CHAPTER FIVE A QUIET WAR She followed him out almost immediately and saw him leave in his car.She rushed outside to the gate and asked the men there if they knew where he was going but none gave her an answer. They either bowed in respect and ignored her or waved their head in disagreement. She hopelessly went back inside and call him with her phone but he wasn't taking her calls. To her,she was just worried for his safety. In the early hours of the day, Kingston eventually came, tired and angry. He kept shouting at the maids to hurry up with breakfast than usual.Aurora was scared to continue the previous discussion with him though she wasn't satisfied with his answers most especially the rules in the house. That morning, after eating, Kingston decided to introduce her properly to the servants. He told the head guard and within ten minutes, everyone was in the hall. “Good morning everyone”, Kingston said loudly as they were all gathered. “I brought you all here this morning”,he continued,”to introduce you to my newly wedded wife”,he said as he signaled Aurora to come forward with a subtle shift of his eyes. She caught on immediately and stepped out to introduce herself. “My name is Aurora Aragon, daughter of Drake….” “And that will be all for now”,he stepped in and stopped her,his voice overriding hers before the crowd. There was murmuring amongst everyone and Kingston dismissed them.Aurora couldn't understand why he didn't let her finish her introduction. She wanted to confront him about it but he was too busy for her. “I will be out of my office by noon,I hope lunch will be prepared then”he said making hand gestures towards the head cook, ma'am Emily. “Kingston”, Aurora called out in a soft tone but he acted out like he didn't hear her and walked away.Emily acted like nothing happened, smiled at her and asked her if she wanted to join her in the kitchen.Aurora politely refused but after some time of been lonely in her room, she went to join Emily in the kitchen. They talked and laughed like mother and daughter making Aurora miss her family. She couldn't call as she was so angry with them over her marriage decision. As she washed the vegetables, her thoughts wandered pulling her into a quiet daze.Emily noticed, walked to her and tapped her gently. “You have been staring in the empty space for a while now”,she said,”what's on your mind?”. Aurora smiled and waved her head negatively. “I just missed my family”,she said faking a faint smile. Emily patted her on the back, understanding that she didn't want to talk much of it. “You can send a message across, it's not that difficult”,she advised as she went back to what she was cooking.Soon lunch was ready and served before Kingston could know it.At the table,he was quite busy with food and phone, acting like he barely notice Aurora. “Kingston, you have been ignoring me like I did something wrong,I only want to know why you're doing these to me”, Aurora spoke up, scared for her life. “Do you think that you're the only thing I have got do”,he fired back in a demeaning manner. “Let's not do this here”, Aurora covered up maturely,”I will wait for you at dinner, you can go on with your work for now”. It worked and Kingston kept quiet. She didn't want the maids to know that they're fighting as even the walls of the house has ears. It was a cold night and the room felt colder as Aurora sat at the edge, fingers clasped tightly on each other and heart pounding as she awaits Kingston. He came back late after dinner and saw the lights on in Aurora's room.He entered like nothing happened and stood by the window, staring through the glass like the world was more tolerable than the woman he had vowed to live with. “You're late”,she finally whispered. He didn't look at her,”you don't ask questions in this house”. “This isn't about questions, it's about respect. We agreed to talk things over at dinner but you came back so late like you didn't even know a thing”, Aurora said standing. He turned slowly, his sharp landing on her,”respect…”,he said in a voice curled with mockery. “I thought we are through with this.Don’t mistake this arrangement for something romantic”. Her voice trembled but it was steady,”I’m your lawfully wedded wife Kingston not a prisoner”. He smiled coldly and asked,”haven't you heard of a prisoner in silk and designer dresses?” “Even prisoners have set times, I waited for dinner” “You shouldn't have,I didn't force you to.It was your choice if you chose to “ Aurora paused, she felt those words pierce deep into her heart. “I'm your wife” “Exactly “,he said coldly,”Not my secretary, not my concern. You’re here to look pretty and stay silent.I didn't marry you for conversations”. This left her breathe hanging, the last line caught deep like a slap,”And I didn't agree to be a ghost in my own home”. He chuckly darkly,”Home?, is that what you think this is?”. This time, the words stabbed deeper, she couldn't understand why her step-father gave her out the way he did,”was it really a business deal?”,her mind questioned. She reasoned all these and still had to give Kingston the benefit of doubt. “Then why did you marry me, Kingston?” “You should know why”,he said hesitantly,”Your step-father made me a deal and I took it. “Is it that you treat me cruely even in front of the servants”,she continued almost choking with tears. He tilted his head with a sinister smirk curling at the end of edge of his lips,”Yes, because I can”. And there was it,the raw naked truth which burned. She finally broke down, falling down in tears.Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. They wondered who it could be in the dead of the night, three soft knocks at first, subtle and cautious, then a thick silence followed.A white envelope was slipped in from underneath the door.Kingston rushed and swung the door open immediately but no one was there. He opened the card and in it was a white letter. No name,no address, just three words scribbled in elega nt bold words: "You're being watched".
