The Arrival
# Chapter 1: The Arrival The sun was just rising over the old Edwards estate, casting a warm glow through the dusty windows. Jane Hartley stood in the large kitchen, her hands busy with her morning chores. She wore a simple white apron that was already stained from too many meals cooked in this place. The air was thick with the smell of burnt toast, a messy start to another difficult day. Jane had worked as a maid at the Edwards estate for years. She started when she was sixteen, and while she had hoped for better opportunities in life, things had not turned out that way. The Edwards family had money, but they also had a woman in charge who was unkind and demanding. Mrs. Edwards, the lady of the house, was known for her sharp tongue and cold heart. She was beautiful in a way, but her beauty seemed to fade with every cruel word she said to Jane. “You’re in my way, Hartley,” she would often say, her voice filled with impatience. This morning was no different. As Jane tried to prepare breakfast, Mrs. Edwards entered the kitchen, her silk robe fluttering around her. With her perfectly styled hair and expensive jewelry, she looked like a queen. “Is breakfast ready yet? I have a busy day ahead,” she snapped. “I’m almost done, ma’am,” Jane replied softly, her eyes cast down to the floor. She felt the familiar tightening in her chest as Mrs. Edwards glared at her. “Hurry up! I can’t have you ruining my son’s morning just because you can’t cook,” she replied, crossing her arms. Jane nodded quickly, pushing her anxiety aside as she continued cooking. After Mrs. Edwards stalked out of the kitchen, Jane sighed with relief, but her moment of peace didn’t last long. Soon, Lily, Mrs. Edwards’ daughter, appeared. Lily was seventeen and spoiled, with a personality that matched her mother’s. “Is it too much to ask for a decent breakfast?” Lily asked, leaning against the kitchen counter, rolling her eyes. “Your cooking can be so horrible that it ruins my entire day.” “I’ll do my best, Miss Lily,” Jane said, her voice barely above a whisper. She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks, embarrassed and frustrated. “Just make sure it’s better than last time. Or else,” Lily warned, tossing her long hair over her shoulder before leaving the kitchen. With every snide comment, Jane felt smaller, like a mouse in a room full of cats. But she forced herself to focus on her work—as hard as it was, it was all she knew. She thought of her dreams, the life she wished she could have. One where someone saw her as more than just a maid. A little while later, the dining room was set. Jane entered with a tray full of food, hoping she had prepared enough to please Mr. Edwards, the head of the household. Despite his wife and daughter, he was often kind to her. “Good morning, Mr. Edwards,” she said, placing the tray down on the table. “Morning, Jane. How are you today?” he asked with a friendly smile, his brown eyes warm and sincere. “I’m well, thank you, sir,” Jane replied, lighting up just a little. For a moment, the heaviness of her morning faded as she admired his easy charm. He seemed different from the others, and that gave her a glimmer of hope. He quickly turned his attention back to his newspaper, and Jane felt the weight of the house settle back on her shoulders. As she cleaned up the breakfast plates, her mind raced. Jane thought about how different her life could be. Maybe one day she would be free of Mrs. Edwards’ cruelty. Maybe one day she’d find someone who would appreciate her for who she was. After breakfast was over, Jane headed to the laundry room. It was a small, dimly lit space full of dirty clothes, but it was also a place where she could be alone for a moment. Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her. It was Lily, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she entered. “You know, you’re lucky my mother keeps you around. No one else would want to deal with you.” Jane took a deep breath, trying not to let her words affect her. “I appreciate my job, Miss Lily. I do my best,” she responded, hoping to keep the peace. “Your best isn’t good enough,” Lily said sharply, “You should really look for something else. Maybe even just leave,” she laughed, enjoying Jane’s discomfort. After Lily left, Jane leaned against the wall, wanting to cry but holding back her tears. The reality of her life felt heavy today, but she took a deep breath, reminding herself that she had dreams. Later that day, Jane went about her chores, her heart heavy. With each task, she thought of the life she desired—a life filled with kindness, laughter, and perhaps love. As she scrubbed the floors, she imagined what it would be like to be treated as an equal, to experience the world outside the estate's high walls. By noon, she had finished cleaning the house and was in the garden, trimming the flower bushes that bloomed despite the coldness of the home. The flowers were bright and cheerful, a stark contrast to the shadows hanging over her life. While she worked, she often lost herself in daydreams, picturing a world where she could walk freely, wear pretty clothes, and find someone who truly cared for her. While she was lost in thought, she heard a gentle voice interrupt her fantasies. “Hello there!” It was a young man, standing at the edge of the garden gate with a friendly smile. He had tousled dark hair and bright blue eyes that sparkled in the sunlight. Jane’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t recognize him, but his presence felt like a breath of fresh air. “Hello,” she managed to say, wiping her hands on her apron and standing up straight. “Can I help you?” “I’m Ben, the new neighbor,” he replied, stepping closer. “I just moved into the estate down the road. I thought I would come say hi. I see you working so hard out here. You must have a big job taking care of this place.” Jane smiled shyly. “It keeps me busy, yes.” “I’ve heard a lot about the Edwards family. They say Mrs. Edwards can be quite the taskmaster,” he said, a hint of mischief in his voice. Jane couldn’t help but laugh, feeling the tension ease in her chest. “That’s an understatement,” she replied, feeling emboldened by his kindness. “I think it’s great that you’re helping out here,” Ben said, his eyes sparkling with sincerity. “It must take a lot of strength to work in a place like this.” Jane felt a warmth spread within her. No one had ever recognized her struggle that way before. “Thank you, Ben. It can be tough at times,” she admitted, her voice growing softer. Ben’s expression turned serious. “If you ever need a friend, you can count on me. I’m new here and would love to get to know you better.” Jane’s heart raced. Friends were something she longed for, and she felt an instant connection with this young man. “That would be nice,” she said, a shy smile breaking through her worries. They exchanged a few more words, and Jane felt like she was floating. She had almost forgotten about the dread of returning to her responsibilities until Ben waved goodbye, promising to stop by again. That evening, as Jane went to bed, she thought of Ben. The kindness he showed her was like a light in the dark corners of her world. She realized that for the first time in a long while, there was someone who saw her as more than just a maid. But as much as she wanted to dream, she knew tomorrow would come with its struggles. Mrs. Edwards would have more demands, and Lily would probably have more insults. Still, the thought of seeing Ben again filled her with hope, and with that, Jane drifted off to sleep with a small smile on her face, dreaming of a world where she could be more than just invisible. Little did she know that Ben's presence would spark change in her life, unraveling secrets and twisting fates in ways she could never have imagined. With every interaction, possibilities began to surface in her heart, preparing her for the unexpected journey that lay ahead.
