Be Careful What You Wish For

“Actually, Evangeline. Can we take you out?” My brother questioned as the meeting came to an end and people begin to leave until it just became my family, Kevin, and even Nate.  “I mean we just got you back, and we would like to get to know you better.” My dad’s frame of mind caused me to second guess my opinion of saying no. “I mean I guess. Could Kevin and Nate come?” My mom and dad exchanged looks before she nodded softly. I begin to breathe easier now that I actually knew them, meaning this would go pretty well.  “Do you want to see our home?” My brother questioned forcing fear to creep up to the surface. As I attempted to keep my breath at a normal pace, I walked right next to my family as we left the room.  “So Wyatt, is it just you and I? Do we have more brothers or sisters?” I position as we met the stairs, trying to make conversation.  “No, you’re our only sister but we do have two other brothers, they’re twins. Both older than you and younger than me.”  I simply nodded not knowing what else to ask but stood closer to Kevin for comfort. He felt like home and I didn’t want to lose that feeling as we walked down the stairs. I didn’t realize how bright it was outside until I stepped into the sun. The slight made me smile, each side stood perfect and calm. Kinds of both kids ran around while a few adults chatted.  Teenagers didn’t matter what kind each sat in the middle. My guess, they were playing truth or dare game or maybe even sharing similarities. What didn’t make sense, they were no elders around and very few mothers from the vampire side. I guessed that both Wyatt and Kevin was able to read my confusion since they were so quick to jump to answer.  “The lack of women on my side was to protect expecting mothers. Beasts nor vampires age past a certain age meaning no elders. Beasts stop at eighteen sometimes twenty-one. Vampires don’t age past twenty-five. You, Evangeline, won’t age past seventeen. Nate, you’re human. Unless turned by your mate, you’ll grow old.”  “What kind of crap is this?” Nate questioned throwing his hands in the air, “being human sucks man. They always get the short end of the stick.” “Perhaps, picking a longer stick?” I suggested earning a glare. “But no, you’re right. Humans always get the shorter stick. Wyatt, why won’t I age past seventeen?” “You’re a different supernatural than the rest. When you have kids, your daughters will be the same.” “You know, I really don’t want to stay seventeen forever.”  “Better than growing old,” Nate mumbled as I shoved him softly but he didn’t move a muscle.  “Wait since when can vampires have kids?” I questioned completely lost. Has my entire life been a lie or what? Vampires couldn’t have kids...or so I thought. Kevin laughed into my hair, bringing me into a quick hug, “Not everything you read in books is true sweetheart.” Silence then filled the air as if waiting for us to talk to them and to end our little side talking. “All this time searching from ocean to ocean, across the world, and about every town you could ever think of. All these years looking for my sister and the answer to this war. Now we finally have both.”  Cheers blasted around the land, leaving a lasting impression. “We’ll try a treaty first if that doesn’t work, we’ll have to take matters into our own hands.”  Whispers seemed to spread like a disease, doubt coated their voices. Fear could be seen from miles away but acceptance of change was definitely a chance. My eyes met with Wyatt’s as the vampire side got slightly worse.  “We can’t just rush into war, we have to try everything in our power first,” Kevin explained as his arms found my waist, pulling me closer as if it was for comfort.  “Evangeline.” A voice from the coward called out. My eyes searched until I found a vampire teenager. “I have a million doubts and questions but let’s try your way. If it doesn’t work, we’ll simply try again.”  “Thank you, I wish we had more people like you in this world. Maybe we would be somewhere by now.”  He simply nodded before standing up dusting himself off. “So Queen Evangeline, where do we start?”  “Please, don’t ever call me queen again. Way too formal, and we will start with training and have to just go about it day by day. Avoid war with all costs.” With that, the groups went their own way leaving the land free of blood. Behind them for a change was finally peace.   “So we didn’t bring cars, but hold on.” My mom sourced. Kevin let go as Wyatt’s hands wrapped around me as he got ready. “Hold on tight, Evangeline. Beast, will you be able to keep up?” Wyatt taunted provoking Kevin. Kevin, who noticed this, simply let out a warning growl but didn’t fight too hard. “Just don’t hurt her.”  Kevin stepped back before concentrating. It seemed like a movie was playing in front of me, heat rolled off of him in waves, as you would image anger would. The sound of bones breaking filled the air, as the shivers of pain crawled up my back. At that moment, I understood why they were called beasts instead of werewolves or wolves for that matter.  He stood almost as tall as a tree, overtowering me by a few feet (give or take). It wasn’t like I expected. Instead of standing on four feet, it was two. Expecting beautiful, clean, untouched I got quite the opposite.  