Chapter Seven – The First Spark of War Greymoor burned in the distance. From their perch above the ridge, Nyra watched the smoke rise like a warning. Not a full fire—just a distraction. Enough to empty the village and force the Inquisition to show its hand. Below, Kael paced. > “They’ve split their forces,” he said. “Two squads stayed behind to protect the archives. That’s where they’re keeping the relic.” > “And the girl?” Nyra asked. > “Still hidden. With Maelin’s scouts.” Nyra nodded, eyes scanning the terrain. She didn’t like this. It felt rushed. Loud. Reckless. And that wasn’t how fire won—it didn’t scream first. It simmered, then devoured. > “I go in alone,” she said. Kael turned sharply. “That’s not the plan.” > “Plans change.” > “You don’t get to command yet.” Nyra’s gaze cut into him. “I’m not asking for permission.” --- She moved through the village like smoke—silent, unseen. The square was abandoned, save for the occasional shout in the distance. Inquisitor banners flapped from windows. Their symbol—a white blade on red cloth—taunted her with every corner she turned. She found the archive near the center of town. Guarded, as Kael said. Two soldiers with ash-proof gear. Fire-resistant cloaks. Iron-tipped weapons. She stepped into the open anyway. > “Halt!” Nyra raised her hand—and flame spiraled from her fingers like a whip, wrapping around the first guard’s weapon and ripping it away. The second lunged. Nyra ducked, slammed her palm into his chest, and whispered. > “Burn.” He flew backward, body igniting in a silent blaze. The first guard fled. She walked into the archive like it belonged to her. --- Rows of old books. Shelves made of stone. It smelled like dust, secrets, and things no one wanted remembered. And at the center, floating above a pedestal— A crystal. Small. Faintly glowing. Inside it: swirling ember-red light. > “The Heart of Ash,” she whispered. Kael hadn’t told her the relic was a blood anchor—a piece of magic that responded only to full-blooded Ashmarked. She reached out. The moment her fingers brushed it, the crystal pulsed. And then the fire within spoke. Not in words. But in truth. --- Visions slammed into her. A throne made of obsidian and bone. A woman with fire in her veins and smoke in her eyes. A kingdom burned not for power, but for vengeance. And at the center— > Herself. --- Nyra staggered back. > She wasn’t just born of flame. She was the heir to the one who tried to erase the world. The visions stopped. And Kael stood in the doorway. > “You touched it,” he said quietly. > “You knew.” > “I suspected.” Nyra stepped back. “You used me.” Kael’s expression didn’t change. “I guided you. There’s a difference.” > “You sent me here to awaken something.” > “You are something,” he snapped. “Something they couldn’t kill. Something we need.” Nyra clenched her fists. > “You don’t need me. You need a weapon.” > “Same thing.” --- The torches in the archive flared. Lira appeared behind Kael, breathless. > “The soldiers are coming,” she said. “Lots of them.” Kael turned to her. “Go with Nyra. Now.” But Lira didn’t move. She looked at Nyra like she saw the fire too. > “You’re afraid of yourself,” the girl said softly. Nyra swallowed. > “So is he,” she replied. --- They ran. Nyra didn’t wait for Kael. She grabbed Lira’s hand, burst through the back wall of the archive in a cloud of shattered stone and ember. Soldiers saw them—but didn’t follow. Not after what they had just felt. --- Back at the ridge, Maelin waited. > “Did you get it?” Nyra held up the crystal. > “It showed me who I was.” Maelin studied her. “And?” > “It also showed me who I might become.” > “Good,” Maelin said. “Then you’re finally starting to understand.” Kael arrived last, bruised and silent. He didn’t speak to Nyra. Didn’t look at her. But she saw it now—clear as flame: > Their alliance had an end date. And it was coming soon. --- 🔥 End of Chapter Seven ---
