Chapter 1

"Hey." The little girl called out to the group of children, playing at the hills. "Can I play with you?" She smiled brightly for seeing other people with the same age as her. The children churned their heads to the directions of the voice, and as soon as they saw the little girl, their expression darkened before looking at each other. "We don't want to play with a monster!" They yelled before running away from her, going back to their own houses. "Ah! Please don't go--" She lifted her hands and tried to stop them but they already made a far distance away from her. "But I'm not a monster..." She placed her hand back down before hanging her head down low, staring at the grassy floor. Her tears were threatening to fall from her eyes as she recalls all the memories she had up until now which only consists of her trying all her best to make friends but was only rejected and hurt many times. "Why won't anyone like me?" She mumbled, a tear unknowingly fell down and landed on the floor. "Ah." She heard a voice from behind her, so she turned around and saw a boy. Staring at her with wide eyes, shaking and sweating nervously. "Ah, please don't be frightened. Don't hate me, please don't run away I'm not a monster--" the girl was panicking as to not scare the boy, but the boy eventually ran away leaving her sentence unfinished. She watched the boy ran until he's out of her sight, she gritted her teeth while clenching her tiny fist. "I'm sick of this." She muttered, her eyes turning red as black shadows were starting to form around her as if it's a fog. Her mind was already on auto pilot, not knowing what her own body is doing. She was only brought back to her own self when she felt a gentle hand rested on her shoulders. She lifted her head and looked at the person, and smiled. "Mom! You're back." She greeted, but her mother doesnt look happy at all as she looked down on her daughter's direction. "What are you trying to do just now?" She asked in an angered yet calm tone. "Umm... I... I was just" She stuttered, twiddling her thumbs. "Tch. Enough, let's go back." She carried her daughter and walked back to the direction of their house. "Mom..." the little girl began, as she watch the small hill disappear from her sight. "Why does everyone hates me? It's not like I did something bad to them." The girl heard a long exasperated sigh from her mother before hearing a reply. "Because you're different...we're different from them. And we have powers, I know what it feels like having something people don't like...and its painful." "Why do we have powers?" The girl asked, innocence filling in her eyes. "So we can protect the people dear to us... and it isn't given to us to hurt people. So don't ever do that again, don't hurt other people no matter how cruel they are to you." "Okay, I promise I will only use this to protect mom and dad." She smiled, hugging her mother while being carried. "Okay, after dinner we'll be leaving this place so pack your things. We've been found out again by the authorities." "Okay mom. As long as I'm with you and dad, I'm happy wherever we live." She pecked her mother's lips before showing a wry smile. ~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~• That's what I was lead to believe, that this power should only be used to protect those who are dear to you... But what my mother didn't tell me is that I am also cursed, and this power is supposed to kill people in exchange of it. ~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~• Yerin's POV "Hello, I'm Choi Yerin." I said in front of the whole class, but it seems like they weren't paying any attention to me at all and was busy chatting with their seatmates. "Ugh, these brats." Ms Minji, my homeroom teacher sighed in annoyance by watching all her students not paying any respect for the new student, which is... me. "Everyone, shut up or I'll make all of you clean the whole school ground." She said in a dangerously calm tone, loud enough for everyone to here that made them silent. "Now you can continue Ms Choi, hehe sorry for that." She looked back at me with a bright smile. Ah, I'm glad my homeroom teacher is nice. The previous schools I went to, all have rude and disrespectful teachers that I'm getting sick of moving from city to city. I'm glad that I left my parents so I can settle down in one place until I graduate high school. "Ah yes Ms Minji" I bowed at her, who was standing just next to me before facing everyone. "I'm Choi Yerin, 16 years old. Pleased to meet everyone." I bowed at them too, before standing back up. They were just staring at me, and has a bored look on their faces. Some of them were on their phones and wasn't even looking at me. "Wow, you're too polite Yerin. Just talk as if we're already close friends and don't be scared to talk to everyone." Minji patted my back as if to comfort me because she may have noticed my scared expression. "Now then, let's see where you can sit." She said, scanning the whole place." "Ah, at the back of the class?" I asked, interrupting her from looking for a seat and looked at me with questioning look. "At the back?