Chapter 17: Rebuilding What Was Broken

980 Words
A New Dawn The morning after Raegan’s arrest, the world felt different—lighter. Alodia stood by the balcony of Jasper’s penthouse, sipping her coffee as the golden sunrise bathed the city in warmth. For the first time in years, she wasn’t afraid. Jasper stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. “You’re quiet,” he murmured against her hair. She smiled softly, leaning into his embrace. “I don’t know what to do with this… freedom.” He kissed her temple. “Then take your time. No one’s rushing you.” She turned to face him, her fingers trailing over his chest. “But what now, Jasper? Where do we go from here?” Jasper studied her intently. “Wherever you want.” Her heart ached at the sincerity in his voice. He had given her a safe haven, protected her when she had nowhere to turn. And she had fallen for him completely. But was she ready for this? Before she could answer, her phone buzzed. Miranda. Alodia sighed. “Reality calls.” Jasper chuckled, stepping back as she answered. “Good morning to you, too,” Alodia greeted. Miranda snorted. “Girl, I let you have your victory moment, but now it’s time to get back to business.” Alodia raised an eyebrow. “Business?” Miranda’s tone turned serious. “With Raegan out of the picture, his company is crumbling. His former board members want to meet with you. They… want you to take over.” Alodia nearly dropped her coffee. “What?” --- An Unexpected Offer Two hours later, Alodia walked into a sleek conference room overlooking the city skyline. Seated around the long table were five of Raegan’s most influential board members. An older man, Mr. Hastings, spoke first. “Ms. Rivera, thank you for meeting us on such short notice.” Alodia nodded cautiously. “I wasn’t expecting this meeting at all.” Hastings exchanged glances with the others before continuing. “Raegan’s legal troubles have left the company in a precarious position. Investors are pulling out. We need a new leader to stabilize things.” Alodia frowned. “And you think that’s me?” A woman at the table, Mrs. Linton, leaned forward. “You were with Raegan from the beginning. You know this company.” Alodia clenched her fists. “I was just his wife.” Linton smiled knowingly. “No, you were his strategist. Many of our best deals happened because of you, even if Raegan took the credit.” Alodia swallowed. That was true. She had been the one behind countless successful business negotiations, the silent force in Raegan’s empire. Hastings sighed. “We need someone to repair the damage and restore confidence. And we believe you’re the only one who can.” Alodia’s mind raced. This company was once her prison. Could it now be her redemption? She took a deep breath. “I need time to think.” Hastings nodded. “Of course. But don’t take too long. We won’t survive without a leader.” As Alodia walked out of the meeting, her heart pounded with possibilities. Was this her second chance? And if she took it, what would it mean for her and Jasper? --- A Crossroad of Choices The ride back to Jasper’s penthouse was silent, but Alodia’s mind was anything but. The offer from Raegan’s board kept replaying in her head, each possibility tugging her in different directions. When the elevator doors slid open, Jasper was already waiting for her in the living room. “You’re tense.” He studied her carefully as she set her purse down. “What happened?” Alodia exhaled sharply. “They want me to take over Raegan’s company.” Jasper raised an eyebrow. “And?” “And I don’t know what to do,” she admitted. “That company was built on corruption. It’s what nearly ruined me. But… it’s also something I helped create.” Jasper crossed his arms. “Do you want it?” Alodia hesitated. “I want a fresh start. But maybe this is my way of fixing what was broken.” Jasper walked up to her, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “You don’t owe them anything, Alodia. But if you think you can turn it into something good, then do it—for yourself, not for them.” She looked up at him, searching his eyes. “What if it changes everything? What if it pulls me away from this—” She gestured between them. Jasper’s gaze darkened. “Nothing will take you away from me.” His voice was firm, possessive. And it sent a shiver down her spine. She swallowed hard. “I need to be sure.” Jasper leaned in, his lips barely brushing hers. “Then let me show you.” --- A Moment of Certainty Jasper lifted her off her feet effortlessly, carrying her into the bedroom. His lips claimed hers with undeniable hunger, as if trying to erase any lingering doubts. “Stay,” he murmured between kisses, trailing down her neck. “Stay with me.” Alodia’s hands tangled in his hair as she whispered, “Always.” And as the night deepened, she knew—this was where she belonged. No matter what decision she made, Jasper was her home. --- The Decision The next morning, Alodia stood before the full-length mirror, adjusting her blazer. She had made her choice. Jasper watched from the bed, his arm lazily draped behind his head. “You look powerful.” She smirked. “I feel powerful.” Walking over to him, she kissed him deeply. “Whatever happens next, I’m not running anymore.” Jasper’s eyes shone with pride. “That’s my girl.” And with that, she walked out the door—ready to take back her life.
