Among lush vineyards in Napa Valley, Alexander Kingston is a very powerful billionaire CEO who covers his inner hollowness with a glamorous veneer. Despite his success, tragedy from his past still haunts him, making him keep a distance from people.

Struggling reporter Lily Carter gets an assignment to investigate the elusive Alexander. Their very first meeting at a charity gala turns into a heated argument; she does not know who he is. Amused by her fiery spirit, Alex keeps his identity incognito as the two of them are allowed to continue crossing each other's paths.

Feelings then begin to grow as Lily reveals the tender side of Alex that was developed under the wise, close eye of his grandfather, Henry Kingston. Their budding relationship will soon become radically challenged by Alex's cunning ex-fiancée, Victoria Hart, and Lily's skeptical mother, Grace Carter.

CHAPTER1
Lily Carter sat at her small desk in her cozy apartment, where her mother and brother moved about in the other two rooms. A lamp did little to illuminate her cluttered surface, home to all her notebooks, laptop, and several clippings from some freelance journalism work she had done. Outside in the city, traffic and voices awoke to the otherwise peaceful views from her home bungalow. It had been one very, very long day. She'd spent hours digging up leads, all to turn up a few paltry dollars. Fatigue dragged at her, only to be washed away by that surge of excitement. Tomorrow was the night of the charity gala at the Kingston estate—the very event that could make her career. She'd been given a rare press pass—an opportunity to rub shoulders with people at the top and maybe find the story that would really put her on the map. She looked toward the back of her closet door and surveyed the old dress. It wasn't much, but it would have to do. She couldn't afford to replace it, and she wasn't one for appearances anyway. She thought at once of her mother, Grace, who was a fine artist, working from home until her failing health made employment impossible. She also had a younger brother, Ethan, a techno head who spent most of his time tinkering in the living room with secondhand gadgets and juggling freelance coding jobs to barely make ends meet. They were a close family; though lately, life hadn't been easy. The next evening, Lily gaped at the opulence that was the Kingston estate. She never really was this close to such luxury. With twinkling lights, the mansion and guests alike glinted in designer gowns and tuxedos, ringing with laughter. She felt very out of place, but the reminder of what she was here for—the story that would draw in her audience, really show the world that she was a worthy journalist—stiffened Lily's resolve. She had wandered into the hall when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Turning around, she was met by the most beautiful face of a very handsome man, towering with powerful stature and a body that carried a tailored black suit like a glove. His look was intense, quickening her heartbeats. "You look new to these parts," the man commented finally, curiosity breaking through strangeness. Lily stumbled a bit. "I-I am here to c-cover the event as part of a feature I'm working on." She took a deep breath and some composure, extending her right hand. "Lily Carter." He gripped her hand—firm but gentle in his grasp. "Alex," he said, not offering a last name. They exchanged a few polite words, and Lily felt this weird mixture of irritation and attraction. There was an air of mystery and confidence within him, which borders into arrogance. She could not quite describe it, but he seemed to be challenging her in some kind of way. Their conversation was so easy and natural that it presently took a very surprising turn. Alex made some remark about the amount of money there was going about in these days, and Lily winced. She could not refrain from needling him a little, pointing out the contrast between this opulence and the lean, starving poverty just outside in the world of people like her parents. A tiny smile pulled at the corners of Alex's face. He seemed to be almost amused by her boldness, as if he had expected that no one would speak so frankly to him. "You don't fear saying what is in your mind, huh?" he noticed, a glint of respect appearing in his eyes. Lily just shrugged, trying not to back down. "Someone has to. Not everyone here is insulated by a bubble of luxury. Before she could say any more, the speakers announced, begging the guests' attention and opening the night. Alex excused himself with a nod, and Lily was left to think over that brief, very intense encounter. Who was he, really? The more the night wore away, the more the feelings inside Lily did too. Of course, the gala had been an exposure, but that encounter with Alex stayed in her mind. She couldn't just shake off the feeling that there was so much within him beyond all the obvious things. Not a clue had she had that this chance encounter would set into motion a chain of events that would shake her life to its core. Stepping out into the cool night air, Lily shivered for a reason having nothing to do with the temperature. She glanced once more over her shoulder at the mansion, her heart beating out a mixed cadence of anticipation and uncertainty. Though she was only at the very beginning of the story she wanted to find, she had no idea how much it would draw he Stepping out into the chill of the night, she shivered. The evening had been overwhelming, a sea of glitz and glamour that was far removed from what daily life was for her. It was surreal to top off all that she had gone through over the past days. Unreal, like Alex, and this world he was exposing her to. She stood at the door, waiting for the ride-sharing car she had hailed, when her phone buzzed with a message. It was Maya, her best friend, who wanted to know about the night. Quick on her part, Lily responded, trying to capture that weird mix of awe and uneasiness in a few words. She went on about the too-much decorations, the fancy dresses—and after a moment's pause, what had happened with Alex. There was something about him that jarred with her, and though she couldn't explain why, she felt the need to tell it to Maya. She couldn't help but take a last, lingering glance as she waited at the mansion. It was these great sprawling gardens and twinkling lights that gave an otherworldly air to everything, impressing upon her memory all too forcibly the contrasts between it and her own humble home. Of course, she had known right from the start that she did not belong in that world; still, its attraction was inescapable. A sleek black car pulled up to her; the window rolled down, revealing the now-familiar face of Alex. He leaned forward; the illumination cast by the streetlights upon his expression was all but imperceptible. There was something smooth in the way he moved, a demeanor that spoke of one used to control and influence. "Already leaving?" he asked, his voice as smooth as velvet. "I don't think we really spoke inside." Lily blinked. She was quite startled by his sudden appearance. She had absolutely not thought to see him again, let alone so soon. Her heart began racing with confusion and wariness washing over her. What did he want of her? Alex must have seen her hesitation. He smiled a little, a reassuring smile. "There is something about you, Lily. You are. different. I would like to know you more." Before she could say anything, the ride-share driver blew the horn to warn her that he was there. Alex looked at the sound of the horn before turning back to her; his face was soft. "Consider it," he pressed gently, but quite resolutely. "Meet me tomorrow at the **Kingston Plaza** for coffee. 10:00 AM. We can continue our conversation." With that, he leaned back and the car started to drive off. There stood Lily, her mind racing. He definitely wasn't boding any invitation, and to be honest, neither did she. There was something about Alex—some unplaceable something not quite gelling right with her. A mystery that piqued her even while keeping her on her guard. A dark car approached, and a gale of feelings washed up in Lily. Should she face him? Was it really worth the shot? The only thing sure was that her life was going to change drastically in some way or other, and she couldn't shake off the feeling that whichever way it went, it would change everything. Lily is about to turn her back on her ride-share when her phone vibrates once more. It vibrates with an unknown number and a simple message on the screen: "Be careful who you trust. Not everything is as it seems." She looks around, feeling naked and so unsur e all of a sudden. Who has contacted her? And why?
