why…why do I have to get pregnant for the Alpha?” I questioned and she pressed her palm over my mouth staring back and forth. “What's wrong with you, Princess? I know the trafficking and this place is horrible and heartless but you promised to do your best. Have you forgotten Alpha Kael would kill you if you don't conceive in a month?”
