1: Eighteenth Birthday
Katrina walked into the pack house, hating every moment of it. Technically she was not allowed to be in here if she isn't working. However, the Alpha called for her, and you do not deny the Alpha; even if you are human.
She kept her head down low and walked quickly, not wanting to attract any attention. Surely the alpha had sent out a mind link letting them know she would be entering, but she still felt the jolt of fear any time anyone glanced her way.
She made her way up to the 5th floor with out any incident. He called for her to come in when she knocked. Alpha Daniel was sitting when she walked in. She bowed to him and said, "Alpha, you called for me?"
He looked up, his brown eyes scrunching up in distaste at the sight of me. "Yes, hello Katrina. I know today if your Eighteenth Birthday," he didn't bother congratulating her. "You've been working around here for twelve years, and as you are already aware, we paid the wages of whoever kept you or the orphanage from your wages. Now that you're an adult, we will give you what is yours, and begin paying you from now on."
Katrina looked up in surprise before dropping her eyes back down to the floor. "Thank you Alpha, but I wasn't aware I would receive anything."
Alpha Daniel paused for a moment. "That used to be the case, but the Kingdom has passed new laws regarding our human servants. If you work, you have to be paid. Now don't get me wrong, you won't make as much as an omega of course, but enough to survive."
"Thank you Alpha Daniel, I really appreciate everything." She said, daring to look him in the eyes.
"There's more, now that you're an adult your no longer allowed to stay in the orphanage and since you're not permitted inside the pack house without orders to be here, we will be setting you up in a house." He turned away from her, pulling papers out of a cabinet behind him.
It was a map, a contract and an envelope. Turning the map to her he pointed at a little red dot on the very outskirts of town, hidden behind the woods. "This is where your house is, have you been down this way before?" He asked.
She nodded, disheartened. It wasn't a house, it was a shack with boarded up windows. She'd never been inside but she was sure it wasn't any better than the outside.
"Perfect, this is where you will live." He turned the contract to her. "So this is just your new service contract, it says your new pay will be $4/hr, there is no over time pay. Rent on your house is only $200 a month."
Katrina sighed internally, even now she wasn't worthy of a house with windows. Twelve years serving their every need, whatever beating they wanted to dish out. Never complained, never cried, just did her work, went to school and slept. It didn't matter though, even now they have to make sure I know I'm not wanted.
She thanked the Alpha once again, and he handed her the envelope. "Your payment for the past 12 years, from now on you will be paid weekly by the head of the omegas in the pack house. Your first month of rent is paid already, and we will deduct the charges automatically from your pay. You're dismissed." With a wave of his hand, she left as quickly as possible.
She went to the orphanage to pack up what little clothes she owned. The woman who ran it, feeling bad for her, offered her a back pack that had a blanket and sheets inside. Katrina smiled up at her, before packing her 4 outfits inside. She still had room to spare.
Once she was packed up she started the trek to her new home. It was about a 30 minute walk, but it wasn't bad. Kinda nice actually to be away from everyone for a while.
The shack looked exactly as she remembered, it leaned slightly to the left with the windows boarded up with plywood.
She sighed and walked up to the door and attempted to open it, but it was locked. 'at least it has that going for it' she thought to herself. Opening the envelope that held her pay she shook it until a key fell out.
The inside was slightly nicer than she expected. There was a fireplace stove and a mini fridge in the kitchen. A tiny table with two chairs pushing into a far corner, no other furniture in this room. Walking farther in she saw only two doors, one was a bedroom with an old mattress in it and the other was thankfully a full bathroom. She walked over and turned on the water, grateful when it started immediately.
The day was still early, and she had the day off. Not for her birthday, but it was just thankfully her one day off a week. Opening the envelope she counted out the money. More than she expected by a long shot, but not nearly enough to make it in the human world. She pulled out exactly $1,600.
Putting 1,300 away for her escape she decided to go into town and buy some essentials. Mainly cleaning supplies and soap to shower. She wanted to at least make this place livable until she could escape.
