--- Chapter Six – Whispers Beneath the Flame The forest gave way to stone. After a full day of walking—winding through forgotten paths and unmarked trails—Kael stopped in front of what looked like a solid rock wall. > “We’re here,” he said. Lira clung to Nyra’s side, her eyes wide. She hadn’t spoken since the night of the fire. > “This is nothing,” Nyra said, glancing around. Kael smiled faintly. Then he lifted his hand—and flame slid from his fingers like ribbon, pressing into the stone. A shape appeared. A mark. The same spiral that now burned on Nyra’s wrist. The wall groaned… and opened. Inside: a hidden tunnel, narrow and torch-lit, carved into the belly of the mountain. The air smelled of ash and old secrets. --- They walked in silence. The deeper they went, the more the shadows began to whisper. Not with voices—but with presence. Nyra felt it in her ribs, like a second heartbeat that didn’t belong to her. Finally, the tunnel opened into a vast underground chamber. And they were not alone. Dozens of eyes turned toward them. Men and women in dark leathers, cloaks, and battle-worn expressions. Some wore marks on their skin—spirals, sigils, runes inked in red or burned into flesh. > “These are the Ashmarked,” Kael said. “Not all are full-blooded. Some carry just a trace. But all of them are loyal.” Nyra didn’t answer. She could feel it already—the tension in the room. Not fear. But recognition. They had heard of her. And now, they saw her. --- A tall woman stepped forward. Her hair was silver at the edges, though her face remained untouched by time. Her cloak bore the mark of three flames. > “So,” she said. “The Silent Flame finally speaks.” Kael bowed. “This is Maelin. Elder of the Ashmarked. Strategist. Oracle.” Maelin studied Nyra for a long moment. “You hid too long, girl.” > “I was surviving.” > “You were hiding.” Nyra’s jaw clenched. Maelin circled her slowly. “You think your fire is something to control. But it’s not a gift. It’s a warning.” Nyra stepped forward. “It’s both.” The chamber shifted. Even the torches seemed to burn a little higher. Maelin raised a brow—but didn’t argue. --- Later that night, Nyra stood alone in one of the carved alcoves, staring into a basin of glowing embers. Visions moved through them—blurred shapes, flashes of the future, or echoes of the past. A hand touched her shoulder. It was Lira. > “Do you trust them?” the girl asked. Nyra hesitated. “Not yet. But they know more than we do.” > “Kael scares me,” Lira whispered. Nyra looked down at her. “Why?” > “Because… he smiles when people burn.” --- Behind them, Maelin’s voice rang out across the chamber. > “The Inquisition marches toward Greymoor. We have three days before they arrive. After that—any Ashmarked caught above ground will be executed.” Kael stepped forward. “Then we don’t wait. We strike first.” Some cheered. Others murmured uneasily. Maelin looked to Nyra. > “You’ve seen what they can do. Will you fight with us?” Nyra met her gaze. “Only if we fight for the right reasons.” Maelin tilted her head. “And what reason do you serve?” > “Not revenge,” Nyra said quietly. “Not fear. But the girl who still thinks she’s a curse.” > “Then teach her she’s a weapon.” Nyra looked back at Lira—who now stood watching from the shadows, her eyes glowing softly. --- That night, Nyra didn’t sleep. She sat by the embers, listening to the whispers in the flame. They called her a name she didn’t yet understand. A name from the prophecy Maelin had half-spoken. > "The one who burns in silence will be the one who burns it all down." And for the first time, Nyra wondered— Was she really here to protect the world? Or to remake it? --- 🔥 End of Chapter Six ---
