Adam, riding Betsy, was just a few yards behind Brendan and Diablo as they loped across the broad Texas plain. The sun was shining; there were only a few puffy, white clouds in the sky, and a slight breeze blowing. This should have been a perfect day. Yet, Adam was uneasy. The NFL draft was only a couple of weeks away. Usually free agents had been offered jobs by this time, but Brendan hadn’t heard from the Mustangs. His agent had called saying he had had offers from several other teams but, as yet, Adam’s team had not contacted him even though the agent had let them know Brendan was more than interested.
