Chapter 16: The Consequences of War

1119 Words
The Aftermath of a Scandal The fallout from Raegan’s scandal was swift and brutal. Within days, his company’s stock plummeted, business partners distanced themselves, and investors withdrew their support. The media was relentless, exposing more skeletons in his closet, including fraudulent business dealings and offshore accounts. Alodia watched it unfold from Jasper’s penthouse, her phone buzzing with news updates. She had finally won custody of her children, but the war wasn’t over—Raegan was a wounded animal, and that made him even more dangerous. Jasper sat beside her, scrolling through social media. “The world is tearing him apart.” Alodia exhaled. “He deserves it.” Jasper studied her, his expression unreadable. “Are you okay?” She nodded, but the truth was, she felt numb. This wasn’t just about winning custody—it was the end of a chapter in her life. Raegan had once been her husband, the father of her children. Now, he was a ruined man. Jasper took her hand, squeezing gently. “You don’t have to feel guilty for taking back your life.” She met his gaze. “I don’t. I just… I don’t know what comes next.” Jasper smirked. “A new beginning.” Before she could respond, her phone rang. It was Miranda. “Alodia, we have a problem.” Alodia’s stomach twisted. “What kind of problem?” Miranda’s voice was urgent. “Raegan’s gone missing.” --- A Desperate Man Alodia and Jasper arrived at Miranda’s office, tension thick in the air. Miranda gestured to the TV on the wall, where a news broadcast played. "Former business tycoon Raegan Rivera has disappeared after a series of criminal allegations. Authorities suspect he may have fled the country, but sources close to Rivera claim he is still in the city, plotting his next move." Alodia clenched her fists. “You think he’s coming after me?” Miranda crossed her arms. “I wouldn’t put it past him.” Jasper’s jaw tightened. “We need to increase security.” Miranda nodded. “I’ll make some calls, but Alodia—you need to be careful.” Alodia swallowed hard. She had won, but Raegan wasn’t the type to accept defeat. And that terrified her. --- A Ghost from the Past That night, Jasper insisted she stay at his penthouse with the children. He hired extra security, but a nagging fear still lingered in Alodia’s chest. She stood by the window, staring at the city lights, when Jasper wrapped his arms around her from behind. “You’re safe here,” he murmured. She leaned into him. “I hope so.” But as she looked down at the street below, a black car was parked outside. And she had a terrible feeling Raegan was inside. --- A Shadow in the Night Alodia’s breath hitched as she stared at the black car parked outside Jasper’s penthouse. Her grip tightened on the window frame. Jasper followed her gaze. “Do you recognize it?” She swallowed. “No… but I have a bad feeling.” Jasper immediately grabbed his phone and called his security team. “Check the black sedan outside. I want the plates traced. Now.” Alodia stepped back from the window, heart pounding. “What if it’s Raegan?” Jasper’s jaw clenched. “Then he’s stupider than I thought.” A moment later, Jasper’s head of security, Nolan, entered the room. “The car’s been sitting there for nearly an hour. Tinted windows. No movement.” Alodia shivered. “He’s watching.” Jasper’s voice was cold. “Not for long.” --- A Trap Set in Motion The next morning, Alodia took the children to school under heavy security. Jasper insisted on escorting her, despite her protests. “I’m not taking chances,” he said as they walked into the school gates. “Not with him lurking.” Alodia watched her children disappear into the school building, a bittersweet ache filling her chest. She had fought for them. Now she had to protect them. As they left, a familiar voice stopped her in her tracks. “Alodia.” She turned sharply—Raegan stood near a tree, wearing a dark coat and sunglasses, his hands in his pockets. Jasper immediately stepped between them. “What the hell do you want?” Raegan smirked. “Just a chat.” Alodia’s pulse spiked. “You lost, Raegan. What’s left to say?” His smirk faded. “You think you’ve won? You think you can take my children, destroy my name, and walk away?” His voice turned venomous. “This isn’t over, Alodia.” Jasper took a threatening step forward. “You come near her or the kids again, and I’ll make sure you regret it.” Raegan scoffed. “You think she’s yours now?” His gaze shifted to Alodia. “You’ll never be free of me. Never.” Jasper moved to grab him, but Raegan vanished into the crowd. Alodia felt her knees weaken. He wasn’t done. Not yet. --- Breaking Point That night, Alodia sat curled on Jasper’s couch, her arms wrapped around herself. Jasper knelt in front of her. “Talk to me.” She closed her eyes. “I just want this nightmare to end.” Jasper cupped her face gently. “I’ll end it for you.” She looked into his eyes, searching for reassurance. For safety. Jasper’s lips brushed against hers. Soft. Protective. She melted into him, seeking comfort, needing him. But as the kiss deepened, Jasper suddenly pulled back, breathing heavily. “Alodia…” His voice was raw. “I don’t want to rush this. Not when you’re scared.” She touched his face. “I don’t want to feel scared. I want to feel something else.” Jasper’s resolve crumbled as she pulled him down to her, needing his warmth, his strength. And in that moment, nothing else mattered. Not Raegan. Not the past. Only them. --- The Final Blow The next day, Miranda called with shocking news. “Raegan was arrested early this morning at the airport.” Alodia gasped. “What?” “He was trying to flee the country with a fake passport.” Jasper laughed darkly. “Idiot.” Miranda sighed. “He’s facing multiple charges now. Fraud. Bribery. The judge has already denied bail.” Alodia’s hands trembled. “So… it’s over?” Miranda hesitated, then softened. “Yes, Alodia. It’s over.” Alodia exhaled slowly, the weight on her chest finally lifting. She turned to Jasper, emotions overwhelming her. “I can’t believe it.” Jasper smiled, tucking her hair behind her ear. “Believe it.” She had won. And this time, Raegan was truly gone.
