CHAPTER 1
Isabella Hawthorne stood in front of the massive, glass windows of the Hawthorne mansion, gazing out at the sprawling estate below her. The golden rays of the morning sun reflected off the marble floors, illuminating the grand chandelier that hung above her. The house was a masterpiece— a symbol of wealth, power, and lineage. Everything about Isabella screamed privilege. From the tailored designer dresses to the flawless manicure, her life was one of endless luxury, every need and want catered to by her family’s vast fortune. But as she stood there, an almost bored expression on her face, she felt the weight of her inheritance. The pressure to uphold her family's name, to maintain the legacy of the Hawthornes, weighed heavily on her slender shoulders. Still, she’d long learned how to wear it like a crown. She was the Queen of Hawthorne Academy, the exclusive school where only the rich, powerful, and influential could afford to send their children. Isabella’s father, Victor Hawthorne, was one of the wealthiest men in the country. His empire spanned across industries—real estate, tech, fashion— you name it, the Hawthorne name was attached to it. Her mother, Elena, was equally as influential, a former model turned business mogul who had built her own empire in the beauty industry. Isabella had never known a life without servants, without imported cars, without the finest education. As a child, she was taught that her name alone could open doors— and it did. People bowed to her family, they fawned over her, and the world turned a blind eye to any of her wrongdoings. Her parents had always told her, “Don’t worry about what others think, darling. You are superior by birth.” She grew up with the unwavering belief that no one was her equal— that her worth was inherent in her bloodline, in the opulent life she was born into. But today, as she prepared to head off to school, she felt a familiar twinge of annoyance. The car had barely started moving when she glanced at her reflection in the tinted window. Her glossy hair, perfect makeup, and pristine uniform— everything about her was flawless. Yet, the feeling of entitlement and superiority gnawed at her, a constant companion. It was only a few weeks before school started, and the thought of sharing a campus with those lesser than her already irritated her. She couldn’t wait to get there— to remind everyone who was in charge. Across town, Leo Martinez woke up to the sound of his alarm blaring from a worn-out clock. It was barely six in the morning, but the day had already begun. His small room, tucked away in the back of his family’s modest apartment, was filled with the faint smell of fresh laundry and the distant hum of the city. Leo rolled out of bed, his feet landing on the cold, hardwood floor. He stretched, his body sore from working late the previous night at a local diner to help pay the bills. Leo’s family was far from wealthy. They lived in a cramped apartment on the outskirts of the city, barely making ends meet. His mother, Maria, worked long hours as a nurse, and his father, Carlos, worked as a mechanic in a nearby garage. They were kind, hardworking people, but the harsh reality of their lives was that they couldn’t afford luxuries. Leo had never been to a vacation resort or dined at a five-star restaurant— his family’s concept of luxury was a decent meal on the table and a roof over their heads. Despite his family’s financial struggles, Leo had always been determined to make something of himself. He excelled at school, driven by the hope that his hard work would eventually get him out of the cycle of poverty. He studied late into the night, took on odd jobs to support his family, and never complained. His dedication and perseverance had finally paid off when he received the letter that would change his life. 5 Hawthorne Academy. A scholarship. The opportunity of a lifetime. He couldn’t believe it. The prestigious school was known for being impossible to get into, and for someone from his background, it felt like a dream. He had worked so hard, and now, at the age of seventeen, he was going to be one of the few students to receive the education that could change his future forever. But that didn’t mean he was excited to leave his family behind. Leo had always been the kind of person who cared about others, and the thought of being in a place so far removed from his humble roots made him uneasy. Hawthorne Academy was an elite institution, a school filled with kids who were born into wealth, power, and privilege— the complete opposite of everything Leo had ever known. His mother had encouraged him to go, saying, “This is your chance, Leo. Don’t let it slip away.” His father had been less enthusiastic. “You don’t belong with those rich kids,” he had muttered, but Leo knew deep down that this scholarship was more than just an education. It was a chance to prove to everyone— to himself, most of all— that he was worthy of more than the life he had been born into. On his first day at Hawthorne, Leo felt out of place the moment he stepped onto the campus. The sprawling grounds, the manicured lawns, the tall, intimidating gates—it was all so different from the cramped apartment buildings and crowded streets he was used to. The students who walked past him barely even glanced in his direction. Most of them had their noses in the air, already in their own cliques, their heads filled with thoughts of shopping sprees, weekend getaways, and designer clothes. Among them was Isabella Hawthorne. The moment Leo saw her, he knew exactly who she was— the girl everyone in the school talked about. Tall, elegant, and undeniably beautiful, Isabella walked with a confidence that could only come from knowing she was untouchable. Her glossy, raven-black hair cascaded around her shoulders, her designer handbag swinging effortlessly by her side. Her eyes, sharp and calculating, scanned the crowd like a queen assessing her kingdom. Leo’s first encounter with her happened in the hallway, where he accidentally bumped into her. She had been surrounded by her group of friends, all of them laughing at something, when Leo’s elbow grazed her arm. She stopped in her tracks, her sharp gaze narrowing as she turned to him. “Watch where you’re going,” she snapped, her voice icy and laced with disdain. Leo, caught off guard by her attitude, simply stood there for a moment before stammering, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—” “Of course, you didn’t. People like you never do,” Isabella interrupted, her tone dripping with superiority. “You really think you belong here, don’t you? You, with your scruffy clothes and that pathetic scholarship?” Her words hit Leo like a slap in the face. He had already expected the snobbery, but the venom in her voice stung deeper than he had anticipated. His jaw clenched, but he refused to back down. “I don’t need your approval,” he said quietly, before turning to leave, not willing to get caught up in whatever twisted game she wanted to play. As he walked away, Isabella’s laugh echoed in his ears. It was mocking, cruel, and it stayed with him long after he left the hallway. He had no idea then, but that first encounter would be the start of a rivalry that would change everything. Isabella had met someone who didn’t worship her, someone who saw through her facade of perfection. And Leo had met someone who made him question everything— someone who would challenge him in ways he never saw coming. They were enemies, two worlds colliding with the force of a hurricane, and neither of them was ready for what lay ahead. ---
