The Night The Sky Burned.
Chapter 1: The first thing Elena Hart noticed was the silence. The Hart estate was never quiet at ten o'clock. Her father's study usually glowed with late calls, and her mother's music drifted down the hall. Tonight there was only the ticking of the grandfather clock and the sound of her own bare feet on the marble stairs. She was sixteen, in pajamas, with a chemistry textbook under her arm. She had come down for water. "Papa?" The study door was open a crack. Inside, her father stood over his desk, feeding papers into a metal wastebasket. His tie was gone. His hands were shaking. "Papa, what are you doing?" Richard Hart turned. In sixteen years she had never seen fear on his face. She saw it now. "Elena. Go back upstairs. Get your brother and lock your door." "You're scaring me." "Listen to me." He crossed the room and gripped her shoulders. "The Vances have been feeding lies to the board for months. Tonight the regulators arrived with documents that carry my signature. I never signed them." His voice cracked. "They set me up. Damian Vance's father wanted our company, and now he's going to get it." "Then we fight it. We'll call the lawyers..." "There isn't time." He pressed something cold and small into her palm. It was a silver key on a thin chain. "If anything happens, you keep this. Do you understand? You tell no one you have it." Headlights swept across the study window. Her father went pale. "They're early." "Who?" "Go. *Now.*" She ran. Her mother met her on the landing in a silk robe, holding little Eli, who was six and half asleep with his stuffed rabbit crushed against his cheek. "Elena, what's happening?" "Papa says lock the doors." Downstairs, the front door splintered. Men's voices filled the house, low and calm, the voices of people who had done this before. Her father shouted something. A glass shattered. Then a single sharp crack that made Elena's ears ring. Her mother's face went white. She pushed Eli into Elena's arms. "The servants' passage behind your closet. Take your brother and go out through the garden. Run to the Whitmores' house. Don't stop." "Mama, come with us!" "I'm right behind you." Her mother kissed her forehead. Her lips were ice cold. "I love you. Go." Elena ran. She dragged Eli down the narrow passage as smoke began curling through the walls, thin at first, then thick and bitter. It smelled like gasoline. They reached the garden door. Cold air hit her face. She was one step from the grass when Eli twisted out of her grip. "Rabbit!" he cried. "I dropped Rabbit!" "Eli, no!" He was already running back inside, tiny in his blue pajamas, and she ran after him. Then the house *breathed*. A wall of heat knocked her flat on the lawn as every window on the ground floor blew outward in a roar of orange light. "ELI!" She tried to crawl toward the door. Hands seized her from behind and hauled her back. She fought and screamed until her throat tore. Through the flames she saw the servants' passage collapse into a black mouth of fire. Her family was inside. Everything inside her went still and cold. The hands released her. A man's voice said above her, "The girl's not in her bed. Check the grounds." Elena turned her head. Beyond the burning house, three men in dark coats stood in the driveway beside a black car. One of them stepped into the firelight. She saw only his hand, a heavy gold ring on his finger, engraved with a crest she knew from a hundred business dinners. A stylized V. They hadn't come to arrest her father. They had come to erase the Harts. And they were looking for her. Elena pressed the silver key against her chest until the teeth cut her skin. She didn't scream. She didn't cry. She crawled backward into the black hedges, into the dark, and let the fire swallow the only life she had ever known. Somewhere behind her, footsteps began to circle the garden. She was sixteen years old, and she had just become a ghost. ------
