“Zodiac! Turn around!”
“No! Blood! Louise! I’m not weak!”
“You stupid mutt, why did we leave her…?”
“That scent…” Zodiac howled. “It makes me… It makes me furious…! I want to kill!”
I exploded from my human form in a roar that rumbled the ground. Zodiac’s enormous silver body landed with all four paws against a nearby tree trunk and shoved off with all his might, splitting it through the centre with an echoing crack. The two torn pieces crashed to the ground with a vibrating thud that sent all the critters scattering.
“Blood … Louise’s blood!” Zodiac ran between the towering trees. Each large footfall sent more wild creatures into burrows, his snarls and growls consuming every ebbing thought about Louise and her tender lips.
