Chapter 1 : The Perfect Husband
The front door opened just as the grandfather clock in the living room chimed seven. Cassian Vale stepped inside, loosening his tie as he walked across the polished wooden floor. He looked exhausted after another long day at work. "I'm home," he called. From the kitchen, Seraphine looked up from the vegetables she was chopping. "Just a minute," she replied warmly. "Cealan and Eliana are finishing their homework. Dinner will be ready soon." For a few seconds, the house was quiet. Then— Bang! Cassian slammed his fist against the kitchen cabinet, making the dishes rattle. "I've been working all day!" he snapped. "Is it too much to ask for a hot meal when I get home?" Seraphine flinched. The knife in her hand paused for a moment before she lowered her eyes. "I'm sorry," she whispered. She quickly finished serving the food and placed it on the dining table. "It's still hot." Cassian pulled out a chair and started eating without another word. Seraphine remained standing for a moment before quietly returning to the kitchen. She had gotten used to this. No matter how hard she tried, it never seemed to be enough. The following afternoon, the Vale family attended Family Day at Cassian's company. The grand hall buzzed with laughter as employees and their families mingled. Children ran around while music played softly in the background. On stage, Cassian stood proudly as the company's CEO handed him an award. The audience applauded. Cassian smiled before stepping toward the microphone. "I wouldn't be standing here today without my incredible wife," he said. "She's the perfect homemaker, and I'm grateful for everything she does for our family." The crowd clapped even louder. Several people turned to smile at Seraphine. She smiled politely, though something about his words felt strangely hollow. Beside her, Eliana tugged gently at her sleeve. "Mommy..." Seraphine looked down. "Yes, sweetheart?" "Daddy's lying." Before Seraphine could react, the little girl slipped out of her grasp and ran toward the stage. "Eliana!" Seraphine called in panic. It was too late. The little girl climbed onto the stage and stood beside her father. "Daddy," she said innocently, "why are you telling everyone Mommy is wonderful?" The hall fell silent. Cassian's smile froze. Eliana tilted her head. "You always tell Mommy she's useless at home." The applause stopped instantly. People exchanged confused glances. Cassian forced out a laugh. "Kids have such wild imaginations," he said lightly. But Eliana wasn't finished. "You also said Mommy only spends your money." A wave of uncomfortable whispers spread through the audience. Cassian's jaw tightened. His smile remained, but his eyes turned cold. "Seraphine," he said calmly, "come and take her." Anyone else would have thought he was being polite. Only Seraphine recognized the warning hidden beneath his gentle tone. She hurried onto the stage, picked Eliana up, and faced the crowd with an embarrassed smile. "I'm so sorry," she said. "She watched a funny movie last night and has been acting out the scenes all day." A few people laughed awkwardly. The event continued as though nothing had happened. As they walked away, Seraphine bent closer to her daughter. "My angel," she whispered gently, "don't say things like that in public again. Eliana frowned. "But it's true." Seraphine forced a smile. "I know." She kissed her forehead. "But sometimes... the truth hurts more than we expect." The little girl didn't fully understand, but she nodded anyway. "Okay, Mommy." That evening, the children had already gone to bed. The house was quiet again. Cassian was in his study, speaking on the phone. His mobile phone lay forgotten on the dining table. A soft notification sound broke the silence. Seraphine wasn't trying to snoop. She only glanced at the screen as she walked past. One message appeared. I miss you already. ❤️ She stopped in her tracks. Her heartbeat quickened. The sender's name made her stomach twist. Vesper. She stared at the screen for several seconds. She didn't recognize the name. Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table. Questions flooded her mind. Who is Vesper? Why would another woman send her husband a message like that? She wanted to believe there was an explanation. She wanted to believe she was overthinking. But something deep inside her refused to let it go. Just then, footsteps approached. Seraphine quickly stepped away from the phone. Cassian walked out of the study as if nothing had happened. Their eyes met. He smiled. She tried to smile back. For the first time since they got married it didn't feel right. That night, long after everyone had gone to sleep, Seraphine lay awake staring at the ceiling. Beside her, Cassian slept peacefully. She turned to look at him. He looked like the same man she had fallen in love with. The same man she had trusted with her heart. But now... One simple message had planted a seed of doubt she couldn't ignore. As she closed her eyes, a strange feeling settled in her chest. She didn't know it yet... But that single message was the beginning of a betrayal that would destroy everything she believed about her marriage.
