That was until a couple years later when I was in his office with a few cadets that had been caught having s*x with each other. I went there to meet a promising young man at the military academy and when he didn’t show up to his meeting I had to ask security to find him. So why don’t you just calm down and use some of these lines on the next young girl that walks in here looking for a nice man to look up to. Because if you think I would start a relationship with a man like you.. you must be insane. Would you like to sit down?” He said as he pointed to the chair in front of his desk and I thought that it was kind of him because clearly the trainers at the academy had ignored my poor sister unhealthy appearance. “Sit down now” I snapped and she looked at me with tears in her eyes. “Please don’t cause a scene” she said and Major Connor looked confused. I didn’t want to embarrass her so I spoke to her in Italian but in my families typical fashion I was becoming more and more animated and louder. None of us were good at expressing emotion, we all just went straight to anger but I was making this situation worse and I knew I had to calm down. Major Connor stood in front of me “stop shouting at this poor girl. what’s going on here?” He asked “isn’t it obvious, my little sister has come here for the best training this country has to offer and she’s clearly struggling. I want to know who’s directly in charge of her welfare and then I’m going to put a bullet in them” I could see in his eyes that he didn’t know that she was my sister “please mamba.. it’s my fault.. the trainers here are nice.. I’ve got some personal problems. It’s nothing to do with anybody here.” She let out a huge sob “Kitten I get it, you don’t want to share with us, but I’m not leaving you here. I’ll call the Beast and you can stay with Teddy and Wolfie, they will look after you until you feel better. I’ve arranged to meet Monkey and Tiger tonight, they will be happy to see you. Bunny is home she’s in love with some American boy called Ashton, she’s having a lunch tomorrow because she wants you all to meet him. Come home.” I said and she slowly nodded her head. “Thank you, I just found it all so hard and I didn’t want to give up.. but I’m struggling” Major Connor interrupted her” you’ve done better than most of the cadets here. You should be proud of yourself. And if you decide that you still want to continue with your Officer training you can come back at any time” I stood up and walked towards her “who’s tough?” I asked with a smile as I held her in my arms “I’m tough” she said as she let out another sob. I stood there hugging my frail little sister and I could have wept but I managed to hold it together. Major Connor gave me a small smile and I was glad that he had been kind enough to let me take her home. I kissed the top of her head “go and collect your things and I’ll meet you outside in ten minutes.” I said because I knew I had to pull myself together. She nodded her head and when she left the room I felt like I might need to shed a few tears but I managed to suppress them. Major Connor and I were silent as I collected my thoughts when I finally looked at him he smiled and said “so.. mamba?” and we both laughed “yeah we all have animal nicknames” he sat on the corner of his desk like he always did and it melted my heart. I had convinced myself that he was a predator of young cadets and that I had foolishly fell for him. But to see how caring he had been to kitten made me realise that he was a good man. “I think that’s sweet that you all have nicknames. I’m sorry about your sister. I had no idea you were related and I hadn’t met her until today. But I’m going to launch an investigation into why she wasn’t being properly cared for” I put my hand on top of his and smiled “thank you because if I launch an investigation I’ll f*****g kill them.” He laughed because he knew I was being serious. I glanced down at his desk and there was a photo there that I hadn’t noticed before it was of me as he presented me with an award for breaking the academy obstacle course record. He had his hand on my waist and I was smiling. I remember the day that it was taken and I remembered that I had never been that proud of myself before. Although things between us had turned sour he had been an encouraging force in my career and it warmed my heart that he had kept that photo even after I had been so cruel to him after he told me that he loved me. But the truth was that we didn’t even really know each other and I had never really seen him outside of that room. “I should go and get little Kitten” I said and he put his arms around me and I couldn’t help but hug him back. When I got outside my little kitten was standing in her uniform that was at least four sizes too big for her and she looked like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders. “So my little Kitten, let’s go and see all the family. I’m sure they will cheer us up.” She nodded her head and smiled but she had tears in her eyes. “Kitten you can talk to me about anything. I won’t judge you, I feel like you’re hiding something from us but you don’t have to. You can be yourself with me, I love you unconditionally” She looked away from me and stared out of the window and I wondered if she would ever come out to me and the rest of the family. I had discussed Kittens sexuality with Wolfie when she was young and Wolfie said she will tell us in her own time but I often wondered why she couldn’t open up to us. “Do you want me to take you to stay with Wolfie and Teddy?” I asked and she rolled her eyes “absolutely not” and I couldn’t help but laugh. “Okay you can stay at my flat, I’m going to be really busy so you can treat the place like it’s your own. Are you sure you’re okay?” She took a deep breath and said “I’ll be fine, I just need to get back to the family” and although my work took me all over the world, I felt the same way, because I always made my way back to that bunch of animals.
