CHAPTER 1—The Woman Who Threw Champagne at a King
The first thing Aria Monroe learned about the rich was that they lied beautifully. They lied with smiles. With charity galas. With designer suits and polished speeches. They lied while cameras flashed and reporters applauded. And tonight, the biggest liar in the room stood ten feet away from her. Kingston Vale. The billionaire everyone worshipped. The king of luxury resorts. The man currently accepting an award for Business Leader of the Year while pretending to care about ordinary people. Applause thundered through the grand ballroom. Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead. The city's most powerful people rose to their feet. A standing ovation. Aria rolled her eyes. Beside her, another server nearly choked. "Don't do that." "Do what?" "Look at him like that." Aria balanced a tray of champagne glasses on one hand. "Like what?" "Like you'd enjoy setting him on fire." "I would enjoy setting him on fire." The server groaned. "Keep your voice down." Aria laughed softly. The truth was she hadn't planned to attend tonight. She certainly hadn't planned to spend six hours serving drinks to people worth more money than entire countries. But rent didn't care about plans. Neither did overdue bills. Or student loans. Or the hospital invoice currently sitting unopened on her kitchen table. Life demanded payment. And life never accepted excuses. So here she was. Working another event. Smiling when required. Enduring arrogant guests. Trying not to think about how exhausted she was. On stage, Kingston Vale accepted his award. The room practically melted for him. Aria didn't understand it. Yes, he was handsome. Dangerously handsome. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark-haired. The kind of face magazines paid millions to put on covers. But she had never trusted beautiful men. Especially powerful ones. Power had a habit of corrupting people. Money simply helped them hide it. "Thank you," Kingston said into the microphone. The ballroom fell silent. Even Aria hated how much she liked his voice. Low. Smooth. Confident. The voice of a man accustomed to being obeyed. "This award doesn't belong to me alone." Liar. "It belongs to every employee who helped build Vale Resorts." Bigger liar. The audience laughed warmly. Aria nearly gagged. If half the rumors about Vale Resorts were true, his employees worked impossible hours. Kingston continued speaking. Calm. Controlled. Perfect. A billionaire prince delivering exactly the speech everyone expected. The crowd loved every second. Aria wanted coffee. And maybe a new life. The speech ended. The applause returned. Kingston stepped away from the podium. Immediately, powerful people surrounded him. Investors. Politicians. Socialites. Everyone eager to gain his attention. Aria turned away. Good. Let the sharks eat each other. Her shift ended in an hour. One more hour. Then freedom. Or at least temporary freedom. She lifted a champagne glass from her tray. Maybe nobody would notice if she drank one. A familiar voice interrupted her. "Still stealing?" Aria froze. Oh no. Not tonight. She turned slowly. And immediately regretted it. Ethan Cross smiled at her. Her ex-boyfriend. The reason she no longer believed in fairy tales. The reason she no longer trusted charming men. The reason she occasionally fantasized about prison-worthy violence. Wonderful. Just wonderful. "Ethan." His smile widened. "Wow." "Don't." "You look amazing." "Don't." "I missed you." Aria laughed. Actually laughed. The sound surprised both of them. "You missed me?" "Aria—" "You cheated on me." His expression tightened. "It wasn't like that." Every liar said exactly that. "It's always like that." Several guests glanced their way. Aria lowered her voice. "I have work to do." "I made a mistake." "A mistake is forgetting an anniversary." She stepped closer. "A mistake isn't sleeping with my best friend." His face drained of color. Good. Maybe shame wasn't completely extinct. "Can we talk?" "No." "Five minutes." "No." "One minute." "No." His jaw tightened. The entitled look on his face made something inside her snap. Months. Months of rebuilding herself. Months of forcing herself forward. Months of pretending she was okay. And suddenly he stood here asking for one minute. As if her pain had been an