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. I immediately regretted why I suggested to sit there because everyone's looks became more scary to me. "Err... it's just that, the seat at the back is always empty for the new student... like what I read in... fanfics..." I awkwardly scratched my head, and I was surprised that some of my classmates laughed at my statement just now. "Haha, what are you saying? That's where everyone wants to sit and that only happens in drama shows." Ms Minji playfully smacked my back, also giggling. "Well anyway, sit here for now." She pointed at the seat just in front of me, which is at the very front row. "What? But I don't want to shower in the teacher's saliva whenever they're discussing" I complained, and still, everyone was laughing. I can't believe that I'm already fitting in everyone's social circles, maybe this place is actually where I belong. "Okay okay everyone quiet down, and Yerin, sit down already so we can start the class" Ms Minji clapped her hands, and I headed to my seat and sat down. She already started the class, discussing some things about history or whatever but I wasn't paying any attention at all. Because I was too overjoyed by the fact that I made everyone laugh for the first time in my life. "Ah, hey." I heard someone whispering besides me, poking my shoulder to take my attention. I slightly glanced at the person, who was just my seatmate and saw a girl, she was very pretty almost as if she's a goddess. "Umm... hi" I showed an awkward smile because I'm not used on being greeted first, and what's more is its from a beautiful person. "I'm Joon Wendy, nice to meet you." She whispered, smiling at me. "Ah, I'm Choi Yerin." I whispered back, also smiling. "Umm, let's eat together at lunch." She whispered back before focusing back in class, while I nodded back in response. Because Ms Minji is glancing at us with eagle eyes, and I don't want to get punished on my first day of school for chatting in the middle of class. Well, at least I talked to someone and I won't be alone at lunch today. I have been all alone ever since, no one wants to be friends with me... Anyway, I really think she's a goddess. She not only have beauty but she's kind also, but why is she so nice to a girl like me? _________ "Huaah, I'm really glad you're with me Yerin! I thought you won't accept my weird invitation haha." She suddenly tackled me from behind, causing me to choke out the bread I was eating. "Ahh, Wendy." I glimpsed behind me since she was still hugging me from behind, and wasn't letting go. I think she's the clingy type, and I'm not very good with clingy people. "Anyway, let's go and eat." She suddenly grabbed my wrist and before I knew it, I was being dragged along with her incredible speed in running. ~~~~~~ "Haaah haah hah, don't ever... do that... again." I panted in between breathes from running non stop, while she doesn't look bothered by the extreme marathon just now and was already in line to get her lunch at the food station in this cafeteria. She glanced behind me and gestured her hands at me telling that I should go over there with her, and so I did. "Wendy, are you an athlete or something?you're like way fast, are you even a human?" I asked as I grabbed one of the trays to put on my lunch. "Haha, What are you talking about?" She laughed, smacking my back. "Well anyway, are you done? Lets go sit over there." She dragged me again with her towards an empty seat. As soon as we sat down, she immediately showered me with different questions like "Do you have a boyfriend?" "Why did you transfer?" "What's your blood type?" "Where's your parents?" I'm becoming dizzy from all her questions and how fast she asked that I didn't even understand some of it. "Umm, can I eat first?" I asked, my eyes literally like those swirling things in anime. "Ah, oh sure. Haha, sorry for umm questioning you, it's just that... I don't know what to talk about since I never talked to anyone aside from you." She awkwardly said, sheepishly playing with her food with a spoon. Wait what? She's like soooooooo beautiful and everyone here must be her friends and she probably has a lot of admirers, she's the type of person that I see in magazines and tv shows. I think she's an actress or a model with her stunning