The First Strike
Alodia sat in Miranda Blake’s office, her hands clenched together so tightly her knuckles turned white. Across from her, Miranda flipped through the case file with sharp, calculating eyes.
“You do realize this won’t be easy,” Miranda said, closing the folder. “Raegan has a strong case. You’ve been having an affair for years. Judges don’t look kindly on that.”
Alodia’s throat tightened. “I know.”
Miranda tapped a pen against the desk. “What’s worse is that you were sneaking around while still playing happy family. That paints you as deceitful, which Raegan will use against you.”
Alodia looked down, guilt gnawing at her.
Jasper, who sat beside her, reached for her hand. “She’s a good mother, Miranda.”
Miranda rolled her eyes. “I don’t doubt that. But in family court, perception matters more than truth.”
Alodia swallowed hard. “Then how do we fight this?”
Miranda leaned back, tapping her chin. “First, we need to shift the narrative. Instead of focusing on the affair, we focus on Raegan.”
Alodia’s brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”
Miranda smirked. “We highlight his weaknesses. Has he ever worked late and missed important moments? Has he ever lost his temper around the kids?”
Alodia hesitated. “He’s not a bad father.”
“Then we make him seem less perfect,” Miranda said smoothly. “No parent is flawless, and we only need to show that you’re just as capable—if not more so.”
Alodia took a shaky breath.
Miranda continued, her voice crisp. “We’ll also bring in character witnesses. Your best friend, your family, anyone who can vouch for your devotion as a mother.”
Alodia nodded slowly.
Miranda flipped open another folder. “And finally, we prepare for the worst. Raegan will try to humiliate you. He might even put your relationship with Jasper on trial.”
Jasper’s jaw clenched. “I won’t let that happen.”
Miranda arched an eyebrow. “Oh? And how do you plan to stop it?”
Jasper exhaled. “I’ll go public about my divorce. The media already suspects my marriage was a sham. If I confirm it now, it’ll take some of the heat off Alodia.”
Miranda tilted her head. “That’s actually… not a terrible idea.”
Alodia stared at him. “Are you sure?”
Jasper’s eyes softened. “I should have done it years ago.”
Miranda smirked. “Then let’s get started. Because once we file this, the real war begins.”

Raegan Fights Back
A week later, Alodia received a legal notice from Raegan’s lawyer.
He was officially filing for full custody.
Her stomach twisted as she sat in Miranda’s office, reading through the document.
“He’s playing hardball,” Miranda muttered, flipping through the papers.
Alodia’s hands trembled. “He’s using my affair as the main reason, isn’t he?”
Miranda nodded. “And he’s claiming that you created an unstable environment for the kids by sneaking around.”
Alodia swallowed hard.
Jasper, who had been pacing the office, finally spoke. “There has to be a way to counter this.”
Miranda smirked. “There is. We strike first.”
Alodia frowned. “What do you mean?”
Miranda slid a file across the desk. “We file a counter-petition, claiming that Raegan’s demanding work schedule has made you the primary caretaker all these years.”
Alodia blinked. “But… that’s true.”
“Exactly,” Miranda said. “We use the truth to our advantage. If Raegan has been relying on you to raise the kids while he worked, then we argue that nothing should change now.”
Jasper’s expression was unreadable. “And if that’s not enough?”
Miranda’s smirk widened. “Then we hit him where it hurts.”
Alodia’s stomach tightened. “What does that mean?”
Miranda leaned forward, her green eyes glinting.
“We expose his own secrets.”

The Secret Weapon
Alodia’s breath hitched. “Raegan doesn’t have secrets.”
Miranda chuckled. “Oh, sweetie. Everyone has secrets.”
Jasper narrowed his eyes. “Do you know something?”
Miranda shrugged. “I did some digging.” She pulled out a manila folder. “Turns out, Raegan has been making some… questionable financial decisions.”
Alodia stiffened. “What?”
Miranda opened the folder, revealing bank statements, business dealings, and suspicious transactions.
Jasper picked up one of the papers. “These are large sums.”
Miranda smirked. “Exactly. He’s been investing in high-risk ventures. If we present this in court, we can argue that he’s financially unstable.”
Alodia’s head spun. “I… I never knew.”
Miranda crossed her arms. “And that’s the point. He’s been keeping secrets too. He’s not as perfect as he wants the court to believe.”
Alodia hesitated. “But… do we really want to destroy him like this?”
Miranda’s expression softened for the first time. “This isn’t about destroying him, Alodia. This is about protecting your children.”
Alodia swallowed.
Then she exhaled sharply. “Okay. Let’s do it.”
Jasper squeezed her hand, his silent support grounding her.
Miranda’s smirk returned. “Good. Because once we use this… Raegan won’t know what hit him.”

