CHAPTER 1: The First Click
Hailey Brooke, 17, had always been more comfortable with books than people. Her room, cluttered with sci-fi novels and textbooks, mirrored her introspective nature. It was a typical evening, and she found herself scrolling through her phone, her curiosity piqued by an online dating app she had downloaded on a whim.
Hailey: (muttering) “Let’s see what this is all about.”
Her profile, a mix of her favorite sci-fi references and her love for obscure trivia, seemed to attract the attention of Jessy Collins, an eighteen-year-old who was a local legend for his academic prowess and musical talent. His profile was striking - photos of him at science fairs, performing at concerts, and participating in a various extracurricular activities.
Hailey: (typing nervously) “Hi! I noticed we both love sci-fi. What’s your favorite series or book?”
Within minutes, Jessy replied, his message filled with enthusiasm.
Jessy:”Hey there! I’m really into Dune right now. The way Herbert imagined the future is just amazing. How about you? Any favorites?”
Hailey: (excitedly) “I’m a huge fan of Foundation by Asimov. The concept of psychohistory is fascinating. Have you read any of his other works?
Their conversation flowed naturally, with Jessy sharing insights on his favorite books and discussing his recent science project. Hailey found herself eagerly awaiting each new message, the interaction becoming a bright spot in her routine.
Jessy: “It’s great to find someone who gets excited about sci-fi. Most people just not along when I talk about it.”
Hailey: “I know what you mean. It’s refreshing to find someone who shares the same passion. Maybe we can chat more about our favorite theories.”
Jessy: “That sounds like a plan. I’m looking forward to it.”
The exchange between them became more frequent, their conversations spanning a variety of topics. They discovered a shared love for science fiction, intellectual debates, and even a few quirky interests. Hailey found herself growing more interested in Jessy with each passing day.
