Of Embers and Briefs is a heartwarming and subtly passionate story about finding warmth in the most unexpected places. It’s about the rescue that happens after the storm; the slow, sweet thawing of two guarded hearts, and the new family that blossoms when a fierce protector meets his match, and a woman who saves everything but herself finally allows someone to save her.

Chapter 1: The Whiteout
Maya’s vacation was supposed to be two weeks of serene, snowy silence. A luxury cabin in the Pinecrest Mountains, a stack of unread novels, and absolutely no conference calls. As a top-tier corporate lawyer, her life was a whirlwind of depositions and deadlines. This was her sanctuary. But the weather had other plans. What began as gentle flurries transformed, in a matter of hours, into a furious, howling beast of a storm. The power flickered, died, and plunged her elegant cabin into a deep, cold darkness. The fireplace, her last hope, remained stubbornly cold, its chimney apparently blocked by drifting snow. Panic, a feeling she usually defended clients against, began to claw its way up her throat. Her cell phone had no signal. She was stranded, utterly alone, and the temperature was dropping fast. --- At Station 7, Ben "Cap" O’Connell was finishing his shift when the emergency call crackled through. "Disabled vehicle on Ridge Road, possible occupant. Then a welfare check at Pinecrest Cabin 3. Power’s out, lines down all over that ridge." His crew was already stretched thin. "I’ll take the cabin check," Ben said, pulling his heavy coat back on. It was near his neighborhood anyway. He thought of his seven-year-old daughter, Lily, safe at his neighbor’s house for the evening. He wanted every other person to have that same safety. The drive was a battle. His red truck, equipped with plow and emergency lights, pushed through drifts that reached the headlights. The wind screamed, painting the world in violent strokes of white. He found the cabin, its outline barely visible. He pounded on the door. "Fire department! Anyone home?" The door swung open, and for a second, Ben forgot the cold. The woman standing there was wrapped in a blanket, but he could see the elegant lines of her face, sharp with intelligence and fear. Her dark eyes were wide. She looked like she belonged in a high-rise office, not a freezing mountain cabin. "Thank God," she breathed, her voice a shiver of relief. "The fireplace won’t light. I think the flue is iced over." Ben stepped inside, his boots tracking snow. "Ma’am, you can’t stay here. It’s not safe. The whole ridge is losing power. We’re recommending evacuation to the community center." "The roads are impassable," she said, and he heard the lawyer in her—logical, assessing risk. "I tried to drive out an hour ago. My rental is buried." "Then you’ll come with me," Ben said, his voice leaving no room for argument. He was used to giving orders in emergencies. "I’m Ben. I live in the valley. It’s not a five-star resort, but it’s warm, and it’s safe." She hesitated, pride warring with primal need for warmth. The cabin gave an ominous creak under a gust of wind. "Maya," she said finally, offering a hand. Her grip was firm, but her fingers were like ice. "And I suppose I don’t have a better option."
