Ray POV
“I’m worried about our Alpha.” A member voiced out loud as we stared into the line of endless trees, once again no movement from the animals nor the humans.
“Why’s that?” I questioned. Glancing down at the time to realize that it only about three in the afternoon and that it would be a long night.
“He’s twenty-one and has lost hope of ever finding the one.” He pointed out as he kicked that sat beneath his feet around.
“I’m not sure,” I stated, as I thought of every possibility he could have been the way he was. “I think he’s just placed it in the back of his mind and just focused on running this pack.”
“I don’t know, he doesn’t seem very outgoing, it’s as if he was,” He paused for a moment as if he was searching for a word to use. “distanced.”
Panic escape like the silence in a classroom as a trespasser stepped onto our property. My eyes quickly found my brothers as I pointed to the right while I took the left.
I hoped that this was just a misunderstanding and not an actual issue is given that we didn't have a plan of action sat up in a case like this. The trees passed in a bur, as the dust formed behind me and the noise of the remaining leaves crunched under me.
Everything stopped as the image of a human girl came into my vision. The only hope of mine was that my brother would hurry up and get here before she caught me.
Something about her made her different from the rest of the vampires? She wasn’t dangerous, she was quite the opposite. Usually, my wolf would be wanting to take her down...but he wanted to protect her.
My feet had their mind of their own as they managed to take a few steps closer to the girl to get a better smell. Turns out, she was human? I was unsure as to why she would be here, wandering in the woods without the production of a wolf or vampire in that fact.
My brother managed to catch her attention as her gaze was no longer on the trees but on whoever was coming through the tree lines.
I took this opportunity to see what she was all about, she had the darkest blackest hair that was the longest as it landed past her back. She stands about average height around five feet, eight inches, and as skinny as she probably could get.
“Why are you here?” I voiced causing her to jump and actually turn my way, not covering up the fact that I caught her off guard, “Humans aren’t welcomed here.”
She stayed silent as she continued to stare, making no move to explain herself let alone to start running.
“I came to prove some people wrong.” She spoke, her voice surprised me. It was soft but definitely held some power to it. She seemed to be someone that could handle a lot but once she was pushed too far, there was no coming back.
“About what?” My brother questioned as he stepped through the tree lines and closer to the girl. The girl took a step not back, but to the side of him so that she was the same distance from him but closer to me.
“Where’s your leader?” She questioned as she crossed her arms and glared towards me.
“How wants to know?” I questioned.
“Where’s your leader?” She demanded once again, with more force behind the question itself.
Just then the wind blew at the right moment, shifting the leaves around us as my eyes stayed on her. Her hair whipped around but more importantly about what made her special, her neck. Her neck had ink on it, and she didn’t seem like the person to purposely get a tattoo in that location.
My eyes found my brothers as we knew what it was. Our eyes locked as a smile formed between us.
‘Guys, everything is okay. But avoid the packhouse right now. I'll explain later.’
“What’s on your neck?” I questioned, just wanting to confirm my thoughts. She stood, not moving but to only move hair over her neck once again.
“It’s a tattoo.” She stated.
“You got a tattoo on your neck?” My brother questioned, losing hope.
“I was born with it.” She attempted to look down at is as we took a few steps closer, “the foundation is wearing off again, I need to cover it up again.”
“How about you come with us and we’ll explain in a little bit.” She simply nodded as she started following us back.
“So I thought you guys were beasts.” She questioned.
“Watch your head. We shift into beasts, but we are also half-humans.” My brother went on to talk about as the packhouse showed up quicker than it did when we left it.
“I’m going to go talk to our Alpha, Ray you stay with her.” He demanded as he left no room for any disagreement.
I glanced at her and watched as she looked around studying the walls and pictures that hug up by a simple nail.
My brother came back quickly as the meeting didn’t last for very long. The look in his eyes said it all.
“I’m not getting through to him. Where did she go?” He questioned.
“Right there.” I looked back to realize that she wasn’t studying the walls nor the pictures but where my brother turned. I sighed, realizing that she was a determined one before starting to chase her down the hallway to the door of the alpha that was already opened.
Instead of making a move to remove her from the room, I closed the door and stood outside. My brother held a look of concern as he stared at the two wooden doors, with no ability to step in or help out.
I thought back to the tattoo and the girl, still wondering how she could make the world better by herself or maybe everything we were taught was wrong. Heck, for all we know she could be the end of us, of life itself even.
"What do you think is going to happen?' My brother questioned once again. The amount of questions my brother asks makes me wonder why his name was Evan. He seemed so much smarter than a topical Evan.
"She'll get smart with him, and he'll try to show her who's boss. That's exactly what's going to happen."
At that moment, her voice got louder meaning she got closer to the door so I took the opportunity to step in to see what was going on.
Just as I thought, she was on her way out the door but only paused when she noticed me. I glanced back and forth between the two before I noticed that she indeed moved from her spot. I reached out to stop her making her cry out from being caught off guard.
Kevin became prepared to overstep if needed but also wanted to know what I knew. I took this chance to speak out.
"Have you seen her neck?" I questioned as I moved her hair to the side pulling her closer to Kevin by a few steps. Kevin, shocked, was at a loss for words.
"Is that?" He started but didn't continue as he quickly made his way over no doubt happy.
"Yes, it’s the mark. This human will be the difference that we need. She is the difference that we have."
She got frustrated and tried to pull away as I ended up releasing her.
"What does this stupid mark have to deal with you beasts?' She mumbled out annoyed and silently scared.
"Trust me, time with tell all, my love," Kevin spoke out before quickly removing her from the room. My guess, placing her in a safe place.