beauty... but why is it that... "Hmm.." I looked around us, and since I'm a keen observer, I noticed that everyone was looking at our direction with hateful eyes while whispering to each other. "So... you noticed how everyone looks at me, haha." She smiled, even though her eyes didn't. I see, so everyone here hates her. But why? "Are you... gonna hate me too?" She asked, keeping her head down, not even looking at me. Maybe she's afraid to see that maybe I'm also looking at her with eyes like them but... I'm the same as her so I don't see anything bad about befriending her. "What are you talking about? Why would I hate you? You even asked me out to eat with you and I'm happy about that... thanks." I said, while eating of course. She lifted her head and was shocked at my statement just now. "So... can we be friends?" She asked, twiddling her thumbs. Friends? I never had one before, so I don't know how it feels like to have a friend. Should I go and give it a try then? "Sure..." I smiled at her "Friends..." "Ah I'm so happy!" She was about to tackle me but she was interrupted by a sound of clicking high heels on the floor that was headed to our direction. "Umm..." I glanced to where the sound was coming from and saw three girls heading to our direction, all three of them were wearing their skirts really short and instead of black shoes, they're wearing high heels instead Seriously, I've been in many schools because of always moving and all of them has this type of girl around. All school is now slowly becoming cliche. "Now what do they want from me?" Wendy sighed, sitting back normally and watching them walk towards us. As soon as they're in front of us, they stopped in sync and crossed their arms. The one at the middle with obviously fake blonde hair color spoke up first in a sassy tone. "Wendy, I heard you messed with one of my friend's boyfriend yesterday. Is that true?" She asked, as soon as Wendy is about to speak up and defend herself, the blonde girl interjected, not letting her explain. "Oh wait, why am I asking if it's true? Haha I already knew it's real anyway, with all those nasty rumours about you." "Hey, stop it. Can't you see we're still in the middle of eating?" I asked in a much more sassy tone than her, no one interrupts me when I'm eating. She rolled her eyes before looking at me, scanning me from head to toe before speaking again. "Mina, can you tell me who this ugly sea urchin is and why is she with the greatest slut in school." She said to the girl at her right with short pixie hair, and then this girl 'Mina' stared at me for a brief moment before speaking. "She seems to be the transfer student." "Oh I see." The blonde girl smiled in delight before walking in front of me. "You probably have no idea who you're befriending, well since I'm a nice and down to earth person I'm gonna tell you." She leaned towards my ear and whispered in a soft voice. "She's a demon." I widened my eyes in shock, and the blonde girl laughed at my reaction. "Haha, of course whoever flirts with someone else's boyfriend is a demon" She added, while I sighed. "You're interesting. I'm thinking about letting you join our group, my name is Jomin, this is Mina and this one is Hana." She introduced, but I'm not interested. "No thanks, I don't want to join a flock of immature sea urchins." I said, earning multiple 'Ooohs' from the crowds who were actually watching us while they're eating. "Ugh! You dare mock us? What's your name?" She asked, obviously pissed at my comeback just now. "Let's go Wendy." I stood up and pulled her with me to leave the crowded cafeteria. Now I'm not in the mood to eat anymore, great. "Umm thanks." She smiled as we walk through the corridors. "No problem, we're friends after all." I smiled back, she seemed to be happy by what I just said that she suddenly tackled me again into a hug. "I'm glad you're my friend." She exclaimed, tightening her grip on the hug. I didn't respond, I just smiled. It's good to have a friend after all. I somehow noticed that Wendy is acting weird, after she received a text message on her phone. She was sweating nervously, and kept looking outside the classroom. I can also hear the laughs from the three girls we met at the cafeteria while watching Wendy panicking. But me? It bothered me to see a carefree Wendy suddenly becoming scared like that, but I didn't choose to dwell on it because its her own problem and I shouldn't meddle with her personal things. She tried talking to me but I literally have my hands full with my things to put in my dorm room so I left her there. I'm sure she would be okay, she's Wendy after all. But little did I know... That it would be the last time I'll see her alive.