inconvenience. As if betrayal came with an expiration date. "Move." "Aria—" "Move." Before he could answer, another woman approached. Tall. Elegant. Beautiful. Blonde. The woman Ethan had chosen over her. Of course. Why suffer one nightmare when the universe could provide two? The blonde smiled sweetly. "Hello, Aria." Aria stared. The woman actually smiled. Incredible. The audacity deserved scientific study. "Hello, Vanessa." Vanessa linked her arm through Ethan's. Possessively. Territorially. Like a dog marking property. Aria nearly laughed again. This couldn't be real. "We didn't know you'd be here," Vanessa said. "I didn't know you'd be here either." Silence. Tension thickened. Vanessa's smile sharpened. "You look tired." There it was. The insult. Subtle enough to deny. Cruel enough to sting. Unfortunately for Vanessa, Aria had stopped playing nice months ago. "You look insecure." The smile vanished. Ethan closed his eyes. Smart man. He recognized incoming disaster. "Aria—" "No, let's continue." Vanessa's expression hardened. "What exactly is your problem?" Aria blinked. "My problem?" "Yes." The blonde crossed her arms. "You act like you're the victim." The ballroom noise seemed to fade. For a second, Aria genuinely wondered whether she'd heard correctly. The victim? Interesting. Very interesting. A laugh escaped her. Then another. Soon she couldn't stop. Vanessa looked offended. Good. "You're right." Aria nodded thoughtfully. "My mistake." "What?" "I forgot sleeping with someone else's boyfriend is apparently a community service." Vanessa flushed bright red. Ethan looked ready to disappear. Several nearby guests openly listened now. Excellent. Let them. Vanessa leaned forward. "At least he chose me." The words hit harder than expected. For one painful second, old wounds reopened. The rejection. The humiliation. The heartbreak. All of it. But only for a second. Because Aria had spent too long rebuilding herself to let this woman win. She smiled. Slowly. Dangerously. "Congratulations." Vanessa frowned. "What?" "You won a man who cheats." Aria shrugged. "Enjoy your prize." Then she walked away. Before either of them could respond. Before her composure cracked. Before they saw that some wounds still hurt. She moved quickly through the ballroom. Past wealthy guests. Past expensive decorations. Past laughter and music. Her chest felt tight. She hated that. Hated caring. Hated remembering. Hated that betrayal still had teeth. She reached the bar area and exhaled slowly. Breathe. Just breathe. One more hour. Then home. Then wine. Then forgetting tonight ever happened. A shadow appeared beside her. "Are all your conversations this entertaining?" A deep voice. Male. Dangerously familiar. Aria turned. And froze. Kingston Vale stood beside her. The billionaire king himself. Watching her. Amused. Interested. Far too interested. For a moment neither spoke. The ballroom continued around them. Unaware. Unchanged. But something about the air felt different. Like a storm had quietly entered the room. Kingston's gaze lingered on her face. Steady. Unwavering. Not flirtatious. Not polite. Observant. As though he were studying a puzzle. And Aria suddenly had the unsettling feeling that the most powerful man in the city had just noticed her. Really noticed her. The realization sent an unfamiliar shiver down her spine. Kingston glanced toward Ethan and Vanessa. Then back to her. "You handled that surprisingly well." Aria raised an eyebrow. "Is that billionaire code for public humiliation?" His mouth twitched. Almost a smile. Almost. "You could have done much worse." "Oh, absolutely." For the first time, genuine amusement flashed across his face. And something strange happened. The room seemed to pause. Because men like Kingston Vale didn't smile. They made other people smile. They inspired smiles. But they rarely gave them. And yet... There it was. Brief. Dangerous. Unexpected. Gone a second later. Aria immediately distrusted herself for noticing. Unfortunately, it was already too late. Because Kingston Vale was looking at her as if she were the most interesting thing he'd seen all evening. And somewhere across the ballroom, a photographer raised a camera. The flash exploded. Capturing the exact moment their eyes met. A moment neither of them understood would change everything.