His fur was matted filled with rocks and sticks. The stories I read each and every day, proved they were all lies. Beasts were indeed ugly, and look terrifying. Making me question, why would anyone want to start a war with one let alone hundreds or thousands.  Wyatt’s arms seemed to loosen as I took steps closer to Kevin. His arms stretched down only to pick me up. The joy of flying came to a short as I was met with a hug.  I felt like I was at home, the joy of home filled my heart. I pulled back, looking into his eyes. His eyes were no longer beautiful pale green eyes, but now a beautiful gold.  “Wow.” Kevin let out a sound sounding more like a laugh than a growl. He slowly but softly placed me down before Wyatt pulled me into him. Kevin gave him another look causing Wyatt to sigh. “Well, you don’t have to worry about that. I’m her brother. I would never do anything to hurt her, I promise.”  Wyatt stated before wrapping his arms around me tighter, ready for take-off. “Close your eyes, it won’t be long.”  I did as told and pretty soon, I felt weight-less. After what felt like a few seconds passed, I finally opened my eyes.  The wind quickly made my eyes hurt but none-the-less I keep them open. This is like a once in a lifetime opportunity, why would I let that go? The trees seemed to be ubiquitous but vapid the deeper we got into the woods.  The bright green seemed to turn brown causing my happiness to fade a little more from the sight. We suddenly came to a stop, and I couldn’t help but feel a little bit disappointed. “Okay, I know you guys are vampires but I don’t think you need to act like it. Ever hear of water? I mean it’s only been here since the earth was created.” I stated as if on cue, Kevin suddenly shifted back.  “It’s been this way since you were kidnapped.”  Wyatt pointed out as I took in every detail. It seemed deserted, making me believe people weren’t actually living here.  “Evangeline, you might bleed like a human and heal like one but you are far from it. You have the power to control the beauty of nature.” “So Wyatt, I’m a witch?” I questioned a little annoyed. From all of the things I could be, I had to be a witch. “I always knew you were a witch!” Nate screamed. He raced around the dead trees, acting like a kid that he is.  “She isn’t a witch.” My brother commented, causing Nate to stop in his tracks and his happiness to die before continuing back to the group.  “Why couldn’t you creatures let me have one thing to go with?” Nate mumbled in the background. “You are rare, haven’t you ever heard the famous saying She was born into a vampire family, destined for a beast, but lived in a human world?” I simply nodded staring off into the distance, I am definitely getting tired of that saying.  “Wasn’t she hunted or something. Let me guess, that girl is me.”   “It’s true you were born into a royal vampire family only you, are one in a billion. You don’t age but you have control over planets and what dies. Once you were taken, our trees died.”  Wyatt walked over to one of their tree’s, I followed. He held a simple leaf in his hand following with a slight smile.  “See, just by your presence, the leaves are healing. Touch it, see what happens.”  I did as told, reaching out to touch a simple leaf but not thinking of what can happen. The moment I touch it, it turned the beautiful green it should have been all along, it slowly came back to life as if it wasn’t dead to begin with. “You have a gift, Evangeline.”  I let out a laugh of happiness. For once, I actually knew what I could do. I was starting to realize the power I had and only hoped to use it for good. “So when I go back with Kevin and Nate, will the trees die again?” “Actually no, we should have noticed sooner. Since you left the human world and joined the beasts, the trees are slowly spreading their green. So when you leave, all of this will be and stay green.” I shoved Nate who walked up behind me, letting out a laugh before glancing over to him once more. “How’s that for hope?” “Come.” My mom called out as my eyes landed on a very old but very quaint house. I seemed to find myself juxtaposition the two houses. “I want to show you around our house.”  My eyes landed on Kevin causing a smile to fall upon my face. I wrapped my hands around one of his, pulling him into the house.   Only to realize the moment I walked in, memories that were wiped were no longer gone. They were buried but never lost.  “I’m going to start cooking, feel free to look around.” My dad stated before ditching the living room for the kitchen.  I would take advantage and found myself nomadic. I made my way up the facey looking stairs. It seemed to be strange to be in the house, that I was supposed to grow up in. I pushed open the first door I came too, just to find a room. Judging by the name on the door, it was Wyatt’s. It was a basic room that was like a typical teenager's room. Tv, bed, and the whole nine yards. Though there were no pictures laying around the bedroom. The other three rooms were just like the first one. What surprised me was the fact that there was no color in the rooms. Just white, I don’t get it.  