Raegan’s Counterattack
The tension in the courtroom was suffocating. Alodia sat beside Miranda at the long wooden table, her fingers digging into her lap. Across from her, Raegan sat rigidly in his chair, his lawyer whispering something in his ear.
The judge, a stern-looking woman in her fifties, cleared her throat. “Let’s begin.”
Raegan’s lawyer stood. “Your Honor, my client seeks full custody of the children due to the mother’s extramarital affair, which created an unstable home environment. We will present evidence proving that she engaged in this relationship while still cohabiting with my client, deceiving both him and their children.”
Alodia’s stomach twisted.
Miranda, ever composed, stood. “Your Honor, we object to the idea that an affair alone determines parental capability. Infidelity does not equate to poor parenting.”
The judge nodded. “Proceed.”
Raegan’s lawyer smirked. “We have witnesses who can confirm that Ms. Rivera neglected her children while engaging in her relationship with Mr. Blake.”
Alodia’s breath hitched.
The lawyer turned. “Call Mrs. Veronica Cruz to the stand.”
Alodia stiffened. Veronica had been their former nanny.
As Veronica walked up to the witness stand, Alodia’s pulse pounded.
“Mrs. Cruz,” Raegan’s lawyer began, “you worked for the Rivera family, correct?”
“Yes,” Veronica answered.
“Did you ever witness Ms. Rivera leaving the children alone to meet with Mr. Blake?”
Veronica hesitated.
Alodia’s hands clenched into fists.
Then Veronica spoke.
“There were times she left,” she admitted. “But the children were never alone. I was always there to care for them.”
Raegan’s lawyer frowned. “And were there times the children noticed their mother’s absence?”
Veronica hesitated again. “Yes. But—”
“Thank you,” the lawyer cut in. “No further questions.”
Alodia swallowed hard as Miranda stood.
“Mrs. Cruz,” Miranda said smoothly, “would you say Ms. Rivera is a loving mother?”
Veronica nodded. “Absolutely.”
“Did she ever fail to provide for her children?”
“No.”
“Did she ensure they had everything they needed?”
“Yes.”
Miranda smiled. “So, despite what my opponent suggests, would you agree that Ms. Rivera remained a devoted parent?”
Veronica hesitated, then nodded. “Yes.”
Miranda turned to the judge. “No further questions.”
Alodia let out a shaky breath.
It wasn’t perfect, but at least Veronica hadn’t completely turned against her.

Jasper’s Confession
“Call Jasper Blake to the stand.”
Alodia’s heart lurched.
Jasper stood and walked confidently to the witness stand, his striking features unreadable.
Raegan’s lawyer wasted no time. “Mr. Blake, you are a married man, correct?”
Jasper’s jaw tightened. “Not anymore. My divorce is finalized.”
A murmur ran through the courtroom.
The lawyer smirked. “Yet, for three years, you engaged in an affair with Ms. Rivera while still legally married.”
Jasper didn’t flinch. “Yes.”
The lawyer paced slowly. “Would you say that your relationship contributed to the deterioration of Ms. Rivera’s marriage?”
Jasper exhaled. “I won’t deny that our relationship was complicated. But Alodia and Raegan’s marriage was already falling apart long before me.”
Raegan’s lawyer raised an eyebrow. “Convenient explanation. Tell me, Mr. Blake, do you love Ms. Rivera?”
Alodia’s breath caught.
Jasper’s eyes met hers across the room.
“Yes,” he said simply.
A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom.
Alodia’s chest tightened.
Raegan’s lawyer smirked, as if Jasper had just handed them a victory. “So, you admit that you were a distraction from her responsibilities as a mother?”
Jasper’s expression darkened. “Absolutely not.”
The lawyer frowned.
Jasper continued, his voice firm. “Alodia has always put her children first. Even when we were together, she never neglected them. She sacrificed her happiness for them.”
Alodia felt tears prick her eyes.
Miranda leaned back, arms crossed. “No further questions.”
Raegan’s lawyer looked frustrated.
The judge glanced at the clock. “We’ll reconvene tomorrow for further witness testimonies.”
With that, court was adjourned.

A Dangerous Proposition
That night, Alodia sat in Jasper’s penthouse, staring out at the city lights.
The trial had drained her.
Jasper walked up behind her, resting his hands on her shoulders. “You okay?”
She exhaled. “I don’t know.”
Jasper turned her to face him, his blue eyes intense. “Miranda will handle this.”
Alodia bit her lip. “And if she doesn’t?”
Jasper hesitated. Then he took a deep breath. “Then we do something else.”
She frowned. “Like what?”
Jasper hesitated. Then, in a quiet, determined voice, he said:
“We get married.”
Alodia’s heart stopped.
“What?”
Jasper held her hands tightly. “If we get married, it’ll show the court that your relationship isn’t just some reckless affair. It’s serious. Stable.”
Alodia’s head spun.
This was insane.
“Jasper…” She struggled to find words. “We can’t just—”
“We can,” he interrupted gently. “If it means keeping your kids, wouldn’t you do anything?”
Her stomach twisted.
Would she?
Jasper cupped her face. “I love you, Alodia. And I want to be with you. This isn’t just about the case. It’s about us.”
Alodia’s breath hitched.
Could she really do this?
Then she thought about Raegan’s threats.
The way he wanted to take her children away.
And suddenly…
She had her answer.
She looked up at Jasper, her heart pounding.
“Okay,” she whispered.
Jasper’s eyes softened. “Okay?”
She nodded. “Let’s do it.”
Jasper pulled her into a deep kiss.
And for the first time in weeks…
Hope flickered in her chest.
This wasn’t just about love anymore.
It was about fighting for her future.
