More Than What Meets The Eye

Evangeline's POV “Evangeline,” Wyatt called out causing me to shove the broken pieces of the voice recorder away from me before looking up. “How did you know that was there?”  Taking a deep breath in, I sat back in my chair debating whether or not to explain this to a room full of vampires and beasts. A moment passed before I decided to keep it simple. “Just like humans, there will always be angry ones. In life, whenever you make a decision you’ll have different sides. This world has been the same for as long as I can remember. Like now, the vampires and beasts want to get along together. While you are going to have someone that will try to stop it.”  They simply stayed quiet. I didn’t focus as much on the others as I did on Wyatt. His bright green eyes seemed to be lost in thought but grounded. Worry was like a fly who flew around the room, not caring who is damaged. His eyes slowly cleared back. The green seemed to come back to life now that thoughts returned. Kevin and his eyes were the same color but my brother’s seemed to be a lighter green than Kevin.  “That doesn’t explain how you could have known that was under there.” My brother pointed out, trying to see how I would've known something he didn’t. “I just pay close attention to my surroundings.” Nate chuckled as he stared at the mess lying in the middle of the table, “Your sister has this disorder that if anything is out of place, she can’t focus on anything else until that’s fixed. So it leads to noticing the strangest things.” Wyatt listened but didn’t make any comment on what Nate said, instead he continued the conversation with me, “Evangeline, who wouldn’t like to have you back? We have a greater chance to stop a war. You were born into a vampire family but destined to a beast who lived in a human world.”  I knew he was right. Most people would be happy to avoid an unneeded war but in this case, it was only most people.  “Most people would but the people who enjoy war are still out there. Brother, I think you might have one on your end.”  “You mean a traitor?” My mother suggested hitting towards the broken voice recorder that still laid in the middle of the table. “Yes.” “So, how do we find her or him?” My father questioned. All of a sudden, it felt weird to say, mom, dad, or brother. Especially since I haven’t even heard those words in a long time let alone think them. “Well, right now it has to stay inside this room. We need to keep the most important plans of attack in this group but not to keep everything from our soldiers on the battlefield. We have to let the kids live but also protect them. This traitor, we’ll figure it out all in due time.”  For once I actually didn’t feel lost, but as if I was in the place I was always meant to be. It definitely felt different and I could get used to this feeling. The only thing is I didn’t want it to go away.  “Maybe it was meant to be. Your view of the world is different and I wouldn’t want it to change.” She spoke once again. I didn’t know what to think.  Suddenly I had my blood family in front of me but didn’t know how to act about it. Maybe it wasn’t time yet. I had a fear of knowing them because, at the end of the day, anything could happen to them. What if I just got used to them there and then one day they aren’t here to guide me? Maybe after all this is done and figured out then we can figure out the family stuff,  “So what’s the plan?” I questioned. I was tired of giving possible solutions and not getting anywhere. I believe that maybe it was their turn. “Done leading?” Kevin questioned. “No, I’m just curious to see what you guys want to do.”  “Alright, so we know that we have a traitor. We also know that humans are playing conspiracy between the two of us. So what should we do?”  I sat further back in my seat as I prepared myself for their ideas. No offense or anything, but guys kinda don’t think outside the box. They say the one thing that comes to mind and don’t think of what could happen. “Kill them all?” Wyatt questioned. I decided to sit back and let him think of all of the possible roads he could take to solve this.  “I don’t think we could just wipe out an entire race. That’s not how it goes.”  “Well, why are they causing issues?” My mom questioned helping the two out. “I don’t know.” Both Wyatt and Kevin stated looking at each other before realizing something.  “Evangeline, you lived with these humans. Why are they causing issues?”  “Just because I lived with them doesn’t mean I understand them.” I pointed out. Who knows why anyone was behind the things they did.  “Well do you have a guess or idea?” My mom questioned making me think very hard for what I was going to say next. Several moments passed as the room remained silent, as they waited for me to come up with an idea.  “I think it’s fear guys. They don’t understand you and well anyone fears what they can’t figure out.” “Fear? That can’t be the only reason.” Wyatt pointed out. “Sometimes it is. You just never really know.” I pointed out. “Well,” Kevin started, turning towards me. “Why did you walk into a forest when you knew the supernatural roamed it?”  Man, all this thinking and talking is hurting my head. “To prove people wrong. I also had a slight hope I guess. If I am to be honest with myself, I never felt like I was in the right place with humans so I figured maybe I would find a place with the supernatural.”  “Humans have the need to be above one another.” I quickly added, leaving no room for anyone to comment on the previous statement I made.  “So fear and power? Is it really that simple?”  My dad questioned. I haven’t gotten a close look at him. He had those forest green eyes like my brother but blonde hair, I didn’t say anything but I wanted too.  I just simply nodded unsure, still trying to figure out what to say to him. I found myself wondering where I got my blue eyes from. My mom’s eyes were brown and my dad’s green.  “Well, that seems a little too easy sis.”  “Well, that’s because you’re overthinking it, brother.”  “Well, what are ways you can avoid war?” Kevin questioned. This time he wasn’t looking at my brother or mother but me. “You seem to be good at this.”  “That’s because I had time. There are so many things, being a good listener, or maybe putting yourself in their shoes. They haven’t really had time to accept anything. Thousands of years being fed lies can and will hurt a nation. Get to know them, everyone is a different person. I’m not saying any of this will change anything but it’s always worth a try.”  They sat back and listened, guessing they were actually thinking of trying some. I mean the war is never the right answer but sometimes it’s the only answer that seems possible. “Alright. If none of this works?”  “Well, then, in that case, we might have to act like we’re fighting or we could always ignore them.”
