Chapter 1: The Royal Ultimatum
The bells of St. Aurelius Cathedral echoed across the capital, their deep, solemn chimes rolling over marble streets, towering palaces, and centuries-old castles. The Kingdom of Astoria was awake. Citizens lined the streets, waving the royal colors of navy blue and gold as soldiers on horseback rode in perfect formation toward the palace gates. The Royal Guard stood motionless in polished uniforms, their silver breastplates gleaming beneath the morning sun. Inside the Royal Palace, however, there was no celebration. There was only tension. Prince Nicholas Ashford stood alone on the balcony of the East Wing, his hands resting against the cold stone railing. Below him, the palace gardens bloomed with thousands of white roses, carefully arranged into perfect circles and pathways. Normally, the sight brought him peace. Today, it did nothing. A chilly breeze brushed through his dark hair as he stared beyond the palace walls. Freedom. The one thing a future king could never possess. "You should be inside." Nicholas didn't turn. He recognized the voice immediately. "Mother." Queen Catherine stepped onto the balcony, her emerald gown flowing elegantly behind her. A diamond tiara rested lightly upon her silver-blonde hair, but even royalty couldn't hide the concern in her eyes. "You've kept the council waiting." Nicholas sighed. "They'll survive another minute." "The Royal Council doesn't appreciate being kept waiting." "They never appreciate anything." A faint smile touched the Queen's lips before disappearing just as quickly. "You know why they've called today's meeting." "I do." "And?" Nicholas finally looked at her. "They've already made up their minds." Catherine remained silent. Silence was answer enough. Nicholas had spent twenty-nine years preparing to become king. He had studied diplomacy before he learned to drive. He had memorized the kingdom's constitution before graduating university. Every speech... Every appearance... Every handshake... Every smile... Had been rehearsed. Nothing in his life had ever belonged to him. Not even today. "The people love you," Catherine said softly. "They love the Crown." "They love both." Nicholas laughed bitterly. "Do they even know who I am?" The Queen walked beside him. "They know you're a good man." "I'm a symbol." "You are my son." For a brief moment, the future king allowed himself to believe her. Then footsteps echoed behind them. "Your Majesty." Both turned. Oliver Hayes, captain of the Royal Guard and Nicholas's closest friend since childhood, bowed respectfully. "The Council is assembled." Nicholas straightened his navy military jacket. Rows of gold medals decorated his chest. To the kingdom, he looked every bit the perfect prince. Inside... He felt like a prisoner. "Let's get this over with." --- The Council Chamber was breathtaking. Massive crystal chandeliers hung from a painted ceiling depicting Astoria's first monarch. Portraits of former kings and queens lined the marble walls, their watchful eyes seeming to judge everyone who entered. Twenty-four council members occupied the long oval table. Noblemen. Government ministers. Military leaders. Judges. And at the head sat King Edward Ashford. The moment Nicholas entered, everyone stood. "Your Highness." Nicholas inclined his head politely before taking his seat beside his father. King Edward looked every inch the monarch. Calm. Commanding. Unshakable. "Shall we begin?" Prime Minister William Harrington rose. "As everyone is aware, His Royal Highness Prince Nicholas will celebrate his thirtieth birthday next year." A servant distributed leather folders around the table. Inside were photographs. Dozens of them. Young women smiled elegantly from every page. Daughters of dukes. Counts. Business magnates. Foreign princesses. Nicholas closed the folder without looking. "I assume there's a reason for this." "There is." The Prime Minister folded his hands. "For centuries, every heir to the Astorian throne has married before coronation." Nicholas remained expressionless. "The tradition exists for stability." "I know the tradition." "The people expect a queen." "The constitution expects an heir." "The kingdom expects certainty." Every sentence felt like another chain tightening around him. King Edward finally spoke. "Son." Nicholas looked at his father. "You know this conversation was inevitable." "I was hoping you'd postpone it." "I've already postponed it twice." The room fell silent. Edward leaned forward. "The monarchy is changing." "So?" "The people question whether traditions still matter." Nicholas frowned. "And your solution is marriage?" "My solution is preserving the Crown." Prime Minister Harrington cleared his throat. "The Council has reached a unanimous decision." Nicholas already hated those words. "What decision?" The Prime Minister took a deep breath. "Your Royal Highness..." "You have exactly one year to choose a bride." Silence. Heavy. Unforgiving. Nicholas stared at every face around the table. None looked surprised. None looked uncertain. This had been planned long before today's meeting. "If I refuse?" No one answered. Nicholas asked again. "If I refuse?" King Edward's voice was calm. "You won't." "I asked what happens." The King's eyes hardened. "If no queen stands beside you by your coronation..." He paused. "...the Royal Council reserves the right to suspend the ceremony until succession concerns are resolved." Nicholas froze. "You would delay my coronation?" "If necessary." A duke across the table spoke confidently. "The monarchy cannot risk instability." Another nodded. "Foreign governments are already asking questions." "The kingdom needs certainty." Nicholas stood abruptly. "So this isn't about love." Several council members exchanged awkward glances. "It's about politics." No one denied it. "It's always been about politics." Nicholas laughed once. Cold. Humorless. "You've already chosen my future." King Edward rose as well. "No." "You simply haven't realized it yet." --- An hour later... Nicholas stormed through the palace corridors. Servants stepped aside immediately. No one dared meet his eyes. Oliver caught up with him near the Grand Library. "Your Highness." "Don't." "You should calm down." Nicholas stopped walking. "Tell me honestly." Oliver hesitated. "Do I look like a man choosing a wife..." "...or selecting another piece of royal furniture?" Oliver couldn't answer. Because Nicholas was right. The prince rubbed his temples. "I don't even know any of those women." "You could." "They know the title." He looked toward the palace windows. "They don't know me." Oliver crossed his arms. "Maybe one of them will surprise you." Nicholas smiled faintly. "I doubt it." Just then, a young page rushed down the hallway. "Your Highness!" Nicholas turned. "What is it?" "A large number of noble families have already begun arriving at the palace." Nicholas blinked. "What?" "They heard about the Council meeting." "Already?" "The newspapers somehow learned of it." Oliver groaned. "That was fast." The page swallowed nervously. "There are reporters outside." "And?" "They're calling today..." He hesitated. "...The Beginning of the Royal Bride Selection." Nicholas closed his eyes. Of course they were. By sunset, every newspaper in Europe would be discussing his future marriage. Every noble family would push their daughters toward him. Every public appearance would become a competition. His life... Had officially become public property. The prince looked toward the towering palace gates where dozens of luxury cars were already arriving. This was only the beginning. Somewhere beyond those gates, fate was already moving. Though neither Nicholas nor anyone in the palace knew it yet... An ordinary history teacher named Elena Carter was about to change the destiny of the entire kingdom.
