Chapter 19: The Storm Before the Calm

993 Words
A Brewing War Alodia arrived at the office to find Miranda waiting for her with a stack of files. Her assistant’s expression was tense, and that was never a good sign. “Morning,” Alodia greeted, taking a sip of her coffee. “Please tell me that look isn’t because of something catastrophic.” Miranda sighed. “I’d love to, but…” She handed over a folder. “The board received a letter this morning—from Raegan’s legal team.” Alodia’s stomach clenched. She flipped open the file and scanned the document. Appeal for early release. Her grip on the paper tightened. “This can’t be real.” Miranda hesitated. “It is. And according to some sources, Raegan’s pulling strings from the inside. He’s trying to make a deal.” Alodia closed her eyes briefly. She had expected resistance, but this? This was war. She straightened, her voice cool and sharp. “Schedule a meeting with the board. I want a full breakdown of where we stand legally. And get Hastings on the phone—I need to know if this appeal has any chance of success.” Miranda nodded and rushed out, leaving Alodia staring at the city skyline. If Raegan thought he could take back control, he was sorely mistaken. --- Jasper’s Warning That evening, Alodia met Jasper at an exclusive restaurant—one of their usual discreet places. He was already seated in a private booth, a glass of whiskey in hand. The moment she slid into the seat across from him, his sharp gaze met hers. “You’re tense.” She let out a humorless laugh. “Raegan’s trying to get out early.” Jasper’s expression darkened. He set his glass down with a soft thud. “I should’ve expected this. He doesn’t know when to stay buried.” Alodia sighed. “He’s using every connection he has left. If the court even considers this appeal, he could be out in months.” Jasper leaned forward, his voice low and dangerous. “He’s not getting near you. I don’t care what it takes.” A shiver ran down her spine at the undeniable protectiveness in his voice. Alodia reached across the table, taking his hand. “I won’t let him destroy what I’ve built, Jasper. I’ve worked too hard for this.” His fingers tightened around hers. “And I won’t let him take you away from me.” Their eyes locked, the intensity between them pulsing like a live wire. No matter what came next, they were in this together. --- A Dangerous Proposition The tension between Alodia and Jasper lingered as they finished their meal. Even with the warmth of his touch and the unwavering certainty in his voice, the reality of Raegan’s influence loomed over them. Jasper leaned back, his jaw set. “We need to stop him before he even gets close to an early release.” Alodia sighed, stirring her untouched wine. “And how do we do that? He still has people loyal to him. People who would rather see me fail than watch me succeed in his place.” Jasper’s eyes darkened. “Then we make sure those people have no power left.” Alodia frowned. “Jasper…” He reached into his pocket and slid a folded document across the table. She hesitated before unfolding it, her eyes scanning the contents. It was a confidential file—a list of Raegan’s remaining connections, offshore accounts, and under-the-table dealings that had somehow escaped exposure during his trial. Her breath caught. “How did you get this?” Jasper’s lips curled into a smirk. “I have my ways.” Alodia swallowed, her mind racing. This could be the key to keeping Raegan behind bars. She looked up at him, her voice barely a whisper. “Are you sure about this?” Jasper’s expression turned serious. “I will do whatever it takes to protect you.” A lump formed in her throat. No one—not even Raegan—had ever fought for her like this. She reached across the table and squeezed his hand. “Then let’s end this.” --- The Battle Begins The next morning, Alodia arrived at the office early. Miranda was already there, waiting with fresh coffee and a knowing look. “Tell me you didn’t spend all night worrying about this,” Miranda said, handing her the cup. Alodia sighed. “Not worrying. Planning.” She pulled out Jasper’s file and placed it on her desk. Miranda’s brows shot up as she skimmed through the pages. “Holy… where did you get this?” “Jasper,” Alodia admitted. “And before you ask, I don’t want to know how he got it.” Miranda let out a low whistle. “If this gets into the right hands, Raegan’s appeal won’t just be denied—he could get more years added to his sentence.” “That’s the goal,” Alodia said firmly. Miranda grinned. “Then let’s make sure this lands exactly where it needs to.” Alodia watched as her assistant got to work, and for the first time in weeks, she felt something close to relief. Raegan wanted a war? She would win it. --- A Love That Wouldn’t Break That night, Alodia returned to Jasper’s penthouse. She barely had time to speak before he pulled her into his arms, kissing her slow and deep. She melted against him, the stress of the day dissolving in his embrace. “You did good today,” Jasper murmured against her lips. She smiled, resting her forehead against his. “So did you.” Jasper’s hands roamed down her back, pulling her flush against him. “Let me take care of you tonight.” Alodia shivered at the promise in his voice. And as he carried her to the bedroom, she knew—no matter what storm came next, they would face it together.
