CHAPTER3

In a few months, Samantha was already used to the affairs of the company but she wasn’t like her dad. She always made sure things went her way. If she asks for a cup of coffee and gets a cup of tea, there would be real trouble. The staffs kept laying complaints until Martins Reynold, called her to the office. Samantha stood in front of Martins office and adjusting her well ironed fitted skirt and blouse. Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open. “Good day father.” She said, walking straight to the chair on the other side of the table. “Good day princess, please sit, we have important things to discuss right away.” He said in a calm tone. “Oh dad, you always have something to say, what’s it this time?” She said as she leaned her arms on the table. “Well firstly, I see the way you run things in this organization. You’ve proven to me that this industry is in safe hands in future, but there’s a problem.” “A problem, what could that be dad?” Samantha’s sat up straight, sensing something was wrong. “ The staffs…. They’ve been giving complaints about you and how you treat them.” Samantha laughed out loud like she had just seen a clown, “oh dad… I’m just trying to correct them… it’s actually not that serious.” While Samantha was still talking, he opened a drawer and pulled out a manila folder, sliding it across the desk. Samantha took it, noticing the Velvet fashion industry logo on the front cover of the folder. “I need you to take a good look at this.” “What’s this?” “Your future.” Samantha opened the folder to find organizational charts, past signed deals with celebrities and biggest clothing brands and a stack of legal document with a sticky note attached to each of them marked “sign here.” “You’ve been working hard in the industry for almost a year now and I think it’s time.” Samantha flipped through the papers. “ You want me to take over the company now?” “Not all at her once. But yes, eventually and very soon.” Martins facial expression softened, “I’m not getting shy younger Sammy and my health is failing me. I would…” Before Martins could finish talking, he started coughing. Samantha thought it was a random mild cough so she went to the water dispenser to fetch a cup of water. She knew it was now severe when Martins started coughing out blood. “Dad? What’s wrong?” She was confused on what to do. “Get the doctors! Call my doctors…” he managed to say Samantha quickly picked up his phone and dialed the doctor’s number. In less than a minute, the doctor picked the call. “Hello Mr Martins.” The doctor said in a soothing tone. “This is not Mr Martins, send the ambulance right away to the office, it’s an emergency!” The doctor ended the call and in no time, the ambulance arrived and mr Martins was rushed to the hospital. ******* At the hospital, Martins had already been admitted and the doctor asked that Samantha should follow him to his office. “Are you Mr Martins daughter?” “Yes I am.” “How come I’ve never seen you?” “That doesn’t matter, can you please go straight to the point ?” Sammy’s anger was starting to rise. “He has stage two cancer and also has hemorrhage.” The doctor said, handling a file to her. “Oh my goodness! Doctor please I beg of you, do anything and everything you can to save my dad, we’re ready to pay.” “It’s actually not about the money. Your dad’s company is the biggest in Northview. If he was told to pay hundred million dollars on the spot that wouldn’t even be a problem.” The doctor said. He continued, “Stage two cancer is mostly incurable in aged people and don’t forget the hemorrhage.” “So what do I have to do doctor?” At this point, Samantha was worried and scared to her bone marrows. “Well, you don’t actually have to do much, you just have to give us time. We will do our best and give him the right medications to ensure his health is sound and back on track.” Samantha came to visit her dad days after days. Bringing foods and gifts. Mr Martins was getting better was ready to be discharged from the hospital the next day. “Dad, how are you doing?” Samantha gave her dad a kiss on the forehead. “I’m better Sammy, at least I would be discharged tomorrow.” “Yes dad, I’m so happy, finally!” Samantha said with a cute smile. Martins dipped his hands into his pocket and stretched his hands towards Samantha. “Take this.” “What’s this dad?” He collected it from her dad and looked at it curiously. “This is your mum’s favorite necklace, she never removed it.” He continued, “it was the only thing I found of her after death while giving birth to you, the doctors in the hospital refused to show me her body so when I came to visit her, the necklace was lying lonely on the bed without its owner.” Martins coughed. “Sorry dad, take it easy. This is a lot to handle right now, but if I may ask, why’re you giving me now?” Samantha asked. “Old people don’t function the same way you young people function. We do things according to our inner mind.” “Why’re you giving me too?” “You have the potentials of your mother, she was fierce, respected by many, feared by some. She was strong and very hardworking. I miss her everyday I think of her.” His coughing continued, even harder. Samantha handed a bottle of water to him. “Sorry dad, please you should rest, I’ll come as early as I can tomorrow to come take you out of this place.” “Okay, Sammy,” In a few minutes, Martins slept and Samantha left the ward still looking at the new necklace her dad just gave her. The next day, as Samantha was dressing up to go to the hospital, she received a text that said, “ ms. Samantha, your presence is needed at the hospital immediately.” Samantha quickly rushed and zoomed off to the hospital. When she got to the hospital, she headed straight to the doctor’s hospital. On the look of the doctor’s face, she knew everything was not fine. “Good morning Samantha, I have bad news.” “Bad news? What’s wrong?” She asked impatiently. “You would have to sit please, don’t panic.” Doctor Patric tried to calm her down. “Don’t tell me to calm down! What’s wrong? And where’s my dad I want to take him home.” She said in a very aggressive tone. “Last night, everything was fine with Mr Martins and he was doing very fine, when we came this morning to discharge him, he was dead.” Doctor Patric tried putting his words in a pleasant way. Samantha’s head went round. She couldn’t believe what she just heard. Dead? How? He was doing very fine yesterday. He was supposed to come home today. How’s he dead? Samantha couldn’t help but burst into tears. “Where’s he?” She tried to speak. “He’s in the morgue. He was taken there before you came.” Doctor patrick said. “I want to see him now.” “Alright ms. Samantha.” Doctor Patrick took her to the hospital’s morgue and when they brought out her father. She couldn’t believe her eyes. She soaked her face in tears and didn’t say a word through out. The hospital staffs came to console her but all to no avail.
