Chapter 20: Shadows of the Past

The Fallout Begins Alodia sat at the head of the long boardroom table, her fingers laced together as she listened to her legal team break down the latest developments. The confidential file Jasper had given her had been delivered to the authorities, and the fallout had begun. "Raegan’s appeal is already under heavy scrutiny," Hastings, her top legal advisor, reported. "The additional evidence we've provided paints a much darker picture of his activities. His legal team is struggling to fight back, but—" He hesitated. Alodia narrowed her eyes. "But what?" Hastings sighed. "Raegan still has connections within the justice system. There's a possibility that some of his allies will attempt to suppress this evidence before it reaches the right hands." A sharp pang of frustration ran through her. Raegan’s influence ran deep—even from behind bars, he was still pulling strings. "We can't let that happen," Alodia said firmly. "What do we need to do to ensure this information reaches the highest level?" Hastings hesitated before speaking carefully. "We need public exposure. If this information goes viral, no one will be able to bury it." Alodia exhaled sharply. Public exposure meant risk—for her, for the company, for Jasper. But if it was the only way to keep Raegan locked away… "Do it," she said. The room fell into silence for a beat before Miranda spoke up, her voice laced with determination. "I'll reach out to media contacts and trusted sources. If we play this right, Raegan won't have a single ally left." Alodia met her assistant's gaze and nodded. "Make it happen." She wasn’t just fighting for herself anymore. She was fighting for her future. --- The Danger Lurking in the Dark That night, Jasper arrived at her penthouse, his expression grim. "You sure you want to go through with this?" he asked as he poured himself a drink. Alodia leaned against the counter, watching him. "We don’t have a choice. If we don’t expose him, he'll get out. And if he gets out…" Jasper clenched his jaw, taking a slow sip of his whiskey. "Then he comes for you." A chill ran down her spine. She didn’t want to admit it out loud, but she knew Jasper was right. If Raegan got free, he wouldn’t just stop at taking back the company. He would come for revenge. Jasper set his glass down and crossed the space between them, cupping her face with both hands. His touch was firm, steadying. "I won't let that happen," he murmured. "Do you hear me, Alodia?" She nodded, swallowing past the lump in her throat. "I know." Jasper’s eyes darkened. "I don’t care what it takes—I will protect you. Even if I have to destroy every single person backing him." A shiver ran through her at the intensity in his voice. He meant it. And for the first time since this war with Raegan had begun, she felt safe. --- A Storm Unleashed The next morning, Alodia walked into the office, her phone buzzing with endless notifications. Miranda met her at the door, her face alight with triumph. “It’s everywhere,” Miranda said, thrusting a tablet into Alodia’s hands. Alodia scanned the headlines: BUSINESS TYCOON RADEGAN SANDOVAL’S DARK SECRETS UNCOVERED EXCLUSIVE: THE SHOCKING CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE OF A FALLEN MOGUL NEW EVIDENCE MAY KEEP SANDOVAL BEHIND BARS FOR LIFE Her pulse pounded. They did it. They actually did it. She looked up at Miranda. “Any response from Raegan’s team?” Miranda smirked. “They’re scrambling. His lawyers just released a vague statement about ‘misleading allegations.’ It’s pathetic.” A slow, satisfied smile curled on Alodia’s lips. “Good. Keep monitoring the fallout.” As she stepped into her office, she finally let herself breathe. Raegan’s empire was crumbling. --- The Enemy’s Last Move Hours later, Alodia was in the middle of reviewing statements when Miranda rushed in, her face pale. “We have a problem.” Alodia stiffened. “What is it?” Miranda handed her a phone. “Raegan’s lawyers just announced he’s been granted a court hearing… in three days.” Alodia’s stomach dropped. “That’s impossible. The evidence should have delayed this for months.” Miranda shook her head. “He pulled strings again.” Anger flared in Alodia’s chest. How was he still winning battles when he was supposed to be losing the war? She clenched her fists. “If the court grants his appeal, all of this was for nothing.” Miranda exhaled. “We need to act fast.” Alodia grabbed her phone and dialed Jasper. He answered on the first ring. “Jasper,” she said, voice tight. “Raegan has a court hearing in three days.” Silence. Then— “He won’t make it to that hearing,” Jasper said darkly. Alodia’s breath hitched. “What are you going to do?” A long pause. Then Jasper’s voice, low and deadly— “Whatever I have to.” --- A Dangerous Love That night, Alodia met Jasper at his penthouse. The moment she stepped inside, he was there—pulling her against him, his hands gripping her waist. “Tell me you trust me,” Jasper murmured against her skin. Alodia shivered. “I do.” Jasper lifted her chin, his gaze burning into hers. “Then let me handle this.” A flicker of fear mixed with desire curled inside her. Jasper wasn’t just an actor. He was a man who got things done. And right now, he was willing to cross any line for her. She cupped his face. “Just… come back to me, okay?” His eyes softened, but the promise in them was unshakable. “Always.” Then his lips crashed against hers, sealing their fate. And as the city lights flickered beyond the glass walls, Alodia knew—by the time the sun rose, everything would change.
