Shadows of Doubt

589 Words
I only had three days off, and already the company was ready to lay me off. I couldn’t believe it. I hung up the phone and decided to go straight to the office. As soon as I stepped in, I overheard whispers—my colleagues were talking about me. Maya Reynolds, my close friend, pulled me aside and quietly said, “Emma, because of your connection with Grayson Carter yesterday, some photos leaked online, and it’s damaging the company’s reputation.” I was stunned. I had no idea this was happening. When I checked my phone, all the photos were gone—wiped clean, and all traces of me and Grayson blocked everywhere. I thanked Maya and walked into the manager’s office to face the music. He didn’t even look up. He slid a resignation letter across the desk. “Emma, whatever happened online has hurt the company’s name. You need to fill this out.” I opened my mouth to argue. “Sir, I’m a victim here too! I didn’t post anything.” He waved me off, cold. “Enough. Logan Lewis saw you leaving with Grayson Carter. That’s enough for us.” His face had gone pale, and I realized there was no point in fighting. I took the letter, filled it out, and was told to pack my things. In less than a month, my whole life had flipped upside down. I stood by the curb, clutching my box of things, waiting for a taxi, when a sleek car pulled up suddenly. “Miss Emma?” a voice called. I nodded, cautious. “Yes? Who’s this?” “I’m Logan Lewis, Grayson Carter’s secretary. Mr. Carter wants to speak with you about those photos. Please come with me.” Before I could ask a thing, I found myself getting into the car. Half an hour later, Logan dropped me off at my place. Grayson was waiting downstairs, expression cold as ice. “Emma, you know why I asked you here.” “What do you mean, Mr. Carter? You think I posted those photos?” He didn’t blink. “Shouldn’t I be asking you the same? Drugging me, dragging me around, then taking pictures like that…” He stepped closer, eyes sharp. “Emma, are you really that bold?” My heart pounded. I swallowed my fear. “It wasn’t me. I’m just as much a victim in all this.” He laughed bitterly. “Then why did your behavior that night scream otherwise?” I didn’t know how to explain. It felt like he already decided I was guilty. “I’m telling you, Grayson. Yes, I wanted your attention — but I never drugged you or leaked any photos. Why would I do that?” He narrowed his eyes. “There has to be a reason. Shirley took your boyfriend. You’re hurt and want to get back at her… by using me. Isn’t that it?” His words hit like a punch. I fought back tears. “No. I’m not that stupid. If I wanted revenge, I wouldn’t hurt myself. I’d go after them directly. Should I really drag you into this just so I could become Shirley’s aunt?” “So you seduced me... just so you could marry me?” “Yes! Don’t you get it? I wouldn’t be satisfied with anything less.” He looked at me, confused, his brow furrowed deeply. I hesitated, then finally asked, “What’s going on with you, Grayson? Why do you doubt me like this?”