I came to the last two doors, slightly confused. My name was on both doors, so taking the odds in my favor, I pushed open the first door.  It was a baby room, like a two-year-old room. Making me realize, they keep it just in case I was ever found. I made my way around the room, taking in every detail as if it was the last.  The teddy bear made me smile, I picked it up to hug but keep it. The wall actually made me freeze coming to a shock.  It was covered with colors, quotes, bears, flowers, and hope. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. My family didn’t end in this house, it went beyond.  I made my way out of one room into another. The second door just to find an empty room, causing a million thoughts to circle my head.  I came down to one, they had hope. Hope that one day, I would find my way back home. Once I did, I could design my room any way I wanted.  “I know you have a home with the beasts, but sweetie you will always be welcomed here. This room was hope that no matter what age, we would find you and you could make it your own.” My mom spoke caughting me by surprise causing me to turn around. I smiled looking into her bright green eyes before looking at the teddy bear again. I softly placed the bear by the door before making our way down the halls, looking and taking in each picture.  “You know, Evangeline.” My mom spoke cutting me out of my thoughts once again and placing my attention on her. “Once I found out I was having a baby girl, I didn’t want to bring you into this world.”  I was shocked, confused mostly. I didn’t know what to say but that I was looking into an older version of myself.  “What, why?” “I wanted to keep you inside. Where I knew you were safe but I knew I couldn’t. You are so innocent, and I didn’t want the world to change that.”  “You didn’t have a choice. By giving birth to me, you put faith in the world. You were right too.”  “Come on, dinner’s ready and your brothers are finally here.”  Making our way down the stairs, I prepared myself for the worst. To be honest, I didn’t know what to think. Meeting my brothers who I know nothing about, could be bad or good. Chatter came from inside the kitchen and what happened minutes ago, made me rethink everything about life. Kevin probably sensed me, as he stepped out of the kitchen over to me. I let out a soft breath, grateful to have him here. “Hi mom.” A voice spoke as my mom walked into the kitchen.  “Why is there a human here and where’s my sister?” “Our sister.” Another spoke. “Give her time, she’ll be in when she’s ready.”  Taking a deep breath in, I prepared myself and took a leap. I walked through the room, coming face to face with my family.  Instead of stares, as I was expecting, I got hugs. I was forced to let go of Kevin as I was crushed between three brothers.  “I would like to live to see dinner guys.”  They simply laughed but never let go. They tortured me for a few more moments before letting me go. Here I thought they were already torturing me by being taller, man was I wrong.  “It’s nice to have you back, baby sister. As you can see, this brother and I are twins. I’m Asa and he’s Cyrus.” Asa spoke, they looked alike but then again they were twins. Asa seemed like the one who was always more friendly than Cyrus.  Cyrus seemed to be like my other brothers, no different. He was like a brother I imaged, the one that would pick on you. He was the kind who would jump in front of a bullet, then again they probably all would. They’re vampires and I’m missing the point.  My eyes lingered on Cyrus slightly longer than it did on Asa. He had a cut on his left cheek, I wondered where he got it but didn’t ask. “We are glad to have you back sis.” Cyrus spoke. “Mate.” Confusion filled the air as I looked between Asa and Nate. It took me a moment before my eyes met Kevin’s. It made me realize that I was stuck with him, I groaned.  “You gotta be kidding me. Out of all the people, I’m stuck with you my entire life!” I ranted but, to be honest, I was slightly happy with the outcome.  “That explains why you scream all the time.” “I don’t scream all the time,” Nate explained as I raised my eyebrows waiting for him to correct himself. “just most of the time.” “Sure. We’ll go with that, Nate.” Nate mumbled but didn’t care enough to make it clear. At least not too my ears. “I have a feeling you two go way back,” Asa pointed out looking between the two of us. “Yeah, we kinda hate each other,” Nate added.   “Well, this will be interesting.” “See, you guys had a boring life before I came into it.” “We really did.” Asa laughed out. “Well Nate looks like you aren’t growing old anytime soon and I can’t murder you anymore. I hate to say it, but you might actually be safe.”  “You were going to murder me?”  “Yeah, I just couldn’t find a perfect timing.”  “Well, Evangeline it looks like you’re out of time.”  “So it seems,” I joked looking in between the five members of my family, not knowing what else to ask about. “What did I miss?”  “Well as you can tell, I’m gay.” He continued on the story as I took a seat at the counter. I’m finally where I’m meant to be, with the beasts and vampires.
