Chapter 1...Familiar Vibe
Mia Jackson waited for the city train. It was a rainy afternoon after a long day of work. She tucked her sapphire scarf under her coat's collar to keep it from falling to the ground. Her fingers ached from the typing on the computer keyboard, she had to have the data entered a certain time before her boss's deadline to deliver it. She groaned at the thought of work. Overworked and underpaid was the story of most people trying to make a living in the hustle and bustle of the city. This was her everyday routine, then just to go home to an empty apartment to find something of interest on television.
She vowed to herself that her boredom and loneliness wouldn't cause her to make impulsive decisions that would end up hurting her heart. The last fling she had, she found out he had five kids with a ghetto-fide wife that wanted to fist-fight her outside of her job! Sounds funny now, but it got pretty intense with this woman nearly stalking her, and she had to get a restraining order and all. Situations like that make a person want to give up on relationships, trust, and love, something we can't seem to do without, even the toughest of people yearns for it. It was the way we were designed, Mia's grandmother used to say. The drizzling rain turned into drops and the wind started to blow in different directions, almost gushing into Mia's light-brown face.
"Where is this train already?" She said aloud with others waiting with her agreeing, nodding their heads. She was annoyed. She suddenly felt someone brush up against her, she looked up at a man with a broad jawline and piercing dark eyes looking down at her. She frowned at him, disapproving his closeness. He apologized and offered her to be shielded by the blowing rain. She reluctantly agreed. She'd just gotten over a summer cold, and didn't want to be soaking wet by the time she got home.
"I'm Reid, nice to meet you." he said. Mia nodded hello, and left it to them. She wasn't trying to introduce herself, was asked for her number and the rest of the familiar routine that came along with it. The train finally arrived and she entered the train car. The guy Reid entered the same one. She took a seat, standing on her heels for the last hour and was taking its toll. Reid stood a few inches away just looking outward through the train car's window. Thirty minutes later, Mia stepped off at her stop. She walked up the steps out of the city's train station onto her street that led to her apartment.
The rain had let up to a light drizzle. She let out a sigh as her heels clicked clacked down the sidewalk. She could hear footsteps not too far behind. Maybe some other people who'd gotten off at her stop, she thought. A few cars passed on the roadway. It was now dusk, the street lights were coming on, it was a little darker than usual because of the heavy rain clouds. A few more feet and she would be at her place. She didn't know why she felt unsettled, like she was being watched or something. She walked faster, clutching her purse strap over her shoulder. A few more paychecks saved, she would have the car she'd been saving for. She suddenly opened the flap of her purse, reached inside and searched for her pepper spray! Grandma always tells her it's not safe for women to be walking alone at night. Mia could hear footsteps closer!
"Hey ma'am!" She heard someone call. Her heartbeat quickened! Never had a problem all the days home till' today, she didn't want this person following her to where she lived! She took out her cellphone from her jacket pocket, grabbed her pepper spray in the other hand and stopped in her tracks and spun around! She waited for whomever called her to appear! She couldn't say she was shocked to see the guy Reid walking toward her!
"I"m on the phone with the police and if you come any closer I will spray you!" She spat. He chuckled and reached and handed her her sapphire scarf. She must've dropped it as they got on the train. She didn't take it from his hand. The police operator answered the phone.
