Chapter4[CampusCrush]

Riley decided that she wanted to find a new apartment, so she used all of her Saturday in packing and searching for house agents. Her rent would be due soon anyway. It didn't occur to her before, but all of her money had been spent on taking care of the family that Henry had never paid the rent for once! At least her new salary a month would cover all expenses if she arranged a sensible apartment, so she could risk all of her savings and maybe that of Toby's. Maybe they will be living together now, since Toby has just done with college and will still be in town for the time being. He would get a good job, hopefully, and everything would be alright. She'll need to have a word with him. On some Sundays, Riley visited his mom with Toby whenever he was around for a family dinner, but they fought most of the time. Riley's mother was a very tough woman and stubborn too, so she and Riley didn't always see eye to eye. The apartment where his mother stayed was of poor design, and Riley's heart hurt every time. " Don't worry, mom. We'll get you out of this place soon. " Riley didn't know she had spoken out loud. They were at the dining table enjoying her meal. Her mother met her statement with laughter. " And how do you plan on doing that? Do you have magic now? " She shook her head and muttered something to herself. "Living with that fool for a husband will never get you anywhere as you spend all your money on him!" Riley sighed. She glanced at Toby, and he stuffed his mouth with potatoes and looked away. "Mother, Henry and I are getting a divorce." She announced. Her mother waited for her to add that she was the one filing the divorce. A glimpse of relief rested in the woman's eyes. "I see you're gaining a little of your senses back, huh?" Was her reply. Toby didn't like the silence that now filled the air, so he began with one of his not-so-funny jokes. " Hey, do you know how the barber won a race? He knew a shortcut. Ha! Get it?" Neither of them made as little as a smirk of a reaction, but Toby went on anyway. Riley's phone rang, and she saw it was Henry calling. With a frown on her face, she rose up and excused herself to answer it. Why was he calling? She picked up and waited. "My love, Riley, thank goodness you picked this time!" Henry said, "I know we have a misunderstanding, but hear me out. I've been trying to call you since Friday, but you wouldn't pick up! Nor respond to any of my text messages." Riley rolled her eyes. He did send messages and left calls, but she did not respond on purpose. Even now, she didn't know what possessed her to take his call. "What do you want, Henry?" Riley said in a cool tone. Henry cleared his throat. " The truth is that, I am stranded! I don't know where I am, so I was wondering if they are yet to pay your salary. Or maybe you can lend me from your savings. I will return it, I swear! I went for a job interview and I don't know where I am. " A job interview? On a Sunday evening? Henry didn't work. He stayed at home. Or wasted time in clubs, either way, spending his mother's money and Riley's. " Are you still there? My card isn't working, so could you lend me like $1500 dollars? I know you must want to use your savings for something important, but I will return them! " Henry said. Riley could hear music playing underneath his voice. This man was at a club, probably with Lola, and he needed his atm again. Riley. She decided to play on. " I am so sorry to hear it. Please be safe. Let me get back to you. I will send the money now. Just wait a little while." She didn't have the strength to yell trash at Henry, so she would not waste her energy on him. She hung up and turned on airplane mode. She double-checked all of her accounts and made sure Henry didn't have access to any of them, then she had also gotten a new phone. Now she would get a new apartment and truly cut him off from her life. The next day, Riley tried on her best outfit, but even that was not as glamorous as she would have wanted. Still, she was a pretty woman with lovely curves and beautiful skin. She decided to work with that. Her long hair was styled in a bun, and she woke up early enough so she was not late on her first day at work. Riley had already called her lawyer to issue the divorce to Henry, and had not responded to any of his calls or texts since her phone had been in airplane mode. Everything is going according to plan now. People complimented her on her simple but neat outfit and how lovely she looked. "Isn't that Riley from the sales department? Wow, she's so gorgeous today." Said a colleague as Riley waited by the reception. Another one pointed at her and smiled. Two men that were certainly above her status waved and greeted her good morning. It was as if she was now visible! Nobody knew who she was before. In fact, she was some lame married woman who had not only a poor sense of fashion, but was helpless as well. She had never really put in much work on her outfit, as she was always so busy running around working. Now, she was getting her paperwork ready as she would submit it to the human resources team to verify her promotion and direct her to her new office. "Riley, hold on! Stop right now. " Henry yelled out, running from hoards of security that were chasing behind. Riley's eyes widened with shock upon seeing him there! How? What was he looking for? Meanwhile, people were greeting the CEO, Richard Parker, as he stepped inside. Dan, his secretary, was with him as well. Riley didn't notice all this while. Her attention was seriously fixed on Henry, causing a scene now. "Do you know this annoying man, ma'am?" One of the security said as they approached Riley. Henry cowered behind her, yelling at the guards to leave. It was so annoying but Riley found the strength to remain calm. " Yes, I know him. I'm sorry for this. " Riley apologized, and they flashed Henry a wicked glance before turning to leave. Riley snapped, revealing murderous eyes to Henry as he came forward to meet her gaze. She was always so submissive to her husband before that with the anger flashing in her eyes, Henry couldn't help but wonder what had made her change like that. "Honey, I made a mistake. Yes. But I'm owning up to my sins, am I not? You promised to send me the money yesterday but left me hanging! I am in debt now because of you. Plus, I got an email from the lawyer regarding the divorce. Are you still pushing forward with that? Can't you just forgive me?" Henry pouted. He still thought he had a chance in her life, that Riley would never have the courage to leave. "You're so heartless!" He cried out when Riley turned and was about to leave. Riley was fuming with rage by now. Suddenly, she caught the sight of Richard Parker in front of her along with other staff, and she quickly stood up to greet him. Everything she had to say about Henry's behavior vanished at once. "G--good morning sir!" She said instantly. Richard was a tall young handsome man with a certain strictness. Each time you caught a glimpse of his face, you would think he was certainly mad at you for some reason with his intent piercing gaze. Richard frowned at Henry, eying the man from head to toe. So this was the man she ended up with? But, if he heard correctly, they were about to get divorced now? That was good news! "Miss Dawn? Is this man giving you a hard time?" It took a moment for Riley to know her last name was Dawn. She opened her mouth to talk but Henry cut her off. "Hey, Richard? From the account department? You went to Grayhills college, didn't you?" Henry asked. "Right. It's you! This rich kid who had a massive crush on Riley back then. That dude obsessed with--" Riley hushed him up with a slap across his cheeks. "Would you shut it, Henry!" Massive crush on her? Suddenly, flashes of her college life played in her mind. She took a closer look at Richard and saw that he had been the hottest guy on campus back then! Wait, the hottest guy on campus was crushing on her back then?
