The fact that she had agreed to be my assistant was a step forward, no matter how small. Maybe she thought this was just about work, but for me, it was more than that. This was my chance—to make things right, to show her that this marriage didn’t have to be a prison, and maybe, just maybe, to make her fall in love with me.
She stepped out of the car, and I followed, watching as she took in the grand estate, the sprawling gardens lit by soft golden lights.
